Ureteral Ligation During Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy.

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) is the surgical standard of care for patients with localized prostate cancer. Although uncommon, the procedure involves a potential risk of injury to adjacent anatomical structures. We report on a unique case of iatrogenic ureteral injury during RALP that required subsequent robotic-assisted laparoscopic ureteral reimplantation for definitive repair. A 57-year-old male underwent RALP using the Da Vinci Xi system (Intuitive Surgical, Sunnyvale, CA). The procedure was unremarkable and a 20 French Foley catheter was placed with plans for removal

A case of retrocaval ureter with robot-assisted ureteral reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Retrocaval ureter is a rare congenital anomaly that causes ureteral obstruction. Because of the rarity of retrocaval ureter, only a few cases of open, laparoscopic, or robot-assisted surgery have been reported. We herein report a case of retrocaval ureter that was successfully reconstructed with robot-assisted surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old woman was incidentally diagnosed with right hydronephrosis on ultrasonography. Computed tomography revealed retrocaval ureter, and the right hydronephrosis was attributed to the retrocaval ureter. The patient underwent robot-assist

Robot-assisted laparoscopic adrenalectomy: Extended application in children.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery for paediatric adrenal tumours has evolved, but robot-assisted laparoscopic adrenalectomy (RALA) in children remains poorly studied. The current prospective study aims to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of RALA in treating children with adrenal tumours. METHODS: A prospective institutional analysis of children presenting with neuroblastic and endocrine tumours treated with RALA was undertaken over a six year-period. For each child, clinical parameters were collected relating to diagnosis, surgery and outcomes. RESULTS: A total 50 RALA were performed

Robotic and Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy for Pheochromocytoma: An International Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Robotic adrenalectomy (RA) has attracted interest as an alternative to laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) for patients with pheochromocytoma, although its beneficial effects are uncertain. Our aim was to compare RA and LA outcomes for these patients. METHODS: Data for patients who underwent RA or LA for pheochromocytoma in 46 international centers between 2012 and 2022 were reviewed. We analyzed baseline characteristics and postoperative complications at discharge, 90 d, and 1 yr. We conducted propensity score matching (PSM; 1:1 ratio) and multivariable analyses to eval

Robotic-Assisted Cholecystoduodenal Fistula and Bile Leak Repair.

Cholelithiasis and its complications are among the most prevalent and costly medical conditions in the United States. Chronic gallbladder disease can progress into more complicated conditions, such as a cholecystoenteric fistula and, more specifically, a cholecystoduodenal fistula (CDF). Repair of these fistulas is complex and usually performed with an open approach. However, if discovered pre-operatively, they can be referred to a hepatobiliary surgery center, where surgeons have specialized training to do such procedures laparoscopically. Here, we present a case of a 57-year-old female with

Feasibility of robotic posterior fossa skull base surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Despite its potential advantages, robotic surgery has yet to be applied to skull base procedures. Complex anatomy and restricted access have limited the development of robotic skull base surgery. The authors' aim was to conduct a feasibility study of robotic surgery for posterior fossa skull base lesions. METHODS: Six silicone-injected postmortem human heads were prepared for the robotic surgery. Because there was no drilling tool with the robot, specimens were dissected in advance using an endoscope and microscope. The following approaches were investigated: 1) supracerebellar-inf

[Voluntary and Adaptive Control Strategy for Ankle Rehabilitation Robot].

The control strategy of rehabilitation robots should not only adapt to patients with different levels of motor function but also encourage patients to participate voluntarily in rehabilitation training. However, existing control strategies usually consider only one of these aspects. This study proposes a voluntary and adaptive control strategy that solves both questions. Firstly, the controller switched to the corresponding working modes (including challenge, free, assistant, and robot-dominant modes) based on the trajectory tracking error of human-robot cooperative movement. To encourage pati

A phased array ultrasound system with a robotic arm for neuromodulation.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonic neuromodulation (UNMOD) provides a non-invasive brain stimulation. However, the high-resolution region-specificity of UNMOD with a single element transducer combined with a mechanical positioning system could have limits due to the intrinsic positioning error from mechanical systems. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: A phased array system could lead to highly selective neuromodulation with electronic control. METHODS: A specialized phased-array system with a robotic arm is implemented for a rhesus monkey model. Various primary motor cortex areas related to tail, hand, and mouth we

Robotic-assisted percutaneous pelvis fixation: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: It may be possible to extend the use of the robotic arm to pelvic and acetabular surgery leading to safe, repeatable screw placement, and less radiation exposure for patients, surgeons and OR staff. ABSTRACT: In this case, a novel, robotic-assisted technique was used to place a sacroiliac screw in a patient with unstable injuries of the pelvic ring. Intraoperative and postoperative fluoroscopic, radiographic, and CT imaging demonstrated a safely positioned 6.5 mm cannulated screw without unplanned cortical violation or impingement on neurovascular structures. Robot-assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy After SpaceOAR Placement.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prostate cancer are offered a wide range of treatments from radiation therapy to chemotherapy to surgery. When giving radiation therapy, SpaceOAR hydrogel has been part of the standard treatment for the last decade to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure to the rectum. In rare cases, SpaceOAR may be placed but the patient cannot go through with radiation. The hydrogel ideally persists in the body for 3months then gets absorbed at 6months. OBJECTIVES: In this video presentation, we discuss our unique surgical case involving robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy i

Robotic enucleation & uncinectomy of complex lesions of the proximal pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Malignant tumours within the proximal pancreas traditionally require pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for cure. For smaller lesions with borderline malignant potential the risk/benefit of PD becomes difficult to justify. Robotic approaches to these lesions allow for parenchymal preserving resection with reduced complication profile without oncological compromise. METHODS: A review of a single surgeons prospectively collated database across two institutions of consecutive robotic enucleations or parenchyma preserving resections of the proximal pancreas was performed between July 2018 a

Single port (SP) robotic pyeloplasty in a pediatric patient.

We began using the da Vinci single port (SP) robot for pediatric urologic surgeries at our institution due to limited access to the multiport robot. Availability of this technology has allowed us to schedule cases in a timelier fashion and increase access to minimally invasive urologic surgery for children in our area. Here, we report our technique for transperitoneal SP robotic pyeloplasty in the case of a 7 year-old boy with left ureteropelvic junction obstruction. Our technique was refined over a series of 10 patients under the age of 18. Highlights of the SP RALP technique include one 3 cm

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy in the diagnosis of peripheral pulmonary lesions.

More peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs) are detected by low-dose helical computed tomography (CT) either incidentally or via dedicated lung cancer screening programs. Thus, using methods for safe and accurate diagnosis of these lesions has become increasingly important. Transthoracic needle aspiration (TTNA) and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB) are routinely performed during the diagnostic workup for PPLs. However, TTNA often carries the risk of pneumothorax, uncontrollable airway hemorrhage, and does not allow mediastinal staging in one procedure. In contrast, traditional TBLB often has a p

Water Skating Miniature Robot Propelled by Acoustic Bubbles.

This paper presents a miniature robot designed for monitoring its surroundings and exploring small and complex environments by skating on the surface of water. The robot is mainly made of extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS) and Teflon tubes and is propelled by acoustic bubble-induced microstreaming flows generated by gaseous bubbles trapped in the Teflon tubes. The robot's linear motion, velocity, and rotational motion are tested and measured at different frequencies and voltages. The results show that the propulsion velocity is proportional to the applied voltage but highly depends on the a
