Pathology of retroperitoneal sarcomas: A brief review.

Sarcomas represent a highly heterogeneous group of tumors as reflected in the significant overlap between their histologic phenotypes between the different types, posing diagnostic challenges for the pathologist. Definitive tumor classification is increasingly important because of prognostication and emergence of targeted therapies for some of the sarcoma types. In this review, we highlight pertinent pathologic and molecular aspects of sarcomas common in the retroperitoneum, relevant to the surgical oncologist.

Lance-Adams syndrome associated with cerebellar pathology.

Lance-Adams syndrome (LAS) is an uncommon neurological disorder characterized by the development of chronic post-hypoxic myoclonus. There are relatively few cases described following successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation. We report a patient who developed LAS 3 months after successful resuscitation. Cerebral imaging studies indicate that brain pathology in LAS patients is not uniform, suggesting that the pathophysiology of myoclonus may vary from patient to patient. Our patient adds to this etiological heterogeneity by demonstrating the unusual feature of cerebellar pathology by both cerebr…

ApoE4 Accelerates Early Seeding of Amyloid Pathology.

Accumulation and aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) in the brain is an initiating step in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The ε4 allele of apolipoprotein E (apoE) gene is the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset AD. Although there is strong evidence showing that apoE4 enhances amyloid pathology, it is not clear what the critical stage(s) is during amyloid development in which apoE4 has the strongest impact. Using apoE inducible mouse models, we show that increased expression of astrocytic apoE4, but not apoE3, during the seeding stage of amyloid development enhanced amyloid de…

Filariasis Orchitis-Differential for Acute Scrotum Pathology.

Granulomatous Orchitis secondary to lymphatic filiarisis is a rare diagnosis within the United States. We report a case of a 22yo Male from Sri Lanka, with a new onset scrotal swelling and palpable right testicular mass. Ultrasound identified a 1 cm right testicular mass with signs of tunica albuginea invasion. A right inguinal radical orchiectomy was performed and pathology showed Filarial orchitis. This report describes the detailed history, physical exam, and diagnostic workup and treatment options for a rare entity for acute scrotal pathology.

Pathology, imaging, and treatment of cardiac tumours.

Cardiac tumours are a rare, but often devastating, clinical diagnosis. They encompass a broad set of lesions that include both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. Cardiac tumours are often diagnosed incidentally during work-up for other conditions, or during ultrasound, CT, or MRI scans for unusual or nonspecific symptoms. In the past decade, important changes have been made in the nomenclature and the recommendations for diagnosis of cardiac tumours, as highlighted by the WHO's 2015 revision of the classification of cardiac tumours. Moreover, important advances in molecular genetics and

Autoimmune Neutropenia Updates: Etiology, Pathology, and Treatment.

Autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) is defined as a neutrophil count <1.5 × 109/L caused by increased peripheral destruction of neutrophils from an underlying autoimmune mechanism in which autoantibodies are directed against a patient's own neutrophils. AIN has a multifactorial etiology ranging from an idiopathic primary phenomenon to secondary disorders associated with established autoimmune diseases. Primary AIN is more prevalent in children, generally self-limited, and typically manifests as a sole hematologic abnormality. Secondary AIN is more common in adults and often occurs in the setting of c

The pathology of eclampsia: An autopsy series.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the main lesions in the liver, brain, and kidney from autopsies of women who died of eclampsia and characterize the endothelial injury. METHODS: Cases were identified from a study involving 317 maternal deaths (2003-2006) conducted at the Maputo Central Hospital (Maputo, Mozambique) in association with ISGlobal (Barcelona, Spain). Histology slides along with stains for endothelial, histiocyte, and platelet markers (CD31, CD34, CD68, CD42B) were reviewed to identify the relevant lesions. Malondialdehyde stain was performed to demonstrate free radical generation. RESULTS

Genetics meets pathology - an increasingly important relationship.

The analytical power of modern methods for DNA analysis has outstripped our capability to interpret and understand the data generated. To make good use of this genomic data in a biomedical setting (whether for research or diagnosis), it is vital that we understand the mechanisms through which mutations affect biochemical pathways and physiological systems. This lies at the centre of what genetics is all about, and it is the reason why genetics and genomics should go hand in hand whenever possible. In this Annual Review Issue of The Journal of Pathology, we have assembled a collection of 16 exp…

Vascular ossification: Pathology, mechanisms, and clinical implications.

In recent years, the mechanisms and clinical significance of vascular calcification have been increasingly investigated. For over a century, however, pathologists have recognized that vascular calcification is a form of heterotopic ossification. In this review, we aim to describe the pathology and molecular processes of vascular ossification, to characterize its clinical significance and treatment options, and to elucidate areas that require further investigation. The molecular mechanisms of vascular ossification involve the activation of regulators including bone morphogenic proteins and chon…

Spontaneous reproductive pathology in female guinea pigs.

Reproductive pathology of domestic guinea pigs is underreported to date. To provide a comprehensive review of uterine disease in guinea pigs, we performed a retrospective study of the pathology archives of the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine. By histology, 13 of 37 uterine lesions in 23 animals were neoplastic; the other 24 nonneoplastic lesions included cystic endometrial hyperplasia (16 of 24), endometrial hemorrhage (3 of 24), pyometra (2 of 24), polyp (2 of 24), and mucometra (1 of 24). The most common guinea pig uterine neoplasms were uterine leiomyomas (6 of 13), …

Muscle Pathology in Free-Ranging Stranded Cetaceans.

Despite the profound impact that skeletal muscle disorders may pose for the daily activities of wild terrestrial and marine mammals, such conditions have been rarely described in cetaceans. In this study, the authors aimed to determine the nature and prevalence of skeletal muscle lesions in small and large odontocetes and mysticetes ( n = 153) from 19 different species. A macroscopic evaluation of the epaxial muscle mass and a histologic examination of the longissimus dorsi muscle were performed in all cases. The only macroscopically evident change was variable degrees of atrophy of the epaxia

Overview of Frontal Sinus Pathology and Management.

The frontal sinus is the most complex of all paranasal sinuses. Given its proximity to the cranial vault and orbit, frontal sinus pathology can progress to involve these structures and lead to significant morbidity, or even mortality. Surgical management of the frontal sinus is technically challenging. Various open and endoscopic surgical techniques are available to the otolaryngologist. This article presents an overview of the major disease entities that affect the frontal sinus, with a special emphasis on treatment principles and surgical management.

[Anorexia and borderline personality disorder : bonds pathology].

Comorbidity with a borderline personality disorder is far from rare in patients suffering from eating disorders. Clinically, this presents as chronic instability in many areas: interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, mood and acting out. Treatment is mainly based on a containing and reassuring therapeutic framework. A care plan may be put in place that incorporates reducing impulsive harmful, eating and self-harming behaviours. Dialectical behaviour therapy is intended in particular to prevent suicide risk in borderline personality disorder patients.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis causes small fiber pathology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our aim was to address the correlation between small fiber loss and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for disease onset, phenotype, genotype, duration, severity and sensory findings. METHODS: Consecutive patients referred for suspected ALS were screened. Exclusion criteria were possible ALS and previous diagnosis or known risk factors for small fiber neuropathies. A sural nerve conduction study (NCS) was bilaterally recorded. The ALS functional rating scale revised was administered and loss of functions were calculated using the Milano-Torino staging (MITOS) system.

Microglial immunophenotype in dementia with Alzheimer's pathology.

BACKGROUND: Genetic risk factors for Alzheimer's disease imply that inflammation plays a causal role in development of the disease. Experimental studies suggest that microglia, as the brain macrophages, have diverse functions, with their main role in health being to survey the brain parenchyma through highly motile processes. METHODS: Using the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies resources, we have immunophenotyped microglia to investigate their role in dementia with Alzheimer's pathology. Cerebral cortex obtained at post-mortem from 299 participants was analysed by…

Veterinary Forensic Pathology: The Search for Truth.

Veterinary forensic pathology is emerging as a distinct discipline, and this special issue is a major step forward in establishing the scientific basis of the discipline. A forensic necropsy uses the same skill set needed for investigations of natural disease, but the analytical framework and purpose of forensic pathology differ significantly. The requirement of legal credibility and all that it entails distinguishes the forensic from routine diagnostic cases. Despite the extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge afforded by their training, almost 75% of veterinary pathologists report that …
