Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channels are rapidly deactivated by a membrane-bound phosphatase activity. The efficiency of this regulation suggests CFTR and protein phosphatases may be associated within a regulatory complex. Detailed parasitologic, serologic, clinical and histopathologic studies were conducted in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymai) exposed to varying numbers of cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni. Ehrlich cells exposed to a hypertonic medium for five hours respond by an increased expression of Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransport proteins as estimated from immunoprecipitations using polyclonal anti-cotransporter antibodies. The 3.4-fold increase in cotransport expression is followed by a concomitant 2.6-fold increase in the maximal bumetanide-sensitive K+ influx during regulatory volume increase, indicating a 2.6-fold increase in the number of functional cotransporters in the plasma membrane.

The major envelope antigen of vaccinia virus is an acylated protein of M(r) 37,000 (p37K) which is required for the formation of extracellular enveloped virions (EEV). Despite its important role in the wrapping process, p37K has not been studied in much detail. In order to better characterize this protein we have undertaken a detailed biochemical analysis. Milk growth factors are thought to contribute to postnatal gastrointestinal growth. The roles of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in the neonatal piglet intestine were investigated. The differential diagnosis of the genetic bleeding disorders, hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease, is occasionally confounded by the close molecular relationship of coagulation factor VIII and von Willebrand factor (vWF). This report describes the autosomal inheritance of a hemophilia A phenotype due to a mutation of vWF that results in defective factor VIII binding. The proband was a female patient with low levels of factor VIII activity. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and DNA sequencing were employed to examine exons encoding the putative factor VIII binding domain of vWF.

Autoantibodies to five aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases have been reported, and all have been associated with a syndrome of myositis and interstitial lung disease. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs inhibit the action of prostaglandin H synthase (PGH synthase), and this effect may constitute the basis for therapeutic and idiosyncratic responses to these agents. We found that aspirin treatment of cultured ovine tracheal epithelial cells blocked PGH synthase-catalyzed formation of PG as expected but also caused a dose-dependent increase in 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE) production from arachidonic acid. We have cloned human xeroderma pigmentosum group A complementing (XPAC) cDNA that encodes a "zinc finger" protein with a predicted size of 31 kDa. Recent studies have demonstrated that bullous pemphigoid (BP) antigen, in extracts of cultured human keratinocytes and normal human epidermis, is a 230-kD polypeptide. We studied 41 subjects with a history of farmer's lung disease who had been free of acute episodes for at least one year. Twenty-six were still in daily contact with hay (group 1), and 15 had ceased all antigenic exposure (group 2). While the incidence of dyspnea was similar in both groups, coughing and sputum were more frequent in group 1.
