PURPOSE: Evaluation of portoportal collateral vessels and associated biliary abnormalities in patients with cavernous transformation of the portal vein by MRI.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of 34 MRI examinations performed on patients with angiographically or MR-angiographically proven cavernous transformation. The analysis included the pattern of the portoportal collateral circulation and the abnormalities of the biliary system, such as wall thickening, stenosis, dilations and irregularities of the extra-and intrahepatic bile ducts.

Fischer rats infected with Fasciola hepatica showed significant resistance to Schistosoma mansoni challenge, and vice versa, whereas immuniz … l specificity. Microsphere injections in F. hepatica-infected rats demonstrated 'shunting' from the portal system to the systemic circulation. If migrating schistosomula are also 'shunted' in Fasciola-infected rats, this, rather than immunologically specific effector mechanisms, might explain their failure to establish in the portal system.

Endoscopic retrograde intrahepatic cholangiograms were evaluated in 107 patients and correlated with intrahepatic diagnoses determined by liver biopsy. Two cases of cutaneous schistosomiasis due to ectopic ova have recently been seen. Both patients presented with abdominal papular lesions, which were found on biopsy to contain schistosoma ova. To reach these abdominal sites mature worms probably migrate from the portal circulation to the paraumbilical veins, where they anastomose with veins of the caval system.

A prospective blinded comparison of duplex Doppler ultrasound (DDU) and a magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) 2-D time-of-flight technique was performed to assess the hepatic vasculature in 23 adult patients referred for orthotopic liver transplantation.
