Postpartum anemia and maternal wellbeing: A cohort analysis of the WOMAN-2 trial.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the association between postpartum anemia and maternal wellbeing in women who gave birth with anemia. METHODS: We conducted a cohort analysis using secondary data from the WOMAN-2 trial. Between August 2019 and September 2023, women with moderate or severe anemia who were giving birth vaginally were recruited from hospitals in Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania, and Zambia. Our exposure was postpartum anemia (hemoglobin concentration <70, 70-99, or ≥100 g/L: severe, mild/moderate, and no postpartum anemia, respectively). Our primary outcome was physical capacity (6-min walk te

Management of postpartum hypertension.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hypertensive disorders during the postpartum period are a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. The most recent statistics suggest that 16% of pregnancies are complicated by hypertension, and that number is increasing. The majority of complications occur in the postpartum period, and new publications have revolutionized the way we manage postpartum hypertension. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have shown that tight blood pressure (BP) control in the postpartum period may decrease adverse maternal outcomes. Several studies have demonstrated that nifedipine l

Risk factors and interaction analysis of severe diastasis recti abdominis within 6 months postpartum.

OBJECTIVES: Severe diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) in the postpartum period may lead to long‑term functional impairment in women. However, the independent effects and interactions of perinatal risk factors during the early postpartum recovery window have not been fully elucidated. This study aims to analyze the risk factors and interaction effects associated with severe postpartum DRA and to identify characteristics of high‑risk populations. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included postpartum women who underwent postpartum rehabilitation treatment at Hengyang Maternal and Child Healt

Development and Validation of Machine Learning Models for Risk Prediction of Postpartum Stress Urinary Incontinence: A Prospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to develop a postpartum stress urinary incontinence (PPSUI) risk prediction model based on an updated definition of PPSUI, using machine learning algorithms. The goal is to identify the best model for early clinical screening to improve screening accuracy and optimize clinical management strategies. METHODS: This prospective study collected data from 1208 postpartum women, with the dataset randomly divided into training and testing sets (8:2). Five machine learning algorithms-logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, support vector machi

Clinical features and prognosis of postpartum lower extremity nerve injury: A four-year single-center experience in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum lower extremity nerve injury (LENI) is a recognized but often underdiagnosed complication of childbirth, presenting with symptoms ranging from transient sensory disturbances to persistent motor deficits. Although the reported incidence is low, research on the topic remains limited, and no studies to date have examined this phenomenon in the Israeli population. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 531 neurological consultations from the maternity ward at Shamir Medical Center between 2019 and 2022. Cases of suspected LENI - postpartum leg weakness, paresthesi

Efficacy of a self-heating Chinese medicine hot pack for postpartum urinary retention.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Postpartum urinary retention (PUR) is a frequent complication following epidural anesthesia in primiparous women, elevating the risk of urinary tract infections and long-term bladder dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a self-heating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hot pack in preventing PUR and enhancing postpartum maternal comfort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty primigravid women receiving epidural anesthesia were randomly assigned to a control group receiving standard postpartum care, or a test group receiving standard care plus applicatio

Pregnancy and delivery after laparoscopic mesh repair for postpartum diastasis recti abdominis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) refers to the separation of the 2 rectus abdominis muscles along the linea alba. It is a common condition during pregnancy and the puerperium that can cause musculoskeletal pain, urogynecologic symptoms, and body image concerns. However, surgery for this condition is controversial and there is no consensus on the indications for surgery. This case report aims to document a successful pregnancy and vaginal delivery following laparoscopic mesh repair, highlighting the potential safety and functional implications of surgical intervention in reproductive-

Peripartum cardiomyopathy delivery hospitalization and postpartum readmission trends, risk factors, and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk for peripartum cardiomyopathy during delivery and postpartum hospitalizations, and analyze associated trends, risk factors, and clinical outcomes. METHODS: The 2010-2020 Nationwide Readmissions Database was used for this retrospective cohort study. Delivery hospitalizations along with postpartum readmissions occurring within five months of delivery discharge were analyzed. Risk factors associated with peripartum cardiomyopathy were analyzed with unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models with odds ratios as measures of effect. Risk for severe adverse outcom
