The effects of di-(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEPH) on the levels of cytochrome P-450 and b5 monooxygenases were studied in the rat kidney and liver in acute renal failure induced by glycerol. Intramuscular injection of glycerol (50%,10 ml x kg(-1)) to rats produced proximal tubular damage and acute renal failure. The indicators of renal function, serum urea and creatinine significantly increased (480 and 350 percent, respectively). In control and glycerol-treated animals DEPH had no significant effect on the concentrations of serum urea and creatinine. Twenty-four hours after glycerol injection

OBJECTIVE: To observe whether there are any injuries to muscle and deleterious effects on the liver and kidneys during training and after competition in Thai boxers.
METHODS: Serum levels of intracellular enzymes and specific markers in the urine were measured during training and after fighting in Thai boxers.
RESULTS: During the training period, the activities of muscle enzymes were significantly increased whereas those of the liver enzymes and creatinine clearance were not changed. After a match, on the other hand, both liver and muscle enzyme activities were elevated but renal function wa

The effects of elevated temperatures and the time-temperature combinations for irreversible damage are outlined. Coagulation abnormalities and the effects on the kidney, liver, heart, brain and serum enzymes, the role of electrolytes and water, including salt deficiency and the controversial question of salt supplements, potassium deficiency, changes in other electrolytes and sweat solutes, and rhabdomyolysis (including a discussion of experimental work on dogs) are reviewed. The section ends with a discussion of the effects of drugs and an account of a recent fatal case of heat stroke which m

LINDHOLM, A., H.-E. JOHANSSON & P. KJÆRSGAARD: Acute rhabdomyolysis (“tying-up”) in standardbred horses. A morphological and biochemical study. Acta vet. scand. 1974, 15, 325–339. — Morphological, biochemical and histochemical changes were studied in muscle needle biopsy specimens (gluteus medius) from 59 standardbred trotters with acute clinical symptoms of the “tying-up” disease. All horses had increased levels of serum enzymes SGOT and SCPK. The biopsy specimens were taken at various intervals after onset of clinical symptoms (1–4 hrs., 18–24 hrs. and 2–20 days). Ry light microscopy it was

A variety of drugs used in clinical practice may cause myopathy or interfere with neuromuscular transmission. The precise incidence of such … y of drugs may cause an acute or subacute painful necrotising myopathy which may be associated with myoglobinuria, at times leading to acute renal failure. Clofibrate and epsilon aminocaproic acid are the drugs most frequently implicated, but a similar syndrome may occur in alcoholics and heroin addicts. Certain hypocholesterolaemic agents may induce myotonia b …

Malignant hyperthermia is defined in the International Classification of Diseases as a progressive life-threatening hyperthermic reaction occurring during general anaesthesia. Malignant hyperthermia has an underlying genetic basis, and genetically susceptible individuals are at risk of developing malignant hyperthermia if they are exposed to any of the potent inhalational anaesthetics or suxamethonium. It can also be described as a malignant hypermetabolic syndrome. There are no specific clinical features of malignant hyperthermia and the condition may prove fatal unless it is recognised in it

The first Italian case of spinning-induced exertional rhabdomyolysis is presented here. The spinning is an expanding fitness activity which uses a stationary bike, that in some rare cases described in literature can induce rhabdomyolysis. In our patient, through magnetic resonance imaging, we detected a clear-cut temporal dissociation between clinical-biochemical healing and anatomical recovery. In fact we found that the improvement of magnetic resonance picture was much slower than the vanishing of myalgias and normalization of serum myoglobin and enzymes. This observation could be useful to

We studied six oliguric patients with rhabdomyolysis-induced acute renal failure. On admission, all had marked hyperphosphatemia and hypocalcemia associated with low levels of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D]. During the early polyuric phase, moderate hypercalcemia was accompanied by marked elevations in plasma 1,25(OH)2D and persistent elevations in parathyroid hormone (both amino and carboxy terminals). During the late polyuric phase, the levels of serum calcium and 1,25(OH)2D reverted to normal. Thus, in rhabdomyolysis-induced acute renal failure, the hypocalcemia of the oliguric

BACKGROUND: Renal cortical/proximal tubule cholesterol accumulation, with preferential localization within plasma membrane "detergent resistant microdomains" (DRMs: rafts/caveolae), is a hallmark of the maintenance phase of acute renal failure (ARF). This study addressed two related issues: (1) Are maintenance-phase cholesterol increases accompanied by an up-regulation of caveolin, a DRM/caveolar-associated cholesterol binding protein? (2) Is DRM cholesterol/caveolin homeostasis acutely altered during the induction phase of ARF?
METHODS: Mouse kidneys were subjected to ischemia +/- reperfusio

Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy are caused by a mutation in the dystrophin gene, located on the short arm of the X chromosome. Three so called dystrophinopathy patients, a women aged 54 and two men aged 23 and 21 years, suffered from a severe dilated cardiomyopathy. Such a cardiomyopathy can develop in both carriers and patients. In addition, it is often more important for prognosis than muscle weakness. For these two reasons it is important to screen both groups for (early) cardiological abnormalities. If these are present, regular follow-up is necessary to start timely therapy. When c

The first case of exercise-induced acute renal failure (EIARF) is reported measuring the blood flow and arterial resistance in the kidney by pulsed Doppler ultrasound. A 20-year-old Japanese male suffered from severe loin pain and non-oliguric acute renal failure after strenuous exercise. Serum myoglobin and creatine phosphokinase were normal and urinary myoglobin was not detectable. The Doppler pattern in several segmental arteries showed a slow end-diastolic velocity (EV) and a high resistance index (RI), indicating increased renal vascular resistance, which suggested severe renal vasoconstr

Recent developments in alcoholism : an official publication of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism, the Research Society on Alcoholism, and the National Council on Alcoholism1986eng
This chapter reviews the disturbances of the serum sodium and potassium concentrations, acid-base imbalances, and acute renal dysfunction that are seen frequently in alcoholic patients. The hyponatremia common in decompensated cirrhotics is caused by an impairment of renal free water clearance and concomitant water ingestion. Excessive proximal renal tubular sodium reabsorption and nonosmotic vasopressin release underlie the defect in renal water excretion in cirrhosis. Restriction of water intake is the principal therapeutic measure for hyponatremia. Hypokalemia is common in alcoholics but wh
