Securitizing carceral health: a realist review of Canada's prison needle exchange program.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, in response to a lawsuit and years of civil society advocacy for prison-based syringe distribution due to elevated rates of injection drug use, HIV, and hepatitis C virus among incarcerated people, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) developed a Prison Needle Exchange Program (PNEP). Implementation of the PNEP has been slow and has faced significant critiques and challenges. As of early 2025, the PNEP is only available at eleven of forty-three federal prisons in Canada. Employing realist review methodology, an iterative process for synthesizing evidence concerning com…

Beyond the Lines: Exploration of Health Literacy Among Inmates in a European Prison in Africa.

Migration status, belonging to ethnic or racial minorities, and low educational and socioeconomic levels are predisposing factors for low health literacy, which can be further exacerbated by incarceration. This study aimed to explore the health literacy levels of incarcerated individuals in a European enclave on the African continent and compare these findings with the Spanish population assessed in the European Health Literacy Survey. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sampling method between August and September 2023. Participants completed the short form of the Spanis

Reproductive and maternal child health experiences of Indigenous women in prison: A scoping review.

In the context of the over-representation of women who are Indigenous in prisons and historical and structural barriers to health, we undertook a scoping review to understand research regarding the reproductive and maternal health experiences of Indigenous women in prison in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the USA. We searched online databases in May 2022 since inception, as well as Google and governmental websites between December 2022 and March 2023. We identified 8 eligible articles. Most studies (5) were conducted in Australia, while 2 were conducted in Canada and 1 in the USA. There w…

Co-designing a novel intervention for prison staff affected by moral injury: a protocol.

Background: Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) can contribute towards serious mental disorders. Prisons are uniquely challenging environments where staff must fulfil competing roles of security, care, and rehabilitation. Currently no manualised intervention for moral injury-related distress exists for prison staff. Here we describe the 'Co-designing a program for Addressing staff wellbeing and Reducing moral injury Experiences' (CARE) study protocol, which aims to co-develop an intervention to prevent and respond to moral injury-related ill health. Methods: Data will be co…

Interoceptive sensibility and alcohol craving in Polish prisoners: the role of alexithymia and emotional dysregulation.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol craving, characterized by a strong desire or compulsion to consume alcohol, is a prominent symptom of substance dependence syndrome. Research indicates that alcohol craving is a significant factor leading to the termination of abstinence. The mechanisms underlying the activation of alcohol craving remain not fully understood. The urge to reach for alcohol may be stimulated by emotions, memories, thoughts, or bodily sensations, as well as external factors. It has been postulated that individuals with high levels of interoceptive sensibility tend to exhibit a high degree of

RISE-Vac-Co-production of Vaccine Education Materials with Persons Living in Prison.

Perceptions of incarcerated people: prison conditions, public health, and justice in the United States.

Understanding and improving the quality of primary care for people in prison: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: People in prison are generally in poorer health than their peers in the community, often living with chronic illness and multimorbidity. Healthcare research in prisons has largely focused on specific problems, such as substance use; less attention has been paid to conditions routinely managed in primary care, such as diabetes or hypertension. It is important to understand how primary care in prisons is currently delivered in the United Kingdom and how it can be improved, in order to reduce health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: To understand the quality of primary care in prison, includi…
