Interaction of two public health problems in Turkish schoolchildren: nutritional deficiencies and goitre.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the interaction of and association between frequency of goitre detected by palpation, nutritional status evaluated by anthropometric indices and socio-economic status in school-aged children. SUBJECTS: One thousand and eighteen prepubertal and pubertal children (aged 6-14 years) attending primary schools in an urban area were included in this study. DESIGN AND SETTING: All subjects were evaluated for the presence of goitre and nutritional status. Thyroid size was assessed using the World Health Organization's (WHO) palpation system (19

Determinants of infant nutrition status in rural farming households before and after harvest.

Infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices determine infant growth, development and health. Despite global recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months, adherence rates are low worldwide for different reasons, largely dependent on environment. In low-income countries, inappropriate IYCF leads to poor nutrition status. This study examined IYCF practices and nutrition outcomes in rural farming households in Tanzania before and after harvest. Mothers and their infants were recruited from two regions in Tanzania. Demographics, health status, IYCF practices, anthropometrics and h

Understanding the perspectives and needs towards midwifery care of women with an eating disorder history during pregnancy and postpartum: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) can affect pregnancy outcomes in multiple ways. This study aims to contribute to the literature about whether and how midwives can support women with EDs in pregnancy and postpartum, and what they should consider when caring for affected women. METHODS: Mothers and becoming mothers who had experienced midwifery care and had a confirmed ED were invited to participate in this qualitative study. An interview guide was created that covered the needs of women with ED history in midwifery care, the influence of midwifery care on the ED, and support options provi

Manganese in Whole Blood and Hair in Patients with Long-Term Home Parenteral Nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Manganese is an essential trace element and indispensable component of nutrition mixtures in long-term home parenteral nutrition (HPN) of patients. On the other hand, neurotoxic effects of excess manganese in the organism have been known for a long time. The objective of the present study was to determine manganese concentration in whole blood and hair of patients with long-term home parenteral nutrition. METHODS: We examined 16 patients (7 men and 9 women) aged from 28 to 68 years on long-term HPN lasting from 4 to 96 months. The short bowel syndrome was an indication for HPN. Th

The Use of Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition in Hospitalized Patients: A Clinical Case Series.

Introduction: Patients with dementia, severe gastrointestinal disorders, or anorexia nervosa are at increased risk of malnutrition and frequently require hospitalization. Nutritional management may be complicated by intolerance or refusal of enteral nutrition (EN), contraindications to EN or central parenteral nutrition (CPN), and delays in long-term strategies such as percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). The existing literature provides limited practical guidance for addressing these challenges in internal medicine settings. This retrospective case series describes three hospitalized ad

Influence of dietary intake and decision-making during pregnancy on birth outcomes.

AIM: This study aimed to examine dietary intake and decision-making in a cohort of pregnant South-East Queensland women to determine compliance with dietary guidelines and the relationships between dietary intake, decision-making and birth outcomes. METHODS: Pregnant women attending maternity services at participating hospitals reported food frequency and motivations using the Maternal Outcomes and Nutrition Tool, a novel digital instrument. Birth outcomes were sourced from hospital records. A cross-sectional cohort design was used to examine the data. RESULTS: Analysis demonstrated suboptim

Maternal nutrition: effects on health in the next generation.

Nearly 20 years ago, it was discovered that low birthweight was associated with an increased risk of adult diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This led to the hypothesis that exposure to undernutrition in early life increases an individual's vulnerability to these disorders, by 'programming' permanent metabolic changes. Implicit in the programming hypothesis is that improving the nutrition of girls and women could prevent common chronic diseases in future generations. Research in India has shown that low birthweight children have increased CVD risk factors, and a unique birth cohort in

Highly Selective Eating in Autism Spectrum Disorder Leading to Scurvy: A Series of Three Patients.

BACKGROUND: Some children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have highly specific food selectivity and therefore are prone to nutritional deficiencies of different kinds. PATIENTS: We document three children with ASD who presented with refusal to walk and gingivitis who underwent comprehensive evaluations before establishing the diagnosis of vitamin C deficiency (scurvy). The symptoms resolved after treatment with vitamin C. CONCLUSIONS: Prevention of nutritional deficiencies in children with ASD is essential, and providing multivitamin supplementation whenever high food selectivity is note

Unusual case of osteopenia associated with nutritional calcium and vitamin D deficiency in an adult dog.

A 6-year-old, spayed female rottweiler was presented for facial enlargement from swelling of the maxilla and mandible. The dog was fed a homemade diet deficient in calcium and vitamin D, suggesting that rubber jaw syndrome was a secondary nutritional disorder. Radiographic and tomodensitometric examinations revealed diffuse bone resorption in the skull. The plasma parathormone concentration was high, and serum 25-hydroxycholecalciferol concentration was low. Based on these findings, nutritional calcium and vitamin D deficiency associated with secondary hyperparathyroidism was diagnosed. Dietar

Understanding the Spatial Predictors of Malnutrition Among 0-2 Years Children in India Using Path Analysis.

Background: Despite several programs and policies to turn down the burden of malnutrition in the country, the rank of India in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) is 102 among 117 countries, which indicates a serious hunger situation. It is essential to design more specific interventions by focusing on the key determinants that may directly or indirectly influence malnutrition in India. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Family and Health Survey-4 (NFHS) (2015-16), we developed a structural equation model to find the direct, indirect, and total effect of various determinants on stunting, wast

Research Priorities on the Relationship between Wasting and Stunting.

BACKGROUND: Wasting and stunting are global public health problems that frequently co-exist. However, they are usually separated in terms of policy, guidance, programming and financing. Though both wasting and stunting are manifestations of undernutrition caused by disease and poor diet, there are critical gaps in our understanding of the physiological relationship between them, and how interventions for one may affect the other. The aim of this exercise was to establish research priorities in the relationships between wasting and stunting to guide future research investments. METHODS AND FIN

Gender differences in self-rated health and mortality association: role of pain-inducing musculoskeletal disorders.

AIMS: We aimed to examine whether pain-inducing musculoskeletal disorders might explain the gender difference in the strength of the self-rated health (SRH)-mortality association. METHODS: We pooled data from two National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (conducted in 1998 and 2001), which were linked to national mortality data of Korea using 13-digit unique personal identification numbers. There were 9,912 study participants, and 456 deaths were recorded (average length of follow-up = 5.7 years). Using a checklist of chronic conditions, the prevalences of major pain-causing musculosk

Neuroinflammation, HPA Axis Dysregulation, Cytokine Activity and Nutritional Modulation in Depression: A PRISMA-compliant Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Depression is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder involving interconnected neuroinflammatory, neuroendocrine, metabolic and gut-brain mechanisms rather than isolated neurotransmitter abnormalities. Emerging evidence suggests that dysregulation of cytokine activity, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and gut microbiota collectively contribute to depressive pathophysiology. This review aimed to synthesise current evidence on these biological interactions and evaluate the potential role of nutritional modulatio

Prevalence, risk factors, and psychosocial impact of self-reported recurrent oral ulceration among Palestinian medical and dental students: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Medical and dental students face unique stressors that may predispose them to oral mucosal disorders. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported recurrent oral ulceration (ROU) in this population and identify independent predictors, assessing the interplay between familial, traumatic, and systemic risk factors. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among 557 Palestinian medical and dental students. Participants completed a validated questionnaire assessing sociodemographics, ROU history (≥ 3 episodes/year), and potential triggers including sys

Nutritional and Psychological Support as a Multidisciplinary Coordinated Approach in the Management of Chronic Liver Disease: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: This review emphasizes a novel, multidisciplinary, coordinated approach in the management of chronic liver diseases (CLDs). BACKGROUND: Chronic liver diseases represent a significant global health burden, marked by a notable shift in the prevalence patterns from virus-related to metabolic and alcohol-related entities. Malnutrition, frailty, and sarcopenia exert a substantial impact on patients with cirrhosis, affecting 75%-90% of cases and escalating as the disease progresses. The European Association for the Study of the Liver recommends a comprehensive approach to nutritional ca
