Twenty patients with documented reflex sympathetic dystrophy were treated with a series of regional intravenous guanethidine blocks. The mean delay between the first clinical symptoms and the start of guanethidine blocks was 3.6 months. The overall result was good in 11 patients, moderate in two patients and poor in seven patients. Poor results are due mainly to incorrect diagnosis and to application either too late in the third phase or too early in the first phase when only signs of increased blood flow are part of the symptomatology. The incidence and possible mechanism of early spontaneous termination of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia was studied in 20 consecutive patients. Episodes of induced tachycardia that terminated spontaneously within the 1st minute after initiation were included. The growth function of the acoustic stapedius reflex was measured in subjects with normal hearing and sensorineural hearing loss of cochlear origin. The effects of age and magnitude of hearing loss were controlled. Activating stimuli were 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz tones and broadband noise. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the accuracy of a previously described method for predicting hearing loss, using a comparison of acoustic reflex thresholds for pure tones and broad-band noise, would occur in a small sample under clinical test conditions. Intracoronary injection of veratrum alkaloids is known to stimulate ventricular receptors with vagal afferents resulting in bradycardia and … om 130 mmHg before to 111 mmHg after injection. Renal blood flow did not change significantly. This reflex suppression of renin release by excitation of ventricular receptors was abolished by vagotomy. An oscilloscopic analysis of several features of the stapedius muscle reflex was carried out in a group of normal subjects and in patients affected by dysfunction at the brain stem level due to a pathologic lesion or temporary reduction by small doses of barbiturates. Under these conditions, the increased latency and reduced amplitude of the reflex, but particularly the reduced velocity and, not infrequently, the step-like pattern of the tracings, are considered to be data of considerable value in disorders of the brain stem structues.
