A boy with abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma developed rectal bleeding, abdominal distension, pain, and fever three weeks after diagnosis. Imaging studies revealed a necrotic tumor mass allowing a fistulous pathway from the ileum to the proximal colon. A laparotomy was performed, with resection of the large necrotic tumor. The child recovered, and has had no further evidence of Burkitt's disease. The radiological evaluation performed in this case ensured proper medical management and surgical intervention during a life-threatening event. The possibility of bowel perforation as a complication of the

Massive hemorrhage from the colon is always a problem. When that bleeding occurs in a defunctionalized colonic mucous fistula, the surgeon can approach the bleeding site from both ends simultaneously. Two methods of controlling hemorrhage from a mucous fistula with the assistance of Foley catheter tamponade are presented.

Forty-one patients were operated upon for acute intestinal obstruction secondary to the presence of phytobezoars, 34 of these patients (83%) having a history of previous gastric surgery for ulcer. The etiologic factor in 44% of cases was oranges and in 56% persimmons (Kakis). Treatment was by enterotomy in 27 patients (65,85%) and by "milking" in 14 (34,15%). Postoperative mortality was 2,44% (1 case). Recurrence was noted in three cases (7,3%) including one with an ileocutaneous fistula, treatment being by enterotomy in 2 cases and "milking" in the third patient. First intention intestinal re

UNLABELLED: Newborns (NB) represent a surgical challenge for the surgeon due to their physiological characteristics and reduced surgical spaces. During the last decade, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been adopted as a treatment for this group of patients.
OBJECTIVE: To report our experiences of MIS on NB weighing less than 2,500 grams.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted analyzing the records of newborns weighing less than 2,500 g and subjected to MIS between April, 2009 and 2012. No patients were excluded.
RESULTS: 25 newborns participated on this stu

The authors report their experience of biliary ileus, namely 8 cases out of 533 intestinal occlusions of the small bowel operated from 1982-1994. The patients included 5 women and 3 men with a F/M ratio = 1.7. Mean age was 79 years. Past medical history involving the biliary tract was only recorded in 3 cases. At the time of hospitalization occlusive symptoms had been present for between 2 and 7 days: pain in 7 patients, abdomen closed to gas and feces in 6, and vomiting in 7. Direct abdominal X-ray was only performed in 3 cases. A diagnosis of intestinal occlusion was made in 6 cases and bili

A 42-year-old woman with a history of cervical cancer previously treated with radical hysterectomy, lymphadenectomy, and bilateral salpingectomy presented with severe right lower extremity pain, initially attributed to routine chemotherapy-related side effects. Despite symptomatic management, her pain intensified, accompanied by abdominal distention, constipation, and reduced ambulation. Subsequent clinical evaluation revealed a significant abscess extending from the pelvis into the gluteal musculature and thigh. Imaging confirmed that the abscess communicated with a loop of the small bowel, e

BACKGROUND: The literature reports a wide variety of reconstructive methods for pharyngolaryngoesophageal (PLO) defects, the most widely used being anterolateral thigh (ALT), radial forearm (RFF), and jejunal free flaps (JFF). However, there is a lack of uniform agreement among head and neck surgeons as to which technique offers the best results. With an increasing number of salvage PLO extirpations, determining the role of radiotherapy in influencing postoperative complication rates is becoming ever more important. Hence, this study aims to provide an up-to-date comparison of surgical and fun

The paper treats the problems of metabolism derangement in surgical patients. Special emphasis is laid on the correction of metabolic abnormalities in the pre- and postoperative periods and on the use of parenteral feeding in surgical complications: incompetence of anastomosis sutures, peritonitis, intestinal fistulas, and so forth. The authors define the role of the drugs of directed action in such a severe pathology as hepatorenal insufficiency.

The complex clinico-roentgenological examination of 232 patients with cholelithic disease enabled the authors to reveal different complications (duodenitis, pancreatitis, biliodigestive fistulas, stones in the ampullar portion of the common duct cholelithic small intestine ileus) in 52 (22,7%) of them. The relaxation duodenography was found to be a sufficiently informative method for diagnosing complications of the cholelithic disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fistulizing Crohn's disease represents a severe and disabling complication characterized by transmural inflammation and aberrant tissue remodeling. Although fissures are considered precursors of fistulas, the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving this transition remain poorly defined. We aimed to characterize the spatial immune-stromal interactions underlying fissure formation and progression toward fistula.
METHODS: Spatial transcriptomics was performed on intestinal surgical specimens from Crohn's disease patients with inflamed tissue, fissures of increasing depth, an

INTRODUCTION: Fistula formation from intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas is uncommon; however, IPMN penetrating various organs has been increasingly reported. To date, there is a lack of literature reviewing recent reports and the clinicopathologic details of IPMN with fistula formation are still poorly understood.
METHODS: This study describes the case of a 60-year-old woman presenting with postprandial epigastric pain and diagnosed with main-duct (MD) IPMN penetrating to the duodenum, and presents comprehensive literature review of IPMN with fistulae. A literature

BACKGROUND: Perianal fistulas are frequent complications of Crohn's disease. Intravenous infliximab can control perianal disease and promote perianal fistula closure. Perifistular infliximab injections have been proposed for patients who are intolerant or unresponsive to intravenous therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term efficacy of surgical treatment combined with local infliximab therapy.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was designed. Twelve patients with Crohn's disease and high/complex transphincteric and intrasphincteric perianal fistulas refractory to other treatm

BACKGROUND/AIM: Differentiating intestinal Behçet’s disease (BD) from Crohn’s disease (CD) is highly challenging, as they often mimic each other in terms of clinical manifestations. Endoscopy is an important modality for distinguishing bowel lesions. The study was designed to identify clinical manifestations that are easily confused and to evaluate the efficacy of endoscopy for distinguishing intestinal BD from CD by several overlapping signs.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data from 111 patients with intestinal BD and 81 patients with CD were retrospectively analyzed. Logistic regression was app

Heterotopic mesenteric ossification (HMO) is a rare disease inducing pathological bone tissue formation in the abdominal cavity after multiple operational traumas. The authors present an unusual case of mesenteric ossification formation in a 30 year-old man after surgery due to status ileosus on the basis of intestinal incarceration. After being released into home treatment the patient had to be hospitalized again and reoperated. During the next six weeks, the patient was reoperated three more times due to intestinal status ileosus and significant leaking of the entero-cutaneous fistula. Despi

A 61-year-old woman, who had undergone total gastrectomy and distal splenopancreatectomy with Roux-en Y reconstruction for a gastric cancer 16 years earlier, was found primary small intestinal cancer located in intestinal loop of Roux- en Y in gastrointestinal endoscopy for abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed liver metastases which were 8 cm in diameter at lateral segment and 1 cm in diameter at segment 8 of the liver. In the operation, the small intestinal cancer was located in the ρ-anastomosis in the loop of Roux-en Y with the other jejunum fistula. We performed lateral segment hepat

BACKGROUND: Reversal of Hartmann's procedure is a complex surgery with potential complications. This case report describes a rare and severe complication following an attempted reversal.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old male who had undergone a Hartmann's procedure for non-metastatic sigmoid colon cancer presented with bowel obstruction 10 days after attempted reversal surgery at another hospital. Imaging studies suggested an entero-colic fistula. Emergency laparotomy revealed dense adhesions and multiple bowel injuries. The procedure was terminated, and controlled fistulae were created.
