An abnormality of the bone marrow associated with vitamin E deficiency in sheep.

1. Sheep fed on a maintenance ration of wheaten-hay chaff or of wheaten-hay chaff-lucerne-hay chaff (I : I, W/W) became deficient or incipiently deficient in vitamin E. 2. Degenerative changes were observed in bone marrow and muscle, and liver function was imparied in some animals. These abnormalities were not influenced by the vitamin B12 status of the animals or by a shortage of cobalt in the rumen. 3. Plasma ascorbic acid levels may not have been optimum, and folic may not have been fully utilized by some sheep. 4. Liver function responded faily rapidly to alpha-tocopheryl acetate, but skel…

The effect of mixed grazing of sheep and cattle on worm burdens in lambs.

Lambs from ewes grazed without cattle at 4.9, 7.4 and 9.9 ewes and lambs per hectare and from ewes run with steers at an equivalent median stocking rate at four ratios in which sheep comprised 30%, 40%, 50% and 70% of the animal equivalents were killed and examined for worms. When sheep grazed alone, there was no significant increase in the number of worm species normally found in sheep, namely Ostertagia circumcincta and Nematodirus spathiger, with an increase in stocking rate. When sheep grazed with cattle, there was a decrease in the number of worm species normally found in sheep but an inc…

Carcinoma of the small intestine of sheep in Iceland. A pathological and epizootiological study.

This paper deals with an unusually high incidence, i.e. 0.97 % of carcinoma of the small intestine found in Icelandic sheep. The tumours were situated in the jejunum and upper ileum. The macroscopic and microscopic pathology is described and compared with carcinoma of the small intestine of domestic animals and humans. Aetiological factors are discussed and the possibility of exposure to carcinogenic substances, especially nitrosamines in food concentrates, is suggested. Finally these findings are discussed in relation to current ideas on carcinogenesis in the intestines.
