A Prospective Evaluation of Patient-Reported Opioid Utilization After Nonoperative Treatment of Fractures and Dislocations.

BACKGROUND: Prescription of opioid analgesics is currently a common practice to relieve pain for musculoskeletal injuries in many regions of the world, especially in the United States and Canada. However, overprescription may underlie opioid misuse. Details on the utilization of prescribed opioids after nonoperative treatment of fractures and dislocations and whether consumption is related to injury location are unknown. METHODS: A total of 1,513 consecutive patients in China who underwent nonoperative treatment of a fracture and/or dislocation and who were prescribed opioids were studied ove

Late Manipulation under Anesthesia after Total Knee Arthroplasty: Improved Range of Motion and a Low Complication Rate.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of late manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) for stiffness performed from ≥12 weeks to more than a year after primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A total of 152 patients receiving MUA ≥12 weeks after primary TKA from 2014 to 2021 were reviewed. The primary outcome measured was change in range of motion (ROM). We tracked intraoperative complications and the need for repeat MUA or open procedure for continued stiffness after initial MUA. Three subgroups were analyzed: Group 1 included 58 knees between 12 weeks and 6 months after TKA, Group 2 i

Open Double Mallet Lesion of the Ring Finger with Concomitant Little Finger Fracture: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Mallet finger is a common injury of the extensor mechanism at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint; however, open double mallet lesions are rare and may present a complex reconstruction challenge. Case Presentation: A 15-year-old male high school student who sustained an open injury to the left ring and little fingers after a high-energy buggy accident. The ring finger showed an open double mallet lesion in which the extensor tendon remained attached to a tiny avulsion fragment, and a separate dorsal base fragment was also present. The adjacent little fi

Arthroscopic fixation techniques for tibial eminence fractures in pediatric patients: a review.

The introduction of new internal fixation devices and arthroscopic techniques has led to significant changes in the surgical treatment of tibial eminence fractures (TEFs) in children. In recent years, arthroscopic surgery has arisen as the gold standard for the treatment of TEFs. This popularity of arthroscopic techniques has reduced surgical complications and improved patient prognosis. In this paper, we investigate the current situation of the use of arthroscopic fixation techniques for pediatric TEFs. We searched the PubMed database using the terms "arthroscopic treatment and tibial eminenc

The effect of crutches, an orthosis TheraTogs, and no walking aids on the recovery of gait in a patient with delayed healing post hip fracture: A case report.

Accelerated rehabilitation following hip fracture and joint replacement, including early unrestricted weight-bearing and muscle strengthening, has gained importance in hastening functional recovery and hospital discharge. The influence of walking aids on these parameters is sparsely investigated. In this case report, we document the effect of walking with crutches; an orthotic garment and strapping system, TheraTogs; and no walking aids over 3-4-week periods on walking speed, trunk sway, and muscle activity measured with electromyography (EMG). The patient was a 49-year-old female showing dela

Pulpal response after acute dental injury in the permanent dentition: clinical implications-a review.

INTRODUCTION: Pulpal reactions after acute dental injury have been puzzling for many clinicians. The management of dental trauma and an understanding of clinical and treatment factors in outcomes arose from multivariate statistical analyses of archive material from Copenhagen. METHODS: The aim of this article was to review the works of this period with respect to pulpal reaction after acute mechanical trauma. These traumas include luxation, avulsion, root fracture, and crown fracture. A PubMed search identified other literature where multivariate analysis was used, and these results were comp

Particulated Autograft Cartilage Implantation for the Treatment of Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus: A Novel Technique.

UNLABELLED: Osteochondral lesions of the talus often occur following ankle sprains and fractures. Operative intervention is typically required because of the diminished intrinsic repair capability of talar articular cartilage. Several techniques have evolved that emphasize replacing the defect with cartilage that closely mimics the biological properties of hyaline articular cartilage. The goals of operative treatment are resolution of symptoms, physiologic healing, and restoration of function while eliminating the need for further intervention. This article describes a novel, single-step techn

Frequency and type of dental traumas in mandibular body and condyle fractures.

Dental injuries in association with 207 mandibular fractures were evaluated from patient files and radiographs. It was shown that 32% of the dentulous patients with condylar fractures had dental injuries, approximately 3.7 traumatised teeth per patient, most of which were dental hard tissue injuries and situated typically in the maxillary molar region. Dental injuries were diagnosed in 30% in association with mandibular corpus fractures, approximately 3.6 traumatised teeth per patient, and injuries were more often dental luxations in the anterior part of the mandible. It was found that 143 tee
