Finding the sources of septicemia at a neonatal intensive care unit: newborns and infants can be contaminated while being fed.

This study was conducted to determine whether the hospital devices and materials used for the examination and treatment of patients play a r … s must be regularly checked for pathogen microorganisms. Instead of using heated water to sterilize infant formula, dry air sterilization should be used. Liquid media like oxygen reservoir solution and antiseptic solutions must be checked for contamination and should be changed periodically.

Health benefits of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 in infants and children: a mini-review.

The colonization of the infant gut microbiome during the critical window of 0-3 years is influenced by a multitude of prenatal, environmental and host factors, and may be crucial for life-long health. The infant gut microbiome is highly dynamic, with bifidobacteria-dominance generally established during birth and lactation, followed by transition to a more stable and adult-like composition reached around 3 years of age. Bifidobacteria-dominance in infancy is considered protective as they not only display both anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects but also foster the establishment of o

"In the United States, we say, 'No breastfeeding,' but that is no longer realistic": provider perspectives towards infant feeding among women living with HIV in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, the United States (U.S.) recommends that infants born to women living with HIV (WLHIV) be fed formula, whereas many low-resource settings follow the World Health Organization's recommendation to exclusively breastfeed with ongoing antiretroviral therapy. Evidence on infant feeding among WLHIV in high-resource countries suggest that these contrasting recommendations create challenges for providers and patients. Our study used multiple methods to understand providers' infant feeding perspectives on caring for their pregnant and post-partum WLHIV in the U.S. METHODS: We

Healthcare professionals and commercial milk formula recommendations in the urban Mexican context.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding (BF) is considered an essential component of optimal care for child health and development. In the past two decades, global data have shown improvements in some, but not all, BF indicators. Despite these positive changes sales and per capita intake of commercial milk formula (CMF) have increased globally. The CMF industry invests millions of dollars in marketing, which targets families and healthcare professionals (HCP). In Mexico, more than half of the mothers (53%) who feed their infants with CMF chose their Brand on the recommendation of HCP. Understanding the re

Improved mineral balance in very low birth weight infants fed fortified human milk.

Enhanced calcium and phosphorus retention was achieved in 16 very low birth weight infants (birth weight 1117 +/- 42 g, gestation 29 +/- 0.2 weeks) fed a preparation of fortified human milk augmented with calcium lactate and monobasic and dibasic phosphate salts. Measurements of growth and macronutrient utilization were similar to those obtained in a previous study of infants fed a preparation of fortified human milk that contained lower levels of calcium and phosphorus. However, unlike the relative hypophosphatemia, hypophosphaturia, and hypercalciuria noted in the infants in our earlier stud

The effect of gluten-free diet supplemented with Humana-MCT on the level of lipid fractions in blood serum of infants with coeliac disease.

The concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA), triglycerides (TG), free cholesterol (FC) and estrified cholesterol (EC) as well as the fatty acid composition of TG and EC fractions have been determined in blood serum of 16 infants with coeliac disease. The determinations were carried out three times: after admission and diagnosis but before the initiation of any treatment, after two and after four weeks of a glutene-free diet supplemented with Humana-MCT formula. Before treatment all the infants had weight deficite between 20% and 40%. After two weeks of diet treatment, the concentrations of bl

Effect of milk feeding on intestinal bilirubin absorption in the rat.

The hypothesis that the etiologic mechanism of the late-onset, prolonged, unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia of the breast-fed infant, known as the breast milk jaundice syndrome, results from exaggeration of intestinal bilirubin absorption has been investigated in an adult rat model, which permits quantitative measurement of the enterohepatic circulation of bilirubin. After instillation of unconjugated bilirubin in buffer into the duodenum, 25% of the dose was absorbed and appeared in bile. Administration of bilirubin in human milk or cow milk formula resulted in a marked reduction in absorption

Effect of an Exclusive Human Milk Diet on the Gut Microbiome in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The effect of using an exclusive human milk diet compared with one that uses bovine products in preterm infants is uncertain, but some studies demonstrate lower rates of key neonatal morbidities. A potential mediating pathway is the gut microbiome. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of an exclusive human milk diet on gut bacterial richness, diversity, and proportions of specific taxa in preterm infants from enrollment to 34 weeks' postmenstrual age. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this randomized clinical trial conducted at 4 neonatal intensive care units in the United King

Exclusive breastfeeding among women taking HAART for PMTCT of HIV-1 in the Kisumu Breastfeeding Study.

BACKGROUND: One of the most effective ways to promote the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV-1 in resource-limited settings is to encourage HIV-positive mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) for the first 6 months post-partum while they receive antiretroviral therapy (ARV). Although EBF reduces mortality in this context, its practice has been low. We studied the rate of adherence to EBF and assessed associated maternal and infant characteristics using data from a phase II PMTCT clinical trial conducted in Western Kenya which included a counseling intervention

Lack of long-term effect of the method of infant feeding on growth.

Although we have found that, at 7 years of age, children who were exclusively breast-fed in the first 3 months of life are significantly taller and slightly heavier than those exclusively formula-fed, correction for a variety of other familial factors can explain most of the differences. The breast-fed were longer at birth, had taller mothers, and came from families of higher socioeconomic status, although the last appears to act via maternal stature. There was no difference between the groups at age 7 in skeletal maturity, nor in fatness as measured by combined triceps plus subscapular fatfol

Increased Impact of Air Pollution on Lung Function in Preterm versus Term Infants: The BILD Study.

Rationale: Infants born prematurely have impaired capacity to deal with oxidative stress shortly after birth. Objectives: We hypothesize that the relative impact of exposure to air pollution on lung function is higher in preterm than in term infants. Methods: In the prospective BILD (Basel-Bern Infant Lung Development) birth cohort of 254 preterm and 517 term infants, we investigated associations of particulate matter ⩽10 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide with lung function at 44 weeks' postconceptional age and exhaled markers of inflammation and oxidative stress response

Transient Cortical Blindness in a Toddler With Heterozygous Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency.

Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency is an incredibly rare disease in the subgroup of urea cycle disorders. Although typically seen in the neonate shortly after initiating high protein feeds (human breastmilk or infant formula), patients with partial/heterozygous deficiencies can often be diagnosed later in life with unique sequelae. One such manifestation is sudden, transient vision loss shortly after an initial episode of hyperammonemia in a patient without a known diagnosis of OTC deficiency. Only two such occurrences are documented in academic literature and both share many similar …

Galactosemia in Thai patient at Phramongkutklao Hospital: a case report.

Galactosemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of galactose metabolism, which occurs as a consequence of a deficiency of one of these three enzymes: galactokinase, galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase, and uridine diphosphate galactose-4-epimerase, leading to elevated level of galactose and its metabolites in blood. The presented case was a 2-month-old, Thai female infant with persistent cholestatic jaundice, bilateral posterior subcapsular cataracts, and hepatomegaly. Laboratory investigations showed slightly elevated serum aminotransferase, and increased urinary excretion of galactos
