A generative adversarial network for synthetization of regions of interest based on digital mammograms.

Deep learning (DL) models are becoming pervasive and applicable to computer vision, image processing, and synthesis problems. The performance of these models is often improved through architectural configuration, tweaks, the use of enormous training data, and skillful selection of hyperparameters. The application of deep learning models to medical image processing has yielded interesting performance, capable of correctly detecting abnormalities in medical digital images, making them surpass human physicians. However, advancing research in this domain largely relies on the availability of train

A CNN-based unified framework utilizing projection loss in unison with label noise handling for multiple Myeloma cancer diagnosis.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of plasma cells. Similar to other forms of cancer, it demands prompt diagnosis for reducing the risk of mortality. The conventional diagnostic tools are resource-intense and hence, these solutions are not easily scalable for extending their reach to the masses. Advancements in deep learning have led to rapid developments in affordable, resource optimized, easily deployable computer-assisted solutions. This work proposes a unified framework for MM diagnosis using microscopic blood cell imaging data that addresses the key challenges of inter-class visual sim

Improving blood cells classification in peripheral blood smears using enhanced incremental training.

Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) analysis is a vital routine test carried out by medical specialists to assess some health aspects of individuals. The automation of blood analysis has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years, as it will not only save time, money and reduce errors, but also protect and save lives of front-line workers, especially during pandemics. In this work, deep neural networks are trained on a synthetic blood smears dataset to classify fifteen different white blood cell and platelet subtypes and morphological abnormalities. For classifying platelets, a hybrid app

Towards the Segmentation and Classification of White Blood Cell Cancer Using Hybrid Mask-Recurrent Neural Network and Transfer Learning.

Inside the bone marrow, plasma cells are created, and they are a type of white blood cells. They are made from B lymphocytes. Antigens are produced by plasma cells to combat bacteria and viruses and prevent inflammation and illness. Multiple myeloma is a plasma cell cancer that starts in the bone marrow and causes the formation of abnormal plasma cells. Multiple myeloma is firmly identified by examining bone marrow samples under a microscope for myeloma cells. To diagnose myeloma cells, pathologists have to be very selective. Furthermore, because the ultimate decision is based on human sight a

Adaptive tracking control of an unmanned aerial system based on a dynamic neural-fuzzy disturbance estimator.

The main goal of this study is developing an adaptive controller which can solve the trajectory tracking for a class of quadcopter unmanned aerial system (UAS), namely a quadrotor. The control design introduces a new paradigm for adaptive controllers based on the implementation of a set of differential neural networks (DNNs) in the consequence section of a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy inference system. This dynamic fuzzy inference structure was used to approximate the UAS description. The particular form of interaction between neural networks and fuzzy inference systems proposed in the present wo

Combining DC-GAN with ResNet for blood cell image classification.

In medicine, white blood cells (WBCs) play an important role in the human immune system. The different types of WBC abnormalities are related to different diseases so that the total number and classification of WBCs are critical for clinical diagnosis and therapy. However, the traditional method of white blood cell classification is to segment the cells, extract features, and then classify them. Such method depends on the good segmentation, and the accuracy is not high. Moreover, the insufficient data or unbalanced samples can cause the low classification accuracy of model by using deep learni

Machine-learning-based multiple abnormality prediction with large-scale chest computed tomography volumes.

Machine learning models for radiology benefit from large-scale data sets with high quality labels for abnormalities. We curated and analyzed a chest computed tomography (CT) data set of 36,316 volumes from 19,993 unique patients. This is the largest multiply-annotated volumetric medical imaging data set reported. To annotate this data set, we developed a rule-based method for automatically extracting abnormality labels from free-text radiology reports with an average F-score of 0.976 (min 0.941, max 1.0). We also developed a model for multi-organ, multi-disease classification of chest CT volum

Automated Diagnosis of Lymphoma with Digital Pathology Images Using Deep Learning.

Recent studies have shown promising results in using Deep Learning to detect malignancy in whole slide imaging, however, they were limited to just predicting a positive or negative finding for a specific neoplasm. We attempted to use Deep Learning with a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm to build a lymphoma diagnostic model for four diagnostic categories: (1) benign lymph node, (2) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, (3) Burkitt lymphoma, and (4) small lymphocytic lymphoma. Our software was written in Python language. We obtained digital whole-slide images of Hematoxylin and Eosin staine

Medical knowledge embedding based on recursive neural network for multi-disease diagnosis.

The representation of knowledge based on first-order logic captures the richness of natural language and supports multiple probabilistic inference models. Although symbolic representation enables quantitative reasoning with statistical probability, it is difficult to utilize with machine learning models as they perform numerical operations. In contrast, knowledge embedding (i.e., high-dimensional and continuous vectors) is a feasible approach to complex reasoning that can not only retain the semantic information of knowledge, but also establish the quantifiable relationship among embeddings. Segmentation of the uterine wall by an ensemble of fully convolutional neural networks.

In the past decades, the number of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures for the conception of a child has been rising continuously, however, the success rate of artificial insemination remained low. According to current statistics, large portion of unsuccessful IVF relates to some women' factors. As the directly related female organ, the proper investigation of the uterus has primary importance. Namely, visible markers may indicate inflammations or other negative effects that jeopardize successful implantation. The purpose of this study is to support the observability of the uterus from thi

Identification of recent cases of hepatitis C virus infection using physical-chemical properties of hypervariable region 1 and a radial basis function neural network classifier.

BACKGROUND: Identification of acute or recent hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections is important for detecting outbreaks and devising timely public health interventions for interruption of transmission. Epidemiological investigations and chemistry-based laboratory tests are 2 main approaches that are available for identification of acute HCV infection. However, owing to complexity, both approaches are not efficient. Here, we describe a new sequence alignment-free method to discriminate between recent (R) and chronic (C) HCV infection using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data derived from the HC

[ECG pattern classification by feature searching algorithm based on maximal divergence].

This paper presents a method of using feature searching algorithm based on maximal divergence value to get the optimized feature combinations at different dimensions from feature space. Feature space is obtained through wavelet transform on ECG beat. Then the feature vector is determined by analyzing the changes of divergence value of those optimized feature combinations along with the dimensions. BP artificial neural network is trained by the feature vector and four types of ECG beats(normal beat, left bundle branch block beat, right bundle branch block beat and paced beat) obtained from MIT-

A neural network approach for the determination of interhospital transport mode.

We report on the construction of neural networks for determining whether pediatric patients requiring transport to a tertiary care center should be moved by air or by ground. The networks were based on the functional-link net architecture. In two experiments, feedforward supervised-learning neural nets were trained with examples of an expert's decisions and then were used in a consulting mode to provide advice on cases not previously encountered. Training and validation were performed by a combination of the k-fold cross-validation and leaving-one-out sampling methods. Use of the functional-li

Computing by Robust Transience: How the Fronto-Parietal Network Performs Sequential, Category-Based Decisions.

Decision making involves dynamic interplay between internal judgements and external perception, which has been investigated in delayed match-to-category (DMC) experiments. Our analysis of neural recordings shows that, during DMC tasks, LIP and PFC neurons demonstrate mixed, time-varying, and heterogeneous selectivity, but previous theoretical work has not established the link between these neural characteristics and population-level computations. We trained a recurrent network model to perform DMC tasks and found that the model can remarkably reproduce key features of neuronal selectivity at t

Cerebellar contribution to multisensory integration: A computational modeling exploration.

The remarkable ability of the human brain to create a coherent perception of reality relies heavily on multisensory integration-the complex process of combining inputs from different senses. While this mechanism is fundamental to our understanding of the world, its underlying neural architecture remains partially unknown. This study investigates the role of the cerebellum in multisensory integration through a novel computational approach inspired by clinical observations of a patient with cerebellar agenesis. With reference to the clinical data comparing an acerebellar patient with age-matched

New approaches to shock and trauma research: learning from multidisciplinary exchange.

BACKGROUND: Our understanding of the complex network of pathophysiology after multiple injury is limited. It is proposed to overcome the limitations of the traditional linear reductionism approach by merging the expertise of biology and medicine with other disciplines such as mathematics, physics and computer science. METHODS: We organized a two-days-workshop, where surgeons and surgical scientists explained the problem from the medical (pathophysiological) perspective to a well selected group of German applied mathematicians and computer scientists. Vice versa they presented and discussed th
