Connectivity-based parcellation of the human orbitofrontal cortex.

The primate orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is involved in reward processing, learning, and decision making. Research in monkeys has shown that this region is densely connected with higher sensory, limbic, and subcortical regions. Moreover, a parcellation of the monkey OFC into two subdivisions has been suggested based on its intrinsic anatomical connections. However, in humans, little is known about any functional subdivisions of the OFC except for a rather coarse medial/lateral distinction. Here, we used resting-state fMRI in combination with unsupervised clustering techniques to investigate whet

Salience network-midbrain dysconnectivity and blunted reward signals in schizophrenia.

Theories of schizophrenia propose that abnormal functioning of the neural reward system is linked to negative and psychotic symptoms, by disruption of reward processing and promotion of context-independent false associations. Recently, it has been argued that an insula-anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) salience network system enables switching of brain states from the default mode to a task-related activity mode. Abnormal interaction between the insula-ACC system and reward processing regions may help explain abnormal reinforcer processing and symptoms. Here we use functional magnetic resonance

Connectional heterogeneity of the ventral part of the macaque area 46.

We found that the ventral part of the prefrontal area 46 (46v) is connectionally heterogeneous. Specifically, the rostral part (46vr) displayed an almost exclusive and extensive intraprefrontal connectivity and extraprefrontal connections limited to area 24 and inferotemporal areas. In contrast, the caudal part (46vc) mostly displayed intraprefrontal connectivity with ventrolateral areas and robust connectivity with frontal and parietal sensorimotor areas. Based on a topographic organization of these connections, 3 fields were identified in area 46vc. A caudal field (caudal 46vc) was preferent

Surgical anatomy of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to describe the distal pathway of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris (DNC) from gross anatomical and histological studies of cadaver specimens. METHODS: We performed dissections on 14 intact adult cadaver vulva specimens using 2× loupe magnification and microscopy. The DNC was identified by gross dissection and confirmed histologically by staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome (MT), and S100 antibody. The DNC pathway and its branches were followed from the pubic rami to the glans clitoris. RESULTS: The DNC travels inferior to the infer

Disorders of higher gaze control.

The neural centers in the cerebral hemispheres, both cortex and basal ganglia, involved in the generation of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements have been well delineated in terms of their location and function. For the generation of saccades these include the frontal eye fields, the supplementary eye field, and the intraparietal sulcus, and in the basal ganglia the caudate nucleus and the substantia nigra, pars compacta. The generation of pursuit eye movements involves the middle temporal (area V5) and medial superior temporal areas and the frontal eye field. These centers and their con

Topsy turvy: functions of climbing and mossy fibers in the vestibulo-cerebellum.

The cerebellum's role in sensory-motor control and adaptation is undisputed. However, a key hypothesis pertaining to the function of cerebellar circuitry lacks experimental support. It is universally assumed that the discharge of mossy fibers accounts for modulation of Purkinje cell "simple spikes" (SSs). This assumption acts as a prism through which all other functions of cerebellar circuitry are viewed. The vestibulo-cerebellum (nodulus and uvula) receives a large, unilateral, vestibular primary afferent mossy fiber projection. We can test its role in modulating Purkinje cell SSs by recordin

The relationship between callosal axons and cortical neurons in the planum temporale: alterations in schizophrenia.

The relationship between "connectivity" measures such as DTI and the cellular alterations in the cortex that give rise to those connections remains unclear. Cytoarchitectural changes in the planum temporale (PT) suggest impaired layer III feedforward projection neurons in schizophrenia. Altered hemispheric asymmetry of the PT has been reported in patients, along with altered white matter density in the corpus callosum, and there is anomalous activation of the PT during auditory hallucinations. We measured layer III cell density and pyramidal neuron size in PT of both hemispheres of post-mortem

Distortions and disconnections: disrupted brain connectivity in autism.

The past few years have seen considerable interest in findings of abnormal brain connectivity in the autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We review recent work from neuroimaging and other sources, and argue that there is considerable convergent evidence suggesting that connectivity is disrupted in ASD. We point to evidence both of local over-connectivity and of long-distance under-connectivity, and describe some non-uniformities in this picture, most notably that disruptions appear more severe in later-developing cortical regions. We conclude by discussing a number of extant questions. Firstly, we

Cerebellar motor function in spina bifida meningomyelocele.

Spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM), a congenital neurodevelopmental disorder, involves dysmorphology of the cerebellum, and its most obvious manifestations are motor deficits. This paper reviews cerebellar neuropathology and motor function across several motor systems well studied in SBM in relation to current models of cerebellar motor and timing function. Children and adults with SBM have widespread motor deficits in trunk, upper limbs, eyes, and speech articulators that are broadly congruent with those observed in adults with cerebellar lesions. The structure and function of the cerebellum

An algebra for the analysis of object encoding.

The encoding of the objects from the world around us is one of the major topics of cognitive psychology, yet the principles of object coding in the human brain remain unresolved. Beyond referring to the particular features commonly associated with objects, our ability to categorize and discuss objects in detailed linguistic propositions implies that we have access to generic concepts of each object category with well-specified boundaries between them. Consideration of the nature of generic object concepts reveals that they must have the structure of a probabilistic list array specifying the Ba

Central post-stroke pain: clinical characteristics, pathophysiology, and management.

Central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is a neuropathic pain syndrome that can occur after a cerebrovascular accident. This syndrome is characterised by pain and sensory abnormalities in the body parts that correspond to the brain territory that has been injured by the cerebrovascular lesion. The presence of sensory loss and signs of hypersensitivity in the painful area in patients with CPSP might indicate the dual combination of deafferentation and the subsequent development of neuronal hyperexcitability. The exact prevalence of CPSP is not known, partly owing to the difficulty in distinguishing thi

Imaging evidence for anatomical disturbances and neuroplastic compensation in persons with Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a disorder of chronic motor and vocal tics that begins in childhood. METHODS: A systematic Medline search was conducted to identify existing anatomical imaging studies in persons with TS. RESULTS: Thirty studies were identified, and their methods and findings were reviewed. Findings of reduced caudate volumes across the life span and thinning of sensorimotor cortices that is proportional with tic severity in children with TS implicate these regions in the genesis of tics. Hypertrophy of limbic and prefrontal cortices and a smaller corpus callosum accompa

Primary dystonia: molecules and mechanisms.

Primary dystonia is characterized by abnormal, involuntary twisting and turning movements that reflect impaired motor system function. The dystonic brain seems normal, in that it contains no overt lesions or evidence of neurodegeneration, but functional brain imaging has uncovered abnormalities involving the cortex, striatum and cerebellum, and diffusion tensor imaging suggests the presence of microstructural defects in white matter tracts of the cerebellothalamocortical circuit. Clinical electrophysiological studies show that the dystonic CNS exhibits aberrant plasticity--perhaps related to d

Specific, selective or preferential: comments on category specificity in neuroimaging.

An important goal of functional neuroimaging has been to localize stimulus-specific processes in the brain. Numerous studies have revealed particular patterns of brain activity in different cortical areas in response to different object categories such as faces, body parts, places, words, letters and so forth. However, quite different patterns of activation have been given a similar interpretation in terms of category or domain specificity. Other characteristics than the response to the target category have sometimes been used to address whether a cortical brain area is functionally specialize

Changes in the structure of neuronal connections in the visual cortex of cats with experimentally induced bilateral strabismus.

The spatial distribution of neuronal connections in cortical field 17 was studied in cats with experimentally induced bilateral convergent strabismus on postnatal days 10-14. Horseradish peroxidase was applied microiontophoretically to individual columns of neurons in fields 17 and 18 and retrograde-labeled cells were identified in both hemispheres. Increases and decreases in the extent of intra-hemisphere connections were seen in the mediolateral direction (projections of the horizontal meridian of the visual field). Most columns showed increases in inter-hemisphere connections in this same d

Anatomical and physiological study of respiratory motor innervation in lampreys.

The innervation of gill muscles of lampreys was investigated in a semi-intact preparation in which the respiratory rhythm was maintained for more than 2 days. Lesion experiments showed that the muscles of gill 1 are innervated by nerves VII (facial) and IX (glossopharyngeal), and those of gill 2 by nerve IX and the first branchial branch of nerve X (vagal). The other gills are supplied by the other branchial branches of nerve X. Retrograde tracers, injected in peripheral respiratory nerves, showed that branchial muscles are innervated by VII, IX and X motoneurons. Within the X nucleus, the mot

Vertebro-basilar syndromes causing oculo-motor disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: All functional classes of eye movements require exquisite coordination between cortical, basal ganglia and brainstem centers involved in ocular motor control. Vertebrobasilar stroke may produce a wide spectum of isolated or combined eye-movement disorders. The intent of this article is to summarize the curent knowledge of eye-movement disorders occurring in infarcts involving the different arterial territories of the vertebrobasilar circulation. RECENT FINDINGS: In the last few years there has been an improvement in our understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms that ar

Non-oscillatory discharges of an F-prostaglandin responsive neuron population in the olfactory bulb-telencephalon transition area in lake whitefish.

Our previous studies on olfactory bulbar responses in salmonid fishes suggest that pheromone signals might be processed by a mechanism distinct from that of other odorants. Using in vivo single-unit and electroencephalographic recordings, we investigated response characteristics of olfactory neurons in lake whitefish, Coregonus clupeaformis, a species characterized by high electrophysiological and behavioral sensitivities to the reproductive pheromone candidates F-prostaglandins. We found a neuron population responsive to F-prostaglandins in the ventromedial brain tissue strip connecting the o

Vasopressinergic innervation of the pig pineal gland.

An immunohistochemical study of the pineal gland of the domestic pig was carried out using the antisera raised against vasopressin (VP). The pineal glands were taken from the newborn, 21-day- and 7-month old female pigs. The pig pineal gland is moderately innervated by VP-immunoreactive nerve fibers. They run from the habenular commissure into the connective tissue septa and further into the pineal parenchyma. In the subependymal tissue as well as in the connective tissue septa, the fibers are smooth or with small varicosities and in the parenchyma with large ones. The obtained results point t
