The Effect of Intramolecular Proton Transfer on the Mechanism of NO Reduction to N2O by a Copper Complex: A DFT Study.

DFT calculations were performed to explore the mechanism underlying the reduction of NO to N2O by a CuI complex. A nitrosyl complex reacts with another NO molecule and the CuI complex, leading to the formation of a dicopper-hyponitrite complex (Cu2N2O2). The first steps follow a common pathway until the formation of the intermediate [CuII-N2O2]+, after which the reaction pathway diverges into three Cu2N2O2 species: κ2-N,N', κ2-O,O', and κ3-N,O,O'. These species yield different products along their respective reaction pathways. In the case of the κ2-N,N' and κ3-N,O,O' species, the subsequent st

The sodium-proton exchangers sNHE and NHE1 control plasma membrane hyperpolarization in mouse sperm.

Sperm capacitation is a complex process that takes place in the female reproductive tract and empowers mammalian sperm with the competence to fertilize an egg. It consists of an intricate cascade of events that can be mimicked in vitro through incubation in a medium containing essential components, such as bicarbonate, albumin, Ca2+, and energy substrates, among others. Genetic and pharmacological studies have underscored the unique significance of the K+ channel SLO3 in membrane potential hyperpolarization, as evidenced by the infertility of mice lacking its expression. Notably, two key molec

Proton Exchange Membranes from Sulfonated Lignin Nanocomposites for Redox Flow Battery Applications.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are increasingly being considered for a wide range of energy storage applications, and such devices rely on proton exchange membranes (PEMs) to function. PEMs are high-cost, petroleum-derived polymers that often possess limited durability, variable electrochemical performance, and are linked to discharge of perfluorinated compounds. Alternative PEMs that utilize biobased materials, including lignin and sulfonated lignin (SL), low-cost byproducts of the wood pulping process, have struggled to balance electrochemical performance with dimensional stability. The role of proton excreted by Advenella kashmirensis DF12 during ammonium assimilation in phosphate solubilization.

Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can solubilize soil fixed phosphorus (P) to plant available forms. In previous studies, the mechanisms of inorganic phosphate solubilization by PSB mostly focused on the acidolysis of organic acids. Here we screened a highly efficient PSB, Advenella kashmirensis DF12, with the maximum P solubilization of 590 mg L- 1 at 6 days. In addition to its P solubilizing ability, DF12 also showed a tolerance to pH from 5 to 10 and a nitrogen fixation potential. The multiple functions of DF12 and its wide adaptability to various environmental conditions make it a prom

Potassium-Competitive Acid Blockers and Proton Pump Inhibitors: The Dynamic Duo of Acid Blockers.

The management of acid-based disorders was transformed in the 1980s with the advent of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), which target the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (proton pump) of the parietal cell. Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs), a newer class of medications, act at the same proton pump through a novel mechanism resulting in profound and sustained acid suppression. Although trials in Asian populations over the past decades have highlighted the potential benefit of P-CABs, clinical trials in Western populations have been initiated more recently. These trials evalu

An extended substrate spectrum of the proton organic cation antiporter and relation to other cation transporters.

Most central nervous system (CNS) active drugs are organic cations, which need carrier proteins for efficient transfer through the blood-brain barrier (BBB). A genetically still unidentified proton organic cation (H+/OC) antiporter is found in several tissues, including endothelial cells of the BBB. We characterized the substrate spectrum of the H+/OC antiporter and the overlap in substrate spectrum with OCTN1, OCTN2 or OCT3 by screening 87 potential substrates for transport activity. Based on high antiport rates, 45 of the tested substances were substrates of the H+/OC antiporter. They includ

Spot scanning proton therapy for unresectable bulky retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase risk for mental and physical health disorders in adulthood, particularly in individuals from sexual and ethnic minority groups. The effects of ACEs on health may be mediated by the immune system. The exact mechanisms by which an environmental exposure, such as childhood adversity, can affect the immune system are still unknown. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether early adversity is associated with significant changes in the expression of a predefined set of immune-related genes, known as the conserved transcriptional

Reconstruction of thermoacoustic emission sources induced by proton irradiation using numerical time reversal.

Objective.Mapping of dose delivery in proton beam therapy can potentially be performed by analyzing thermoacoustic emissions measured by ultrasound arrays. Here, a method is derived and demonstrated for spatial mapping of thermoacoustic sources using numerical time reversal, simulating re-transmission of measured emissions into the medium.Approach.Spatial distributions of thermoacoustic emission sources are shown to be approximated by the analytic-signal form of the time-reversed acoustic field, evaluated at the time of the initial proton pulse. Given calibration of the array sensitivity and k

Spectroscopic MRI-Guided Proton Therapy in Non-Enhancing Pediatric High-Grade Glioma.

Radiation therapy (RT) is a critical part of definitive therapy for pediatric high-grade glioma (pHGG). RT is designed to treat residual tumor defined on conventional MRI (cMRI), though pHGG lesions may be ill-characterized on standard imaging. Spectroscopic MRI (sMRI) measures endogenous metabolite concentrations in the brain, and Choline (Cho)/N-acetylaspartate (NAA) ratio is a highly sensitive biomarker for metabolically active tumor. We provide a preliminary report of our study introducing a novel treatment approach of whole brain sMRI-guided proton therapy for pHGG. An observational cohor

ATP12A Proton Pump as an Emerging Therapeutic Target in Cystic Fibrosis and Other Respiratory Diseases.

ATP12A encodes the catalytic subunit of the non-gastric proton pump, which is expressed in many epithelial tissues and mediates the secretion of protons in exchange for potassium ions. In the airways, ATP12A-dependent proton secretion contributes to complex mechanisms regulating the composition and properties of the fluid and mucus lining the respiratory epithelia, which are essential to maintain the airway host defense and the respiratory health. Increased expression and activity of ATP12A in combination with the loss of other balancing activities, such as the bicarbonate secretion mediated b…
