INTRODUCTION: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive related disorder characterized by an individual's preoccupation with the appearance of at least 1 perceived physical flaw. The bodily concerns held by individuals with BDD are largely unnoticeable, if at all, to other individuals. Those living with BDD are compelled to engage in repetitive behaviors or cognitive acts that interfere with daily function and activities. Despite the high prevalence of BDD in patients who seek cosmetic procedures (ie, as high as 1 in 5 such patients) and the availability of validated screening

BACKGROUND: Over the past 20 years, innovations in microsurgical technique have coincided with advances in orthoplastic approaches. However, no single algorithm exists to guide management of limb salvage versus amputation. As such, one would expect these procedures to be performed at equal rates given studies showing similar outcomes. Anecdotally, the observation at the authors' institution is that amputations are being performed more frequently. The purpose of this study was to determine trends in lower extremity trauma management.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a Lev

BACKGROUND: Otoplasty is a century-old procedure that, through continued modifications, now has over two hundred different procedures described in the literature. In this article, we seek to describe the anatomy and principles of aesthetic otoplasty, as well as some of the key contributions to aesthetic otoplasty. This article will also outline some of the most commonly used techniques today and associated patient outcomes.
METHODS: We present a review of the literature of relevant anatomy, pathophysiology and common techniques and outcomes. We also provide a discussion of several patients wi

Volumetric rejuvenation of the periorbital region is based on an analysis of the aesthetics of the attractive youthful eye contrasted with the typical characteristics of aging. Traditional rejuvenation techniques emphasized fat and skin removal leading to "done" appearing results. The incorporation of volume with these techniques based on the specific analysis of volume loss produces more natural appearing true rejuvenation.

Use of the operating microscope created many new possibilities in plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery. Initially most work was done in digital replantation and, somewhat later, in transfers of toes for reconstruction of amputated thumbs. Microvascular surgery, however, appeared to be a technique suitable for more applications. Anatomical research of the blood supply of skin, fascia, muscle and bone identified flaps that could be carried by pedicle vessels. Transfer of these flaps and revascularization by microvascular anastomoses of the pedicle vessels set the stage for free flaps. In a f

BACKGROUND: In laparoscopic surgery, the trocar is often inserted through the umbilicus because of the ease of insertion and inconspicuous postoperative scar formation. However, postoperative complications that require plastic surgical intervention may occur to the umbilicus.
METHODS: We reviewed 14 patients who received plastic surgery for umbilical issues following gynecologic laparoscopic surgery in our department from January 2015 to September 2021.
RESULTS: Most complications requiring umbilical surgery post gynecologic laparoscopic surgery include local infections, scar contractures, e

BACKGROUND: Barbed sutures may expedite dermal approximation and improve tissue support while requiring less time and material than conventional sutures. Several types of barbed sutures are available, each with unique advantages.
OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to determine whether the incidence of complications differed after wound approximation in plastic surgery when various brands of barbed vs nonbarbed traditional sutures were employed.
METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of outcomes in body contouring, free flap, and breast reconstruction. Suture type and closure metho

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review examines bladder inclusion as a reconstructive option in kidney transplantation, particularly when incorporated as part of a pediatric en bloc kidney transplant. With careful patient selection, partial or complete bladder transplant can be performed safely. The technique is relatively straightforward and provides a functionally reliable method of urinary reconstruction and donor ureteral implantation. RECENT FINDINGS: For decades, bladder transplantation was considered technically challenging because of the complex pelvic vascular anatomy, the difficulty of m

The smile is a fundamental facial expression that is important for emotional wellbeing. Long-term facial nerve palsy leads to an inability to smile, which can have profound effects on mental health. Although numerous techniques exist for facial reanimation, evidence on secondary interventions following a failed primary procedure remains scarce. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, aimed to identify techniques for secondary smile restoration. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and MEDLINE identified 41 studies; after independent screening using PICOT-based

Extremity soft tissue sarcoma resection often results in complex defects requiring reconstruction to preserve function and support multidisciplinary treatment. Propeller flaps have emerged as a local alternative to free flaps in selected cases, but their role in sarcoma reconstruction remains incompletely defined. This systematic review aimed to assess the current evidence on the indications, reconstructive outcomes, and oncologic reporting of propeller flaps in extremity sarcoma reconstruction. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library in

» Lateral patellofemoral ligament (LPFL) deficiency is an under-recognized but clinically relevant cause of medial patellar instability, most commonly following excessive lateral retinacular release, though traumatic and atraumatic etiologies have also been described. » Diagnosis remains primarily clinical and is characterized by medial apprehension, pain in early knee flexion, and excessive medial translation, with imaging serving an adjunctive role in excluding osseous contributors and confirming direction-specific instability. » Anatomic LPFL reconstruction restores lateral restraint and ha

Osteoarthritis of the ankle joint affects a younger and often occupational and sport-active patient group than hip and knee arthritis and in the majority of cases has a secondary or posttraumatic origin. Corrective osteotomy is a biological and functionally attractive option for these young and active patients with asymmetric arthritis and correctable malalignment as the native joint is preserved and subsequent arthrosis can be potentially prevented or delayed by arthrodesis. Decisive for the success are consistent 3‑dimensional diagnostics, precise planning, correct interpretation of the indi

Cleft palatoplasty has evolved substantially in recent decades, with the overarching goal of restoring palatal function for speech while preserving maxillary growth.Despite widespread adoption of advanced techniques such as the Furlow double-opposing Z-plasty, long-term outcomes remain variable. Tissue deficiency, dead space, and postoperative scarring can undermine velar mobility and contribute to persistent dysfunction, ultimately compromising long-term velopharyngeal competence and negating the intended benefits of palatal repair. Additionally, maxillary growth restriction can emerge over t

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) exhibits highly variable etiology and clinical course. While some patients recover spontaneously within weeks, others develop persistent sequelae including synkinesis and crocodile tears that substantially impair quality of life. Management strategies differ considerably across clinical centers worldwide, reflecting ongoing uncertainty regarding optimal therapeutic approaches.
METHODS: This narrative review examines PFP pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, surgical interventions, PRF neuromodulation, and rehabilitation technologies (125). A literature se

Mycetoma is an uncommon, chronic, granulomatous infectious condition that affects the skin, dermis and subcutaneous tissues. It is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas. The patient presented to our hospital with a left foot lesion that he first noticed 2 years ago. The lesion consisted of multiple pits discharging black granules and pus. Culture revealed that the grains comprise a mass of fungal hyphae organised within a deeply eosinophilic amorphous matrix (Splendore-Hoeppli material). The patient received multidrug therapy, radical excision of mycetoma and a skin graft. He responded w

Asians often present with a prominent malar complex, resulting in a relatively flat and broad facial contour. While pronounced zygomatic projection is typically considered esthetically undesirable, conventional malar reduction procedures may not always yield satisfactory outcomes. This is largely due to the predominant focus on repositioning the zygomatic body and arch, with insufficient attention to the periorbital segment. Residual periorbital protrusion can contribute to a persistently flat and square midfacial appearance, prompting requests for further surgical intervention. In this study,
