Assessment of acute skin reactions in hypofractionated chest wall irradiation on a telecobalt machine for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant chest wall radiation therapy for postmastectomy breast cancer patients is highly effective in reducing the risk of locoregional recurrence. Hypofractionated regimen is increasingly being adopted in adjuvant radiotherapy. One of the reasons for its slow adoption is the concern that a hypofractionated regimen can lead to higher side effects, such as radiation-induced dermatitis. Even while modern techniques like intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) have made great strides in protecting healthy tissues, the use of two-di

Murine Model of Radiation Dermatitis with Experimental Wound and Effects of Genistein.

Cutaneous Radiation Injuries (CRIs) and wounds within an area of radiation exposure (combined injury, CI) are a significant concern for nuclear accidents and radiation combat/terrorist events. CRIs and CI present unique clinical challenges, and effective countermeasures are urgently needed. Here we describe a murine model of CRI and CI in C57BL/6 mice using 16.9 Gy thoracic X-ray irradiation (5.3 Gy/min, 160 kV) ± experimental wound administered immediately. Wound repair and radiation-induced dermatitis were assessed after irradiation. Our previous studies showed that genistein (200 mg/kg, s.c

Characterization of Cutaneous Radiation Syndrome in a Mouse Model Using [ 18 F]F- Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography.

Ionizing radiation on the skin has the potential to cause various sequelae affecting quality of life and even leading to death due to multi-system failure. The development of radiation dermatitis is attributed to oxidative damage to the skin's basal layer and alterations in immune response, leading to inflammation. Past studies have shown that [ 18 F]F-2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography ([ 18 F]F-FDG PET/CT) can be used effectively for the detection of inflammatory activity, especially in conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, psoriasis, and early ather

Rice Bran Extract Alleviates Inflammation and Promotes Wound Healing in Radiation Dermatitis.

Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of radiotherapy, affecting up to 95% of cancer patients receiving radiation therapy and often leading to skin damage, inflammation, and ulceration. The pathogenesis of radiation dermatitis involves complex mechanisms, such as the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and sustained inflammatory responses. Current treatments, including topical steroids, moisturisers, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), often provide limited efficacy, primarily addressing symptoms rather than the underlying pathophysiological processes. In this st

Assessment of radiation dermatitis in locally advanced head and neck cancer patients treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy using LENT-SOMA scale: hematological indicators-based nomogram model.

BACKGROUND: Due to high sensitivity of the skin on the head and neck to radiation, patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are more susceptible to developing radiation dermatitis (RD). It is important to predict the severity of RD in patients with HNC after radiotherapy. The aim of this research is to develop a nomogram model to predict the RD with a subjective and objective combined scale. METHODS: During the period from May 24, 2020 to December 13, 2023, HNC patients with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) combined concurrent chemotherapy were recruited. The main outcomes considered we

An innovative targeted therapy for fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis.

Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis (FICRD) is a complication of fluoroscopy-guided intervention. Unlike acute radiation dermatitis, FICRD is different as delayed onset and usually appears without preexisting acute dermatitis. Unfortunately, the chronic and progressive pathology of FICRD makes it difficult to treat, and some patients need to receive wide excision and reconstruction surgery. Due to lack of standard treatment, investigating underlying mechanism is needed in order to develop an effective therapy. Herein, the Hippo pathway is specifically identified using an RNA-seq a

Efficacy of different plant extracts in the prevention of radiation dermatitis in radiotherapy patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A protocol for a Bayesian network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis is a common complication in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) when treated with radiotherapy. Plant extracts have good effects on the prevention of radiation dermatitis in patients with NPC when treated with radiotherapy. However, there is insufficient comparison among the currently used plant extracts. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of different plant extracts in the prevention of radiation dermatitis in patients with NPC by Bayesian network meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched Chinese and English databases to colle

Ultraviolet Radiations: Skin Defense-Damage Mechanism.

UV-radiations are the invisible part of light spectra having a wavelength between visible rays and X-rays. Based on wavelength, UV rays are subdivided into UV-A (320-400 nm), UV-B (280-320 nm) and UV-C (200-280 nm). Ultraviolet rays can have both harmful and beneficial effects. UV-C has the property of ionization thus acting as a strong mutagen, which can cause immune-mediated disease and cancer in adverse cases. Numbers of genetic factors have been identified in human involved in inducing skin cancer from UV-radiations. Certain heredity diseases have been found susceptible to UV-induced skin

Docetaxel-induced radiation recall dermatitis : A case report and literature review.

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) refers to an acute inflammatory skin reaction appearing on a previously irradiated area following the systemic administration of a reaction-triggering agent. Despite various hypotheses, the pathomechanism of RRD appears complex and is still not fully understood. In addition, no clinical guidelines exist concerning whether drug treatment should be continued upon manifestation of an associated radiation recall phenomenon. We present the case of a patient with docetaxel-induced RRD, which was successfully treated with topical steroids and systemic antihistamines;

Prospective phase I study on testicular castration induced by radiation treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Surgery and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analogs are standard androgen deprivation treatments (ADT) for patients with advanced prostate cancer. We performed a phase I study to explore if irradiation to the testes could be used as an alternative to ADT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients had advanced prostate cancer with normal testosterone levels before treatment and indication for long term castration. Treatment started with one LHRH analog injection (to induce a fast drop of testosterone) followed by irradiation to the whole scrotum. Two fractionation regimens

Retrospective study of radiotherapy-induced skin reactions in breast cancer patients: reduced incidence of moist desquamation with a hydroactive colloid gel versus dexpanthenol.

PURPOSE: Dermatitis is a very frequent and distressing side effect of radiation therapy that may necessitate a treatment interruption when evolving towards more severe forms such as moist desquamation (MD). The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of two topical agents, a dexpanthenol cream vs a hydroactive colloid gel combining absorbing and moisturising properties, in preventing MD in breast cancer patients. METHODS: This retrospective study compared two successive groups of breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy after breast-sparing surgery between 2008 and 2012. A group o

Racial variations in radiation-induced skin toxicity severity: data from a prospective cohort receiving postmastectomy radiation.

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced skin toxicity is one of the most symptomatic side effects of postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT). We sought to determine whether the severity of acute skin toxicity was greater in black patients in a prospective cohort receiving PMRT and to identify other predictors of more severe skin toxicity. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We evaluated the first 110 patients in an ongoing prospective study assessing radiation-induced skin toxicity in patients receiving PMRT. We recorded patient demographics, body mass index (BMI), and disease and treatment characteristics. Logistic r

[Cutaneous damage after acute exposure to ionizing radiation: decisive for the prognosis of radiation accident victims].

The cutaneous radiation syndrome includes all deterministic effects on the skin and visible parts of the mucosa from ionizing radiation. The Intensity and duration of radiation-induced skin symptoms depend on the kind and quality of ionizing radiation. The aim of this study was the investigation of the importance of the time of the development of radiation induced-skin effects on the prognosis of radiation accident victims. Clinical data about radiation accident victims from the database SEARCH were used. 211 cases with good documentation regarding radiation-induced skin effects were selected.

Chronic scalp ulceration as a late complication of fluoroscopically guided cerebral aneurysm embolization.

Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis resulting from prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation during interventional procedures has been documented in the medical literature. However, this condition often requires a high clinical suspicion in order to establish a correct diagnosis. In this report, the development of deep scalp ulceration with bone exposure following the endovascular coiling of an anterior communicating artery aneurysm 8 years before is described. A skin biopsy specimen demonstrated changes consistent with chronic radiation dermatitis and ruled out malignancy. This ca
