Relationship of exposure to organ donation information to attitudes, beliefs, and donation decisions of next of kin.

CONTEXT: Public education campaigns about organ donation are common, but their association to actual attitudes, beliefs, and decisions about organ donation among family members of donation-eligible individuals is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine the sources of organ donation information identified by donor and nondonor families who participated in a large-scale study to examine factors that influence organ donation decisions. DESIGN: Semistructured telephone survey conducted after a passive recruitment strategy. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Participants were 285 next of kin of donor-eligible ind

Health Information Seeking Among Rural African Americans, Caucasians, and Hispanics: It Is Built, Did They Come?

This cross-sectional study examines health information-seeking behaviors and access to and use of technology among rural African Americans, Caucasians, and Hispanics. There was a low level of health information seeking across the sample. Few used smartphones or tablets and did not endorse receiving health information from their health care provider by e-mail. Printed materials remained a source of health information as did friends and family. Information should be shared using multiple platforms including more passive methods such as television and radio. More research is needed to ensure the

Assessing the readability of AI-generated medication counseling for common Medicaid drug classes: metformin, lisinopril, and atorvastatin.

BACKGROUND: Metformin, lisinopril, and atorvastatin rank among the most commonly prescribed medications for Medicaid patients; however, patients often have inadequate knowledge regarding their safe usage. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming a prevalent source of medication information, but their readability for low-literacy populations compared to authoritative drug information sources lacks empirical assessment. METHODS: Sixteen standardized medication counseling inquiries (5 for metformin, 5 for lisinopril, and 6 for atorvastatin) were presented to three AI platforms …

The effects of emotional content on source monitoring in fibromyalgia patients.

Source confusion refers to a person's failure to distinguish whether an event has been actually seen or simply imagined. Nevertheless, prior research has demonstrated a reduction of source confusion for negative arousing information. According to the emotional-congruence effect, this emotional benefit is likely observed in patients suffering from chronic pain. This hypothesis was tested on 15 patients suffering of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and 15 healthy women. In a source-monitoring task, participants had to decide whether positive, negative, and neutral words were imagined or seen with a p

Differences in e-cigarette use, dependence, and knowledge between health and social sciences university students in Costa Rica.

INTRODUCTION: The use of vapes or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has increased worldwide. However, studies evaluating their use among university students in Latin American countries remain scarce. Consequently, the level of knowledge that students have about these devices is not well understood. Moreover, emerging evidence suggests that e-cigarette use may be associated with periodontal diseases. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence and dependence of e-cigarette use, compare knowledge regarding these devices, and examine the association between e-cigarette use and self-perceived perio

Interpreting higher-order dependence in multimorbidity using cohort data: A partial information decomposition approach.

In the context of multimorbidity, clinical features seldom act in isolation: symptoms, signs and behaviours form interdependent systems in which joint effects on function can be demonstrated only when features are considered together. We introduce an open, reusable workflow that detects and interprets these "together-only" interactions using bivariate Partial Information Decomposition (PID; two sources to one target), linking synergy-based dependence to the broader network of clinical variables rather than to a single target. The workflow estimates synergy with small-sample bias correction and

How patients navigate specialist referral pathways in hand surgery: a cross-sectional survey study.

BACKGROUND: Patients navigating specialist care are often presented with multiple options and information sources. In fragmented healthcare systems, understanding how individuals select specialists is important for optimizing referral pathways and access to care. This study examined factors influencing patient selection of hand surgeons, including the relative importance of primary care recommendations, surgeon characteristics, online information (such as physician rating websites and internet-based search resources), opinions of family and friends, as well as demographic differences in these …

Pro- and Antifluoride Use Messages on YouTube in Japan: Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions globally. In Japan, fluoride application-mainly via toothpaste, mouth rinses, and professional treatments-is a key preventive measure, as community water fluoridation is not implemented. Despite its proven effectiveness, fluoride use faces opposition from certain groups citing potential health risks. Social media platforms, especially YouTube, have become major sources of health information, but also facilitate the spread of misinformation, which may influence public perceptions and behaviors toward fluoride use. Exploratory analysis of poultry workers' knowledge and practices Regarding highly pathogenic avian influenza in Guinea.

BACKGROUND: In 2022-2023, Guinea experienced a major avian influenza epizootic, leading to significant economic losses and increasing the risk of transmission to humans. Raising awareness and promoting protective behaviour among the general population, particularly high-risk groups, could help strengthen prevention and control measures for this zoonosis. This study aimed to assess knowledge and practices related to avian influenza among poultry workers in Guinea. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between November and December 2023 on poultry farms in Coyah and Forecariah, Guinea

"I Get the Flavors and It Makes Me Love Vaping More": How and Why Youth Users Modify Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems.

INTRODUCTION: Youth in the United States are using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) at a high rate. Modifications to ENDS by youth can introduce additional health hazards which have not been previously considered. To better understand these risks, we need more information on what these modifications are, the motivations behind them, and the sources of information on modifications. AIMS AND METHODS: Utilizing a trained moderator, in 2020-2021, we conducted one-on-one interviews with 19 youth ENDS users aged 16-17 living in the United States and analyzed their responses using a quali

Assessing Health Data Security Risks in Global Health Partnerships: Development of a Conceptual Framework.

BACKGROUND: Health care databases contain a wealth of information that can be used to develop programs and mature health care systems. There is concern that the sensitive nature of health data (eg, ethnicity, reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, and lifestyle information) can have significant impact on individuals if misused, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized populations. As academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and international agencies begin to collaborate with low- and middle-income countries to develop and deploy health information technology

The implications of different approaches to evaluating intervention: evidence from the study of language delay/disorder.

There is a pressure to both identify and expand the evidence base with regard to the treatment of speech and language disorders in children, as there is in other areas of speech and language therapy. This paper addresses two sources of evidence, a systematic review and meta-analysis of early language interventions and the monitoring of an early language target for socially disadvantaged children in Sure Start programmes in England. There is a growing number of efficacy studies in the field of speech and language disorders in children. For example, in a recent review for the Cochrane Collaborat

How important is functional status as a predictor of service use by older people?

In studies of older people, it is often assumed that biophysical, or functional, status is the primary determinant of formal service use. This article reports baseline data from a longitudinal study of a community-based, linked random sample of frail elders (n = 635) and their informal caregivers (n = 429) to investigate the relative contribution of social circumstances to the use of community-based formal services. Elder respondents were categorized into three groups defined by their primary source of care: (a) informal only, (b) mixed help with predominantly informal care, (c) mixed help wit

Assessment of Quality and Reliability of YouTube Videos on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy including Hypnosis.

Hypnosis combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-hypnosis) is a type of psychological treatment that focuses on how people think and behave in various mental and medical illnesses. It treats behavioral and emotional issues by tapping into the subconscious mind. Patients who are hypnotized are more open to new ideas and less prone to decline hard ones. The result is that it is simpler to adopt the healthy cognitive patterns and habits that CBT tries to promote. YouTube is a great resource for health-related education that has the power to greatly impact the choices and actions of medica
