OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution of lower extremity running injuries and their associated factors.
DESIGN: Descriptive and exploratory study.
PARTICIPANTS: 1004 participants of the 2005 ING Taipei International Marathon.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used a self-developed questionnaire to collect data of previous running injuries and applied multivariate logistic regression modeling to examine relationships between these injuries and associated factors.

This report details the development of a novel HNP containing a variable impedance knee mechanism (VIKM) capable of supporting the knee against collapse while allowing controlled stance phase knee flexion. Gout affecting the axial joints is uncommon; however, its involvement may be complicated by neurological symptoms associated with spinal compression at the affected level. Specific involvement of the odontoid process is even rarer. We report the first case of gout involving the odontoid process with resultant glossopharyngeal (CN IX), vagus (CN X) and hypoglossal (CN XII) nerve palsies.

OBJECTIVE: To confirm previous findings that hip abductor activity measured by electromyography (EMG) on the side contralateral to cane use is reduced during walking in stroke patients. BACKGROUND: A self-contained, self-controlled, pneumatic power harvesting ankle-foot orthosis (PhAFO) to manage foot-drop was developed and tested. Foot-drop is due to a disruption of the motor control pathway and may occur in numerous pathologies such as stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. The objectives for the prototype PhAFO are to provide toe clearance during swing, permit free ankle motion during stance, and harvest the needed power with an underfoot bellow pump pressurized during the stance phase of walking.

BACKGROUND: Whilst laterally wedged insoles, worn inside the shoes, are advocated as a simple, inexpensive, non-toxic self-administered intervention for knee osteoarthritis (OA), there is currently limited evidence to support their use. Compartment syndrome of the thigh in children is rare. We report a case of compartment syndrome of the thigh in an infant with a femur fracture resulting from suspected nonaccidental trauma. The delayed presentation of this injury may have been contributory to the development of compartment syndrome. The subtle physical findings in this case underscore the need for a high index of suspicion in making the diagnosis of compartment syndrome. Spinal subdural hematoma (SSDH) is a rare entity and post-traumatic cervical SSDH is very rare. Review of the literature revealed 8 reported cases of traumatic SSDH and only 2 were cervical. The exact mechanism and pathogenesis of SSDHs are unclear. There are still controversies about the source of bleeding and mechanisms of formation of a hematoma. Here we report a case of a unique traumatic craniocervical junction focal subdural hematoma in an 8-year-old boy and discuss the possible mechanisms of SSDHs in trauma cases.

Two questions were investigated: Do ankle devices have any influence on sports performance? Are there any differences between the devices? 31 participants could be included. The average age was 24.5 (+/- 4.1). The participants exercised 5.8 hours/week. We tested 41 ankles without any previous injury. With the Cybex 6000 four parameters were evaluated. Torque maximum for the plantarflexion, range of motion, work in Joule. The ankles were tested with three different ortheses, ankle taping and without any device. The Friedman Test was used to evaluate differences between the five test conditions.

Eighty children with idiopathic toe walking (ITW) were examined 2-8 years (average, 34 months) after initial presentation to compare outcomes [passive ankle dorsiflexion (DF) and parental satisfaction] after three treatment modalities: observation, cast/brace treatment, or surgical triceps surae lengthening. This is a cross-sectional study on the use of halovest appliance in the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Department, Kuala Lumpur Hospital from June 1993 to September 1996.
