Sarcoidosis is a multisystem chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology, characterized by non-caseating granulomas. Sarcoidosis has the potential to involve every tissue in the body, which mainly affect the lymphatic system and lungs; gastrointestinal system, and particularly the colon, is an extremely rare location. We report the case of a 64-year-old male with history of pulmonary and cutaneous sarcoidosis diagnosed with neoplasm in the hepatic flexure of the colon and a polyp with high-grade dysplasia in the transverse colon by colonoscopy after a positive fecal occult blood test. The

A 67-year-old male patient was referred to our department for fecal occult blood in March 2019. In April, lower intestinal endoscopic examination revealed a 25-mm pedunculated polyp in the sigmoid colon. Endoscopic mucosal resection was then performed. The pathological diagnosis was tub1-tub2 with an invasion depth of pT1b 3,000 μm, and ly0 and v1 vascular invasion. The tumor marker levels were normal, with CEA of 1.1 ng/mL and CA19-9 of 13.9 U/mL. An additional laparoscopic low anterior resection and D2 dissection were performed in June. After the endoscopic mucosal resection, pathologic exam

The present study aimed to determine the diagnostic yield of OMOM capsule endoscopy for small bowel diseases in adults. A total of 89 patients, including 45 cases of obscure abdominal pain, 22 of chronic diarrhea, 18 of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding and 4 of obscure anemia were enrolled in the present study. The transit time of the endoscopy capsule in the digestive tract was recorded and the testing results were analyzed. All detections were completed except for four capsule retentions and the completion rate was 95.51%. The average transit time of the endoscopy capsule in the esophagus,

Although optical colonoscopy is still the gold standard for diseases of the colon, radiologic examination of the colon is now being performed by CT scan. Evaluation of the colon is enhanced by distension, which "de-folds" the intestinal wall, thus facilitating its examination for abnormalities of the mucosa, the wall as a whole, and the diameter of the bowel lumen. Water or gas (CO(2)) may be used for the distension, depending on the suspected lesions. The water enema method of colonography combines filling the bowel lumen with water and intravenous injection of a contrast medium. It is indica

Analysis of Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (CE) images has become a very active area of research since this novel technology enabled access to previously inaccessible areas of the gastrointestinal tract, especially the small intestine. Art has investigated automatic segmentation of organ boundaries, detection of lesions and bleeding as well as other supervised and unsupervised analysis. However, all of this art has focused on treating the images as individual and independent observations that contribute towards a unique and separate decision. Given the overlap between the images, this is clearly n

The characteristics of gastric polyps in patients with Peutz-Jeghers (PJ) syndrome (PJS) have not been fully investigated. The objective of this study was to reveal the endoscopic and pathologic findings of gastric polyps in patients with PJS. We reviewed 11 patients with PJS treated at 6 institutions, and summarized the endo-scopic and pathologic features of their gastric polyps. The polyps were mainly classified into 2 types: (i) soli-tary or sporadic polyps > 5 mm, reddish in color with a sessile or semi-pedunculated morphology (n = 9); and (ii) multiple sessile polyps ≤ 5 mm with the same

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic resections are increasingly being used for superficial gastrointestinal lesions. However, application of these techniques in the duodenum remains challenging, due to the technical difficulties and high complication rates. This study projects a western tertiary center's experience in the endoscopic treatment and diagnostic workup of 19 cases of non-ampullary duodenal lesions.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Specimens (12 endoscopic mucosal resections, 6 endoscopic submucosal dissections, and one endoscopic full-thickness resection) were processed following a strict protocol (photogr

Endoscopy is an inherent and an invaluable tool in every gastroenterologist's armamentarium. The prerequisite for quality and safety remains foremost. Adverse events should be minimized and proactive steps should taken before, during and after the endoscopic procedure. Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy are part of basic endoscopy and their major complications will be reviewed here, together with those of enteroscopy. The most common of all endoscopy related complications are cardiopulmonary and thus they will be addressed in detail first. Colonoscopy's major complications are bleeding and perfor

OBJECTIVES: Many studies around the world addressed the post-colonoscopy complications, but their pooled prevalence and time trends are unknown. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies to examine the pooled prevalence of post-colonoscopy complications ("perforation", "bleeding", and "mortality"), stratified by colonoscopy indication. Temporal variability in the complication rate was assessed.
METHODS: We queried Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane library for population-based studies examining post-colonoscopy complications (within 30 days), performed from

We showed a newly developed method, retrograde double-balloon enteroscopy, to be useful for preoperative diagnosis in a case of inflammatory fibroid polyp accompanied by small-bowel intussusception. A 64-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with small-bowel intussusception. Results of radiographic and ultrasonographic examination were suggestive of a small-bowel mass. Retrograde double-balloon enteroscopy was performed in an attempt to make a preoperative diagnosis. Endoscopic observation, in combination with histological findings derived from endoscopic biopsy, was suggestive of an inf

Multiple lymphomatous polyposis (MLP) is an uncommon type of primary non-Hodgkin gastrointestinal (GI) B-cell lymphoma characterized by the presence of multiple polyps along the GI tract. Malignant cells of MLP have mantle cell characteristics and thus are considered to be the counterpart of the mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in the GI tract. Since 1961, no more than 70 well-documented cases have been published. We report the case of 53-year-old man diagnosed as having MLP. The patient presented with diffuse abdominal pain, chronic lower GI bleeding, peripheral lymphadenopathy, and weight loss. Th

Puetz-Jegher's syndrome is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease, which is characterized by hamartomatous polyposis and mucocutaneous pigmentation mainly over the circum-oral region. Patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome seek medical attention whenever there are complications such as intussusception, bleeding from the polyps, etc. Occasionally, gastrointestinal tract malignancies have been reported in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. In this paper, we report a patient with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome who had multiple complications and polyposis involving the appendix, because involvement of the appendix i
