Sexually dimorphic behavioral effects of maternal separation in anorexic rats.

Exposure to negative events during the neonatal period is one of the leading factors contributing to the development of psychiatric disorders, including anorexia nervosa. In this study, we investigated the effects of maternal separation (MS) on the development of anorexia in rodents using the mild-stress form of the activity-based anorexia (ABA) model (2 hr of free access to a running wheel and a 1-hr feeding test) in both male and female rats. We assessed anxiety-like and locomotor behavior and hyperactivity with the open field and elevated plus maze tests. Our results showed that ABA rats of

Continuous central infusion of cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN 55,212-2 decreases maternal care in lactating rats: consequences for fear conditioning in adulthood males.

In lactating rats, maternal behavior consists of several integrated elements designed to promote care and nutrition of the offspring to ensure their survival. Given previous studies showing the role of the brain endocannabinoid system in maternal behavior, the objective of this work was to determine which changes in maternal care occur during continuous intracerebroventricular infusion of a cannabinoid receptor agonist (WIN 55,212-2). Maternal behavior was scored daily in 4 sessions of 72 min each (3 during the light phase and 1 during the dark phase). During drug infusion, the results indicat

Transgenerational impairment of hippocampal Akt-mTOR signaling and behavioral deficits in the offspring of mice that experience postpartum depression-like illness.

Postpartum depression (PPD) has adverse effects on offspring and increases their vulnerability to psychiatric disorders such as depression. Akt-mTOR signaling in the hippocampus is implicated in depression but its role in the behavioral deficits in PPD offspring remains unknown. By using a prepregnancy stress model of PPD in which Balb/c females that experience chronic stress before pregnancy show long-lasting PPD-like behaviors, we tested depression-like behaviors in PPD offspring (PPD-F1) at juvenile and adult ages as well as in the second generation (PPD-F2) produced by cross of male PPD-F1

Prevalence of Early Feeding Alterations Among Preterm Infants and Their Relationship to Early Neurobehavior.

IMPORTANCE: Feeding difficulties are common among preterm infants during neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization. Although most preterm infants achieve full oral feeding by term-equivalent age, whether feeding difficulties persist despite the infant taking full volume and whether these difficulties may relate to other neurobehavioral challenges remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of feeding problems among preterm infants and the relationships between infant feeding behaviors and neurobehavior at term-equivalent age. DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: Level 4 NICU w…

A vagal gut-brain axis for feeding-induced gastric secretion in mice.

Feeding begins with food-seeking and ends with nutrient absorption and waste elimination. Although meal-related sensory cues shape feeding behavior, how they engage neural circuits to control digestion remains unclear. We dissected vagal gut-brain-gut pathways mediating meal-induced gastric secretion. Stomach-innervating vagal afferents were necessary and sufficient for secretion. Among them, Glp1r+ and Sst+ neurons drove acid, pepsin, and gastrin secretion, whereas Oxtr+ and Vip+ neurons had little effect. Piezo2 was expressed in Glp1r+ mechanosensory afferents, and conditional deletion of Pi…

Natural and Drug Rewards Engage Distinct Pathways that Converge on Coordinated Hypothalamic and Reward Circuits.

Motivated behavior is influenced by neural networks that integrate physiological needs. Here, we describe coordinated regulation of hypothalamic feeding and midbrain reward circuits in awake behaving mice. We find that alcohol and other non-nutritive drugs inhibit activity in hypothalamic feeding neurons. Interestingly, nutrients and drugs utilize different pathways for the inhibition of hypothalamic neuron activity, as alcohol signals hypothalamic neurons in a vagal-independent manner, while fat and satiation signals require the vagus nerve. Concomitantly, nutrients, alcohol, and drugs also i

Pureed by gastrostomy tube diet improves gagging and retching in children with fundoplication.

BACKGROUND: Children with feeding disorders requiring Nissen fundoplication may develop gagging and retching following gastrostomy feedings. We developed a "pureed by gastrostomy tube" (PBGT) diet in an attempt to treat these symptoms and provide adequate nutrition and hydration. METHODS: Children post- fundoplication surgery with symptoms of gagging and retching with gastrostomy feedings were selected from our interdisciplinary feeding team. An individualized PBGT diet was designed to meet the child's nutrition goals. The child's weight gain was recorded at each follow-up visit. A telephone

Parenting Stress, Child Weight-Related Behaviors, and Child Weight Status.

Background: There has been limited examination of the association between parenting stress and child weight-related behaviors. We aimed to determine whether parenting stress is associated with child weight-related behaviors, including physical activity, screen time, diet, sedentary time, and eating in the absence of hunger (EAH). Secondarily, we assessed association between parenting stress and child weight status. Methods: Mother-child dyads (N = 291) enrolled in the Newborn Epigenetic STudy (NEST), a longitudinal cohort study, completed surveys to describe parenting stress, and child diet. C

Effect of a multidisciplinary treatment program on eating behavior in overweight and obese preschool children.

BACKGROUND: The effects of multidisciplinary treatment programs on eating behavior in overweight preschool-aged children are largely unknown. We evaluated a multidisciplinary intervention program on eating behavior in 3- to 5-year-old overweight children, comparing them with children given standard treatment. We also assessed the parental eating behavior changes and investigated associations between parents and children. METHODS: We randomized 75 children to a multidisciplinary intervention or to a standard care program. During a 16-week period, children and parents in the multidisciplinary g

Efficacy of 3 types of foraging enrichment for rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Primate facilities provide environmental enrichment to improve animal wellbeing, increase opportunities for expression of species-typical behaviors, and decrease the occurrence of stereotypic behaviors. The current study assessed the efficacy of 3 types of foraging enrichment: puzzle balls, supertubes, and shakers. We assigned 48 rhesus macaques to 3 experimental groups, each of which received (after a 3-wk baseline observation period) 1 of the 3 enrichment devices intermittently for 3 wk. Observations were collected during 10-min sessions by using 1-0 sampling with 15-s intervals (480 h total

Functional morphology of the feeding apparatus, feeding constraints, and suction performance in the nurse shark Ginglymostoma cirratum.

The nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, is an obligate suction feeder that preys on benthic invertebrates and fish. Its cranial morphology exhibits a suite of structural and functional modifications that facilitate this mode of prey capture. During suction-feeding, subambient pressure is generated by the ventral expansion of the hyoid apparatus and the floor of its buccopharyngeal cavity. As in suction-feeding bony fishes, the nurse shark exhibits expansive, compressive, and recovery kinematic phases that produce posterior-directed water flow through the buccopharyngeal cavity. However, there

Idiosyncratic route-based memories in desert ants, Melophorus bagoti: how do they interact with path-integration vectors?

Individually foraging desert ants of central Australia, Melophorus bagoti, exhibit amazingly precise mechanisms of visual landmark guidance when navigating through cluttered environments. If trained to shuttle back and forth between the nest and a feeder, they establish habitual outbound and inbound routes, which guide them idiosyncratically across the natural maze of extended arrays of grass tussocks covering their foraging areas. The route-based memories that usually differ between outbound and inbound runs are acquired already during the first runs to the nest and feeder. If the ants are di

Laboratory observations on mating and leklike aggregations in Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The mating behavior of the sand fly, Lutzomyia longipalpis, was studied under laboratory conditions. Male sand flies landed on the bodies of anesthetized mice, where they exhibited leklike displays such as wing fanning, parading, and aggression. Lek behavior was more frequent in older males, and dominance hierarchies were established. Male sand flies at leks copulated more frequently than male sand flies at other locations in the cage. Females mated by older males produced more eggs than did females mated by younger males; however, there was no difference in the number of larvae produced.

Substituting corn silage with reconstituted forage or nonforage fiber sources in the starter feed diets of Holstein calves: Effects on intake, meal pattern, sorting, and health.

We examined the effect of replacing corn silage (CS) with reconstituted alfalfa hay (RAH) or reconstituted beet pulp (RBP) in the starter diets on feeding behavior, sorting, and health criteria using 54 neonatal female Holstein calves that were assigned randomly to 3 groups receiving starter diets containing CS (10% on a dry matter basis), RAH, or RBP. The starter diets had the same nutrient composition and moisture level but differed in particle size distribution. Calves fed CS tended to have a lower intermeal interval compared with calves fed RAH before weaning; however, meal frequency and d…

Optogenetics studies of kisspeptin neurons.

Optical systems and genetic engineering technologies have made it possible to control neurons and unravel neuronal circuit behavior with high temporal and spatial resolution. The application of optogenetic strategies to understand the physiology of kisspeptin neuronal circuits has evolved in recent years among the neuroendocrine community. Kisspeptin neurons are fundamentally involved in controlling mammalian reproduction but also are implicated in numerous other physiological processes, including but not limited to feeding, energy expenditure, core body temperature and behavior. We conducted

Trajectories and predictors of maternal eating behaviors across the first year postpartum: The role of women's childhood trauma in emotional, external and restraint eating.

The first year postpartum is a sensitive time for maternal eating behaviors including emotional, external and restrained eating, which have all been associated with negative health outcomes. Furthermore, among women with a history of trauma, the stress of the postpartum period and early parenting may replicate feelings of helplessness and overwhelm experienced during childhood trauma, which may further contribute to these eating behaviors. Although evidence has shown how mothers eat during this time has long-term implications for infants' eating and health, limited research has characterized e
