This paper describes a case of autogenous tooth transplantation. An external inflammatory root resorption developed in a 30-year-old female patient and was successfully treated with the placement of calcium hydroxide-based intracanal dressings. Autotransplantation of tooth 32 into the extraction socket of tooth 30 was carried out with no intraoperative complications and uneventful postoperative course. However, the patient did not appear on the 14th postoperative day to initiate endodontic therapy of the transplanted tooth. She did not return for 3 months, at which time the clinical and periap

Although a number of techniques have been proposed for clinical crown lengthening procedures, all have some limitation in terms of function and esthetics. This report presents the clinical and radiographic results of a surgical extrusion technique for clinical crown lengthening. Atraumatic surgical extrusion using a specially designed instrument (Periotome) was performed in three cases in which it was expected that extensive resective osseous surgery would have to be used for crown lengthening. Full-thickness mucoperiosteal flaps were raised both labially and palatally. The tooth was carefully

The present clinical study investigated the outcome of intentional replantation using Emdogain for periodontal healing following trauma-related ankylosis. Sixteen ankylosed teeth affected by replacement resorption were treated as follows: After tooth extraction, the root canal was obturated with a retrograde titanium post. Emdogain was applied to the root surface and into the extraction socket with subsequent replantation of the tooth. Evaluation parameters included horizontal and vertical Periotest scores, percussion sound and periapical radiographs. All findings were compared to those of the

Apical periodontitis is caused primarily by microorganisms residing in the root canals of affected teeth. Nevertheless, there is convincing evidence implicating other independent factors that adversely affect the outcome of conventional root canal therapy. In this paper, morphological evidence is presented in support of the potential role of two endogenous factors that may interfere with post-endodontic healing of the periapex. The specimens consisted of a surgical biopsy of an asymptomatic periapical lesion which persisted for a follow-up period of 44 months. The biopsy was processed for corr

Periodontal disease is one of the main affections of the oral cavity of dogs. Its main complication is the formation of periapical abscess, which, when affecting the maxillary canine teeth, can lead to the formation of oronasal fistulae. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of self-curing glass ionomer cement, covered by photopolymerizable adhesive, as a protective element for mucoperiosteal or gingival flap sutures in oral surgery of dogs. We studied 15 dogs from the clinical routine of the dental service of a teaching veterinary hospital, which needed oral surgeries to

Both hard and soft tissue undergo change after tooth extraction. In particular, the bone tissue surrounding teeth with fenestration or dehiscence defects undergoes dramatic change following tooth extraction, which can compromise further rehabilitation of the area. Adequate alveolar bone volume and keratinized mucosa are critical to the success of implant therapy. Therefore, the anatomic dimension of the alveolar ridge must be adequate to achieve an esthetically acceptable outcome of implant therapy. Previous studies have proposed many clinical techniques for preserving the extraction socket. T

The pulpo-dentine complex is normally protected from exogenous substances in the oral cavity by the overlying enamel or cementum. Dental caries, dental trauma, enamel/dentine cracks, and restorative procedures commonly breach the integrity of enamel or cementum and may allow infection of the pulpo-dentine complex to occur, possibly leading to pulp and periapical inflammatory disease. Infection of the intraradicular space is a complex and dynamic process involving interactions between host and microbial factors. An understanding of these factors has led to the development of endodontic techniqu

BACKGROUND: Phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) is located within cells, and is involved in regulating cell survival, proliferation, apoptosis and angiogenesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of PI3K in the process of bone destruction in apical periodontitis, and provide reference data for the treatment of this disease.
METHODS: The relative mRNA expression of PI3K, Acp5 and NFATc1 in the normal human periodontal ligament and in chronic apical periodontitis were analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). A mouse model of apical periodontitis wa

This study was to investigate whether the programmed death-1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) and T-helper 17 (Th17)/regulatory T (Treg) balance are associated with chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) relived by 0.1% nano-silver. CAP rat models were established by opening the first molars of the right and left mandible and exposing the pulp cavity to the oral cavity. CAP model was verified by cone-beam computed tomography, X-ray digital radiovisiography, and hematoxylin-eosin (H and E) staining. The rats were randomly divided into the sham, Ca(OH)2, and 0.1% nano-silver groups (n = 12 i

In oral infectious diseases, recalcitrant biofilms, escalating antibiotic resistance, and limitations of local drug delivery within complex anatomical microenvironments necessitate innovative strategies for effective and precise therapy. Among magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), iron oxide-based nanoparticles (IONPs) have attracted considerable attention in the management of oral infectious diseases because of their unique physicochemical features, including magnetic responsiveness, tunable morphology, and favorable biocompatibility. These properties enable MNPs to exert multimodal antibacterial ef

Around 10-20% of sinusitis have a dental etiology. Odontogenic sinusitis is generally caused by periodontitis, peri-implantitis, periapical pathology, or oroantral communication. Ectopic teeth are a rare cause of chronic odontogenic sinusitis. We present a rare case of chronic sinusitis caused by five ectopic teeth. A 39-year-old-female patient presented to our clinic with complaints of facial pain over the left cheek, ipsilateral nasal obstruction, ipsilateral rhinorrhea, and coughing over the last five years. Physical examination revealed a febrile patient. There was an ipsilateral purulent

Intraosseous (IO) anesthesia has emerged as an effective primary and supplemental technique for achieving profound pulpal anesthesia during root canal treatment, particularly in mandibular molars. However, needle fracture during IO administration is an exceedingly rare complication with no established management protocol. A 29-year-old female presented with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and symptomatic apical periodontitis in tooth #30, requiring nonsurgical root canal treatment. A first-year postgraduate endodontic student administered IO anesthesia using the QuickSleeper system (Dental H

Apical periodontitis (AP) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by immune dysregulation and periapical bone destruction. Although targeting macrophage plasticity represents a promising strategy, there are still few effective and safe bioactive interventions available. In this study, we integrated bioinformatics analysis with clinical validation and identified PGC1α as a critical hub gene linking AP pathology to macrophage polarization. Analysis of human clinical samples confirmed a negative correlation between PGC1α expression and pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β) as well as oxidati

INTRODUCTION: Pulp stones (PS) are incidental, mostly asymptomatic, radiographic findings that may hinder endodontic therapy. They are observed as radiopaque aggregates within coronal or radicular pulp tissue on intraoral periapical, bite-wing, panoramic radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography images. This study aimed to evaluate PS prevalence in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus (DM), and chronic periodontitis (CP) as compared with controls, as a function of age and sex.
