Candida krusei is an emerging fungal pathogen found primarily in immunocompromised patients. Intrinsic resistance to fluconazole and decreasing susceptibility to other anti-fungal agents are problematic. When colonization occurs, dissemination may follow rapidly. Blastoschizomyces capitatus is an emerging pathogenic fungus that can cause deep invasive diseases in neutropenic patients. We developed a model of disseminated blastoschizomycosis in immunosuppressed mice to evaluate the effectiveness of amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole and voriconazole. High-dose fluconazole was the most effective drug at prolonging the survival of mice and at reducing fungal burden in the kidneys, spleen and liver.

We describe a patient with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who developed rhinocerebral zygomycosis during the aplastic phase induced by antineoplastic chemotherapy. The patient was treated with fluconazole intravenously (400 mg daily) for 30 days and underwent surgical debridement. As a result of this treatment a complete remission of the zygomycosis-associated symptoms was observed. The possibility of treating zygomycosis with fluconazole is discussed.

We report a 71/2-year-boy with disseminated systemic cryptococcosis. Although other species have been incriminated, this appears to be the first report of Cryptococcus humicolus. The child was HIV negative. He was treated with amphotericin B and fluconazole with intensive supportive care. The child responded after 6 weeks and is now on maintenance fluconazole therapy.
