BACKGROUND: Nowadays, depression is a serious clinical problem, as the prevalence of its various forms increases and there are growing numbers of patients with severe forms of depression and treatment-refractory depression. Depressed patients have been observed to have decreased levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), which is the only endogenous antagonist of ionotropic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. The aim of this study was to identify subgroups of patients differing in the dynamics of changes in KYNA concentration during electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

OBJECTIVE Spinal CSF leakage causes spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). The aim of this study was to characterize CSF dynamics via lumbar infusion testing in patients with and without proven spinal CSF leakage in order to explore possible discriminators for the presence of an open CSF leak. METHODS This analysis included all patients with suspected SIH who were treated at the authors' institution between January 2012 and February 2015. The gold standard for "proven" CSF leakage is considered to be extrathecal contrast accumulation after intrathecal contrast injection. To characterize C

Due to the life cycle complexity of Schistosoma japonicum and the characteristics of schistosomias is immuno-epidemiology, it is very challenging to give a group of certain rules and thus describe the transmission dynamics of S. japonicum with modelling approaches. Most existing epidemiological models for schistosomias is based on differential equations only track average worm burden without taking into account the individual variations, thus bear limitations on individual infection status monitoring and interpretation. In this paper, an improved stochastic model based on cellular automaton (I

We described the transmission dynamics of Fasciola hepatica at its southern distribution range. Studies of prevalence and egg output in cattle and population dynamics and infection in snails were performed in a farm in the Andean Patagonian valleys, Argentina, between December 1998 and February 2002. Snail surveys were conducted from spring to autumn. Infection was diagnosed coprologically in the whole herd at the beginning and end of the study, and in a cohort of heifers at the beginning and end of 2001. A twice-a-year anthelmintic treatment was implemented in 1999. The relationship of the va

Frequency response characteristics of the ankle plantar flexors were studied in adults both with and without spinal cord injury (SCI) to determine how the muscle contractile properties change after SCI. and to see if there is a relation between the severity of spasticity and how the properties change. Ten controls and ten complete, chronic spinal cord injured subjects were tested, where the tibial nerve was stimulated electrically in a stochastic manner with the ankle fixed isometrically at various joint angles. A nonparametric linear frequency response function was derived, from which a secon

Previous studies have shown a complex, possibly bidirectional relationship between insomnia disorder (ID) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Neuroimaging evidence suggests the different functional connectivity (FC) of the ID and MDD patients. However, most existing studies rely on static FC analysis, and no direct comparison has been made between ID patients and those with comorbid ID and MDD (IMD). There is rare study to capture the impact of depressive symptoms on the dynamic brain properties of ID patients. To address this gap, the present study used a novel method to calculate the stabil

PURPOSE: To report the peri-implant fracture rates after locked plating of distal femur fractures and examine risk factors.
METHODS: Over a 7 year period, 89 AO/OTA 33A/C distal femur fractures were identified and reviewed. After excluding treatment with intramedullary nails, age under 50, those with the proximal femur protected, or those without 6 months of follow-up, 42 distal femur fractures in 41 patients, mean age 72.3 were studied. All were treated with lateral locked plating of distal femur fractures. The details of the constructs were recorded. Mean follow-up was 562 days (18.7 months

Smoking is companied with altered intrinsic activity of the brain measured by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation. Evidence has revealed that human brain activity is a highly dynamic and rapidly changing system. How exactly cigarette smoking affect temporal dynamic intrinsic brain activity is not fully understood nor is it clear how smoking severity influences spontaneous brain activity. Dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (dALFF) was used to examine the dynamic temporal variability in 93 participants (63 smokers, 30 nonsmokers). We further divided smokers into light and heavy sm

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is known to be characterized by altered brain functional connectivity (FC) patterns. However, whether and how the features of dynamic FC would change in patients with MDD are unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize dynamic FC in MDD using a large multi-site sample and a novel dynamic network-based approach.
METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired from a total of 460 MDD patients and 473 healthy controls, as a part of the REST-meta-MDD consortium. Resting-state dynamic functional brain networks

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective radiographic analysis of lumbar spine range of motion (ROM) after monosegmental fusion and posterior dynamic stabilization at the level L4-L5.
OBJECTIVE: Comparison of segmental ROM at the index level and the cranial and caudal adjacent levels and of global lumbar spine ROM after monosegmental fusion and posterior dynamic stabilization.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The postulated advantage of nonfusion technology compared with fusion is based on the assumption that preservation of motion at the treated segment reduces the incidence of adjacent segment effects. Ther

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity (PCFD), a multifactorial disorder, involves the synergistic failure of dynamic restraints, primarily the posterior tibial tendon (PTT), and static restraints, chiefly the calcaneonavicular ligament (SL). The necessity of routinely reconstructing the SL complex in the early, flexible stages of the disease is a significant clinical debate. To clarify this, this study aimed to assess whether measurable macro-structural changes, specifically alterations in the ultrasonographic thickness of the supramedial fasciculus of the calcaneonav

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated the correlation between shoulder kinematics and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing rotator cuff repair using dynamic analysis. This study assessed shoulder kinematics before and after surgical repair in patients with rotator cuff tears (RCTs) and determined the relationship among shoulder kinematics and between shoulder kinematics and clinical outcomes.
METHODS: Ten patients with large-to-massive RCTs and 10 control participants were included. In vivo shoulder kinematics during scapular plane abduction were measured preoperatively and 1 year pos

Antibody and cytokine kinetics describe the dynamic response to immune events such as infection and vaccination. These dynamics are not fully understood, and mathematical characterization may help explain variability across demographic groups and pulmonary symptoms post-acute infection. We fit time-dependent probability models to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) data to obtain distributions of longitudinal antibody response and cytokine values. To assess differences between groups, an overlap metric is applied to the modeled response curves. Our antibody models sugg

In cases where multiple footprints are found at a crime scene, it is unusual that all are static, and some are likely dynamic. Depending on how the footprint was made, we distinguish between dynamic and static footprints. A distinguishing feature that has only recently been associated with dynamic footprints is the fact that dynamic footprints differ from static footprints by the presence of additional markings around the back of the heel and the tops of the toe prints, the so-called ghosting phenomenon. The present study aims to analyse the ghosting phenomenon on dynamic footprints - its occu

BACKGROUND: At present, the conventional methods for diagnosing cerebral edema in clinical practice are computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which can evaluate the location and degree of peripheral cerebral edema, but cannot realize quantification. When patients have symptoms of diffuse cerebral edema or high cranial pressure, CT or MRI often suggests that cerebral edema is lagging and cannot be dynamically monitored in real time. Intracranial pressure monitoring is the gold standard, but it is an invasive operation with high cost and complications. For clinical purpo

Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membranes (MAMs) are not only critical for the communication between two organelles but also crucial for cellular processes such as energy metabolism, calcium signaling, and mitochondrial dynamics. The effects of curcumin on jejunal mitochondria, ER, and MAMs in piglets under diquat-induced oxidative stress were assessed. Twenty-four piglets (35 days old, weaned at 21 days, 9.54 ± 0.28 kg, six piglets per group) were used in the study: (1) control group; (2) control + curcumin group; (3) diquat group; and (4) diquat + curcumin group. Group A streptococcus has emerged as a major cause of aggressive life-threatening deep-seated infections. In addition, toxic shock syndrome caused by Group A streptococcus was recognized in 1983. Group A streptococcus produces several potent exotoxins which explain the pathophysiology of these invasive infections. Other virulence factors such as M protein, which can impede phagocytosis, are associated with some Group A streptococcus. M protein and streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins may act as super antigens. Host factors may influence the severity of infection. Blood purification techniques suc
