Relational, Ethical, and Care Challenges in ALS: A Systematic Review and Qualitative Metasynthesis of Nurses' Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that leads to severe functional decline and death, imposing significant physical, emotional, and ethical burdens on patients and healthcare providers. With no curative treatment, ALS care depends on the early and sustained integration of palliative care to address complex and evolving needs. Nurses play a pivotal role in this process, yet their lived experiences remain underexplored. This study aimed to synthesize qualitative evidence on nurses' experiences in ALS care, with a focus on emotional, ethical

Positive mental health literacy and job well-being among palliative care nurses: the mediating effect of job crafting.

BACKGROUND: With rising global demand for palliative care, understanding factors influencing nurses' job well-being becomes critical for maintaining quality of practice. Palliative care nurses operate within persistently high-stress environments characterized by recurrent exposure to patient suffering and mortality. It is therefore essential to understand how to keep their minds health and well-being. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between November 2023 and February 2024. A convenience sample of 205 palliative care nurses was recruited from China. A general characteristics ques

The moral middle ground: How moral distress mediates the link between patient-centered communication and palliative caring competence among oncology nurses.

PURPOSE: Oncology nurses face significant emotional and ethical challenges, particularly in delivering palliative care. While patient-centered communication (PCC) is essential for high-quality end-of-life care, its effectiveness may be hindered by moral distress-a psychological response to institutional or ethical constraints. This study examines how moral distress mediates the relationship between patient-centered communication and palliative care competence among oncology nurses. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 200 oncology nurses from four oncology centers across Egypt

Nursing Understanding and Perceptions of Delirium: Assessing Current Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs in a Burn ICU.

The number of delirium days in hospitalized patients directly correlates with mortality and long-term cognitive dysfunction. Burn patients are at greater risk for delirium due to prolonged mechanical ventilation, high sedative and analgesic medication requirements, and the common need for multiple operations. Limited research exists on nurses' understanding and comfort using delirium screening tools and preventive interventions. A process improvement project was developed in a single, regional burn intensive care unit (BICU) with the goal of increasing RN staff awareness of delirium, delirium

Implementation of the evidence review on best practice for confirming the correct placement of nasogastric tube in patients in an acute care hospital.

BACKGROUND: Nasogastric (NG) tube is a device passed through the gastrointestinal tract of patients for the purpose of feeding, gastric decompression and medication administration. However, a small risk involved in the process is that the tube may be misplaced into the trachea during insertion or may get displaced at a later stage, leading to disastrous results. Recent adverse incidences arising out of the misplacement of NG tube raised concerns among the nursing and medical community and the Patient Safety Officer of the hospital. The Evidence Based Nursing Unit, in collaboration with some of

Neonatal heart rate variability and intraventricular hemorrhage: a case study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare heart rate variability (HRV) in low-risk, pre-term infants to one infant diagnosed with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). METHOD: A case study design was used to compare HRV of one subject diagnosed with IVH to a convenience sample of 38 low-risk, pre-term infants at 30 and 31 post-menstrual weeks of age. Heart periods were recorded for 300-s with the infant in an active sleep state. Heart rate variability was quantified by spectral analysis. A confidence interval comparison of the total spectral components (0.02-2.0 Hz), high-frequency compo

Development of the ECMO nursing self-efficacy Perception scale: A validity and reliability study.

Caring for patients receiving ECMO in the ICU is a complex process that requires advanced knowledge, technical skills, and confident clinical decision-making from nurses. Despite the increasing use of ECMO in Türkiye, no comprehensive, validated tool exists to measure ICU nurses' self-efficacy in ECMO care. This methodological study aimed to develop the ECMO Nursing Self-Efficacy Perception Scale (ECMO-SEPS) and evaluate its psychometric properties. The scale was developed in two stages. In the first stage, an item pool was generated through an extensive literature review and qualitative inter

Validity and Internal Consistency of a Rubric for Cervical Collar Placement in Nursing Students.

Background/Objectives: The assessment of clinical competencies in nursing education requires valid and reliable instruments, especially for essential procedures such as the placement of a cervical collar in the care of polytrauma patients. The objective of this study was to analyse the psychometric properties of a rubric designed to assess the placement of cervical collars in nursing students in a low-fidelity clinical simulation environment. Methods: A quasi-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted with 186 undergraduate nursing students, organised into 61 groups, over three academic

Palliative care nursing and moral coherence: Early responses to MAiD as hastened death.

BackgroundSince its inception over half a century ago, a defining attribute of palliative care philosophy has been an insistence that this approach intends to neither hasten death nor prolong life. A commitment to facilitate a 'natural' end-of-life trajectory is ubiquitous in palliative care discourse. However, as an increasing number of jurisdictions around the world legislate to allow assisted death, palliative care providers are having to re-evaluate the relevance of this commitment for the relational ethics of their practice.Research Aims and ParticipantsIn this paper, we explore how a sam

Phase-field modeling of border cell cluster migration in Drosophila.

Collective cell migration is a fundamental biological process that drives events such as embryonic development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. In this study, we develop a biophysically informed phase-field model to investigate the collective migration of the border cell cluster in the Drosophila melanogaster egg chamber. Our model captures key aspects of the egg chamber architecture, including the oocyte, nurse cells, and surrounding epithelium, and incorporates both mechanical forces and biochemical cues that guide cell migration. We introduce the Tangential Interface Migration (TIM) fo

Ableism, disclosure and accommodation among prelicensure bachelor of science in nursing students with invisible disabilities in Saudi Arabia: A qualitative descriptive study.

AIM: To explore how nursing students with invisible disabilities experience ableism and how these experiences shape their decisions about disclosure and the use of academic and clinical accommodations. BACKGROUND: Disability is increasingly represented in nursing education, yet disabled students remain marginal within many diversity and inclusion agendas. Rigid fitness-to-practise norms and stigma can deter students with invisible disabilities from disclosing and from using academic or clinical accommodations. DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive study. METHODS: Twenty undergraduate nursing st

Capturing Interactive Work for Nurses-First Validation of the German IWDS-N as a Multidimensional Measure.

The theoretical framework of interactive work provides a multi-dimensional perspective on the interpersonal demands of nurses in nurse-patient interactions. It is defined by four dimensions: emotional labor directed to the self and others, cooperative work, and subjective acting. While the framework stems from qualitative research, the aim of the current study is to translate it into a quantitative scale to enable measurement of the high interpersonal demands that so often remain implicit. For this reason, we conducted an online survey study (N = 157; 130 women, 25 men, 2 divers) among profess

Relationship between leadership and psychological empowerment in nursing: a meta-analysis exploring the role of country development level.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, empowering nurses has gained importance in decision-making processes, particularly in fast-paced clinical environments. Ethical, transparent and supportive leadership styles have been found to positively influence the psychological empowerment dimensions of nurses, such as meaning, competence, autonomy and influence. However, existing evidence remains fragmented, and the magnitude of this relationship across different health system contexts has not been quantitatively synthesised. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between leadershi
