Toward a better understanding of loneliness in community-dwelling older adults.

The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study was to explore the meaning of loneliness in community-dwelling older adults and to understand their daily practices in coping with loneliness. The sample consisted of 8 women and 4 men. Interviews were conducted with the 12 participants utilizing several tools, including 3 separate interview guides and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Version 3 (Russell, 1996). A critical finding was that many participants experienced loneliness as a result of disrupted meaningful engagement, due to age-related changes, as well as other losses, including death

Longitudinal changes in hearing sensitivity among men: the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study.

Over 35 years (1962-1996), participants of the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study (NAS), a study of healthy aging in men, completed up to eight audiometric assessments. This report describes the age-related hearing trajectories of screened men (n=953) aged 23 to 81 years at enrollment, estimates the typical rate of change per decade in hearing sensitivity, and compares longitudinal and cross-sectional estimates of change in hearing sensitivity. The men were followed 14 years on average. The hearing trajectories, based on a mixed-effects model analytical approach to the data, provide conver

Investigation of potential cognitive tests for use with older adults in audiology clinics.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive declines in working memory and processing speed are hallmarks of aging. Deficits in speech understanding also are seen in aging individuals. A clinical test to determine whether the cognitive aging changes contribute to aging speech understanding difficulties would be helpful for determining rehabilitation strategies in audiology clinics. PURPOSE: To identify a clinical neurocognitive test or battery of tests that could be used in audiology clinics to help explain deficits in speech recognition in some older listeners. RESEARCH DESIGN: A correlational study examining th

Some effects of aging on event-related potentials during a linguistic monitoring task.

Two groups of adults, one young and one elderly, were compared on a dichotic task in which continuous speech was monitored for grammatically and semantically anomalous words. Event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by these anomalies were analyzed in terms of peak amplitude and peak latency of the evoked late-positive component (LPC). Results showed that while LPC peak amplitudes were overall reduced for the group of seniors, LPC peak latencies were similar between both groups of listeners. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that elderly persons can offset declines in memory, p

Cortical cognitive potentials in elderly persons.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in the acoustically evoked cortical cognitive potentials N 200, P 300, and N 3 with age. There were 232 participants, who were 60 years or older, and each was examined using a battery of audiological tests including a questionnaire, otomicroscopy, pure-tone audiometry, and cortical cognitive potentials, measured at Fz using an auditory oddball paradigm. N 200 was elicited in 46.9%, P 300 in 45.1%, and N 3 in 52.2% of the elderly participants. The most significant predictors for presence of cortical responses were the participant's age and he

A longitudinal study of the association between tooth loss and age-related hearing loss.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between hearing acuity and tooth loss in 1156 US veterans taking part in the Veterans Affairs' Normative Aging (NAS) and Dental Longitudinal (DLS) Studies in the Boston, MA, area. The mean age was 48 years (SD = 8.9), 5.3% were edentulous, and 15.4% had < 17 teeth at baseline. Hearing acuity was determined by puretone, air- and bone-conduction audiometry, and speech discrimination tests at triennial examinations over a 20-year follow-up period. Hearing decline was defined as a change from baseline in the

Effects of dietary restriction and antioxidants on presbyacusis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The premise of this study is that the membrane hypothesis of aging, also known as the mitochondrial clock theory of aging, is the basis for presbyacusis. Furthermore, it is proposed that treatment with antioxidants or dietary restriction can attenuate age-related hearing loss. Many studies have demonstrated a reduction in blood flow to specific tissues, including the cochlea, with aging. Hypoperfusion leads to the formation of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROM). ROM are highly toxic molecules that directly affect tissues including inner ear structures. In addition, ROM ca

Age-related hearing impairment and B vitamin status.

The aim of this study was to examine, in elderly subjects, a possible association between age-related hearing impairment and vitamin B12 or folic acid status. Ninety-one consecutive subjects with pure age-related hearing impairment, 35 males and 56 females, with a median age of 78 years, range 67-88 years, were included in the investigation. All subjects underwent a thorough evaluation, including pure-tone, speech and impedance audiometry. Blood samples were drawn for determination of B12, folic acid and homocysteine and analysed by routine laboratory measurements. No significant differences i

The time course and magnitude of perceptual acclimatization to frequency responses: evidence from monaural fitting of hearing aids.

At high presentation levels, normally aided ears yield better performance for speech identification than normally unaided ears, while at low presentation levels the converse is true [S. Gatehouse, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 86, 2103-2106 (1989)]. To explain this process further, the speech identification abilities of four subjects with bilateral symmetric sensorineural hearing impairment were investigated following provision of a single hearing aid. Results showed significant increases in the benefit from amplifying speech in the aided ear, but not in the control ear. In addition, a headphone simulat

The relationship of continuous (C) and interrupted (I) tones at threshold and most comfortable loudness (MCL) in hearing-impaired ears.

Differences in the Bekesy tracking levels of continuous (C) and interrupted (I) tones at both threshold and most comfortable loudness (MCL) were determined in a large clinical sample of persons with hearing loss. Results indicate small but significant C-I differences not only at the two levels separately but also in the tracking of C and I tones at threshold relative to MCL, regardless of frequency or hearing loss severity. Such results may have implications for both diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology.

Masking level differences encountered in clinical populations.

Methods for measuring masking level differences (MLDs) at 500 Hz and for spondees were used with 290 subjects: 50 persons with normal hearing and 240 patients with various diseases. Of particular interest was whether techniques currently in clinical use could be used with ease, dispatch, and profit in determining MLD size. The methods selected, which were variations of Békésy audiometry and speech reception threshold procedures, proved clinically feasible. Results revealed differences in behavior from one group of subjects to another. Although MLDs were not affected by cortical lesions, they w

Transcriptomics Implicates the G3BP1-SG Axis in Cochlear Hair-Cell Pyroptosis During Age-Related Hearing Loss.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a degenerative change in the auditory system, but its underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, using RNA sequencing technology, we analysed the expression profiles of mRNAs in the cochlear tissues of ARHL-susceptible C57BL/6J (C57) mice and relatively resistant CBA/CaJ (CBA) mice. We found that the mRNA related to stress granules (SGs) was significantly increased in the cochlear tissues of ARHL mice. Combined with current research on the pyroptosis of cochlear hair cells, we constructed an aging model of House Ear Institute-Organ of Corti 1 (HEI-O

Smoking history and the rate of hearing decline in aging: Results from a longitudinal cohort study.

Hearing loss is a common and impactful condition among aging adults. Improved understanding of modifiable risk factors for hearing loss, including smoking, could promote hearing loss prevention. The purpose of this longitudinal study was to determine the association of smoking with the rate of age-related hearing decline across the frequency range. Participants were from the Medical University of South Carolina Longitudinal Cohort Study of Age-related Hearing Loss. Smoking pack years were calculated (at baseline) as the number of self-reported packs smoked per day multiplied by years smoked, a

Early signs of auditory aging: Hearing declines faster in individuals with extended high frequency hearing loss.

Hearing loss, particularly age-related hearing loss, significantly impacts health and quality of life worldwide. While much of the research has focused on older adults, the early stages of hearing decline remain relatively unexplored. Longitudinal studies examining hearing changes across the adult lifespan, especially at extended high frequencies (EHFs), are scarce. This prospective longitudinal study aimed to explore the rate of hearing threshold shift in young adults with clinically normal audiograms and to assess whether EHF hearing loss could predict future hearing decline in the standard

Amino acid and acetylcholine chemistry in the central auditory system of young, middle-aged and old rats.

Older adults generally experience difficulties with hearing. Age-related changes in the chemistry of central auditory regions, especially the chemistry underlying synaptic transmission between neurons, may be of particular relevance for hearing changes. In this study, we used quantitative microchemical methods to map concentrations of amino acids, including the major neurotransmitters of the brain, in all the major central auditory structures of young (6 months), middle-aged (22 months), and old (33 months old) Fischer 344 x Brown Norway rats. In addition, some amino acid measurements were mad

Is there an age limit for cochlear implantation?

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the quality of life following cochlear implantation in elderly postlingually deaf adults. METHODS: Data were studied concerning demographics and audiometric evaluation in postlingually deaf adults at least 60 years of age who underwent cochlear implantation in 3 institutions. The Glasgow Benefit Inventory was used to quantify the quality of life. The patients were divided into 2 groups (those less than 70 years of age and those at least 70 years of age), and the results were also compared to those of younger adult cochlear implant recipients (less than 60 years of age

The recovery from AP adaptation in sensorineural hearing loss.

CONCLUSIONS: An abnormally slower action potential (AP) recovery from adaptation (decreased recovery, dR) was characteristically detected in many ears with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) but not Meniere's disease and idiopathic sudden SNHL. We assumed that this abnormal AP recovery from adaptation was attributed to an imbalance in the distributions of auditory neurons with high and low spontaneous firing rates. The significant difference of initial hearing level between dR and normal AP recovery groups (nR) was assumed to partially result from AP recovery being determined by the inner hair

Behavioral hearing thresholds between 0.125 and 20 kHz using depth-compensated ear simulator calibration.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to obtain behavioral hearing thresholds for frequencies between 0.125 and 20 kHz from a large population between 10 and 65 yr old using a clinically feasible calibration method expected to compensate well for variations in the distance between the eardrum and an insert-type sound source. Previous reports of hearing thresholds in the extended high frequencies (>8 kHz) have either used calibration techniques known to be inaccurate or specialized equipment not suitable for clinical use. DESIGN: Hearing thresholds were measured from 352 human subjects bet

Red cell basic ferritin concentration in sensorineural hearing loss.

Red cell basic ferritin (RCBF) was measured in 62 healthy subjects with normal hearing and 224 patients with different kinds of sensorineural hearing loss, compared with serum ferritin, haemoglobin, serum iron and circadian variation in the serum iron levels. The results showed that the RCBF concentrations in most kinds of sensorineural hearing loss were significantly lower than those in normal hearing status. It is conceivable that the RCBF assay can be used to evaluate the adequacy of iron stores that are useful in times of urgent iron needs and to diagnose relative iron deficiency in those
