OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess intrathecal mepivacaine for euthanasia in anesthetized horses and compare it to a traditional euthanasia method using a single intravenous injection of pentobarbital in sedated horses.
ANIMALS: Client-owned horses and horses requiring euthanasia due to involvement in concurrent research projects were used. Horses were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: intrathecal mepivacaine after anesthesia or intravenous pentobarbital after sedation. All horses had normal vital parameters and no signs of infectious disease at the time of euthanasia.

BACKGROUND: The impetus to develop percutaneous calcitriol injection therapy (PCIT) was the lack of therapeutic tools to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism (2HPT) resistant to medical therapy.
METHODS: Nine dialysis patients resistant to intravenous calcitriol or calcitriol analogues underwent daily PCIT 5-10 times consecutively. The PCIT involved the injection of a volume of calcitriol equal to that of the enlarged parathyroid glands (PTGs) under ultrasonographic guidance. 5 adult dwarf goats were injected intravenously with diazepam, chlorpromazine or isotonic saline. Both diazepam at 0.04 mg/kg and chlorpromazine at 0.5 mg/kg significantly stimulated food intake above the control 0.9% NaCl levels. The present study examined the relationship between depressive symptoms and frequency of drug use in 91 low income nontreatment intravenous drug users in Baltimore, Maryland. A 25-week fetus with severe hydrops fetalis secondary to supraventricular tachycardia was treated with fetal intramuscular injections of digoxin in conjunction with maternal intravenous digoxin, followed by oral digoxin and subsequently by oral procainamide therapy. Ten patients with purulent meningitis received 3 intravenous injections of 4 g piperacillin at intervals of 8 hours, in addition to the usual antimicrobial treatment.
