The incidence of neurologic injury after shoulder arthroplasty has been reported to be 1% to 4%. However, the true incidence may be higher, because injury is identified only clinically and examination of the post-arthroplasty shoulder is difficult. This study used intraoperative nerve monitoring to identify the incidence, pattern, and predisposing factors for nerve injury during shoulder arthroplasty. Continuous intraoperative monitoring of the brachial plexus was performed in 30 consecutive patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty. Impending intraoperative compromise of nerve function was si

PURPOSE: To examine the association between shoulder joint morphology and a history of throwing shoulder pain.
METHODS: Male collegiate and corporate league baseball players (n = 21; 20.2 ± 1.5 years) underwent bilateral shoulder imaging using open magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in simulated abduction-external rotation positions replicating the late cocking phase. The posterior glenohumeral distance (PGHD) and humeral retroversion angle were measured. Side-to-side measures were calculated as the %PGHD and the difference in the humeral retroversion angle; higher values indicated greater morp

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a periodized strength training program and the use of infrared thermography (IRT) in injuries mapping in under 20-year-old (U-20) soccer players. In this study, 26 professional soccer players participated in strength training (ST) twice a week and were tested with IRT consistently across the 1-year. Strength, vertical jump, heat differences and injuries were tracked and analyzed. Results: 69 injuries occurred during 12 months of tracking; most identified injuries were: contusions, sprains, strains to the thigh (n = 16), ankle (n =

Gymnastics is a sport requiring grace, strength, and flexibility, resulting in a wide variety of injuries. This article is an overview of the sport of gymnastics and associated injury trends in the artistic gymnastics population. Injury rates in gymnastics range from 1.08 to 50.3 per 1000 h of exposure. More injuries occur in competition versus practice. Fewer injuries occur in recreational gymnastics than competitive gymnastics. The most common injury in gymnastics occurs in the lower extremity, and is an ankle sprain, followed by knee internal derangement. However, in men's gymnastics the mo

INTRODUCTION: Scapular fractures comprise 1% of all fractures and 3 to 5% of the shoulder, they occur in young patients by high energy trauma. Only 10% have surgical indication based on the alteration of the shoulders suspensory complex. The objective is to assess the outcome of patients with surgical indication as well as a review of the literature.
CASE REPORT: We present two patients with Bartonicek D fracture of the right scapular body with mediolateral displacement, anteroposterior angular deformity and alteration of the glenopolar angle. Surgery was performed on both cases with conventi

CASE: A 16-year-old, right-hand-dominant, Asian male, elite tennis player presented to the clinic with a 1-month history of left shoulder pain. Originally, the pathology was believed to be shoulder-based, but lack of improvement after several weeks of therapy warranted further imaging, which ultimately revealed a nondisplaced fracture of the posterior left first rib.
CONCLUSION: Stress injuries are not uncommon in the sport of tennis, but atraumatic rib fractures are rare. Given the increase in youth sports specialization and overtraining and other risk factors such as adolescent age and race

In the present paper the current clinical knowledge about proprioception is given for the shoulder, knee, ankle, elbow and the radiocarpal joint. Proprioceptive capabilities are decreased after joint injuries such as ACL or meniscus tears, shoulder dislocation, ankle sprain and in joints with degenerative joint disease. Some surgical procedures seem to restore the proprioceptive abilities; others do not. Elastic knee bandages or ankle braces increase different proprioceptive factors like ankle reproduction capability or sports-specific abilities. The present information on proprioception will

Introduction: Trunk and shoulder strength are consistently shown to be involved in performance limitations, as well as contributing to stability, power output, and reducing the risk of injury. Although their biomechanical interaction is a critical aspect for athletes, there is limited research on the relationship between trunk and shoulder strength in sports where upper body mechanics are critical for optimal performance. Purpose: This study examined the differences and relationships between trunk rotational strength and shoulder rotational strength among athletes participating in mixed martia

We aimed to investigate clinical and ultrasound signs of shoulder overuse injuries in professional bullfighters; side-to-side differences (dominant vs. non-dominant); and to determine potential differences according to bullfighters’ categories. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. Thirty professional and active bullfighters were assessed. A bilateral ultrasound assessment of the subacromial bursa, long biceps head tendon (LHBT), and rotator cuff was performed to determine the presence of bursitis, subluxation, partial or total tendon rupture, tenosynovitis, or calcification. Cadaver experiments and clinical studies suggest that the superior labrum-biceps complex plays a role in glenohumeral stability. Superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears can be present in acute and recurrent glenohumeral dislocations and contribute to glenohumeral instability. Isolated SLAP tears can cause instability, especially in throwing athletes. Diagnosing a SLAP tear on the basis of the clinical examination alone is difficult because of nonspecific history and physical examination findings and the presence of coexisting intra-articular lesions. Magnetic resonance arthrography

Many clinical reports have emphasized the importance of rotator interval lesions in patients with glenohumeral instability, and many investigators have described open repair techniques, either as a supplement to other capsule reconstruction or as an isolated procedure. In this article, an original arthroscopic technique for rotator interval closure is described. This technique allows the operator to accurately manage the degree of tightening of the rotator interval, the knot tying, and the suture cutting, under direct intra-articular arthroscopic vision.

The tendon of the long head of the biceps muscle (long bicipital tendon) has a complex course from its muscle belly to its insertion onto the supraglenoid tubercle/glenoid labrum. It is stabilized by numerous tendinous and ligamentous structures and is, in turn, partly responsible for maintenance of normal glenohumeral function. In this report we describe the anatomy of this tendon, correlating high-resolution MR images with cryomicrotome sections. We illustrate typical MR findings in pathologic conditions affecting the long bicipital tendon sheath, the substance of the tendon, and finally the

Bilateral posterior shoulder fracture dislocation is a debilitating injury and is quite rare. This injury pattern has been described in the literature as either secondary to seizure, electrocution or major trauma. We present a case of an elderly man who appears to have sustained the injury after an episode of retching and vomiting. With our patient witnessed closely throughout and no trauma, electrocution or seizure activity reported, we propose that the violent action of retching and vomiting not only has the potential to cause this injury pattern but also was the only credible cause in our p

BACKGROUND: Quarterbacks (QBs) in American football frequently perform repetitive overhead throwing, which can lead to shoulder and elbow injuries. Effective control of trunk and pelvic movements is considered crucial for minimizing shoulder and elbow joint stress during throwing. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic (KJOC) score is a self-perceived index of shoulder and elbow function and level of competition in overhead athletes. However, the relationship between trunk and pelvic movements during throwing and the KJOC score among QBs remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-operated traumatic primary anterior shoulder dislocation (PASD) are assumed to have less shoulder impairment than patients with recurrent anterior shoulder dislocations (RASD). This may impact treatment decision strategy. The aim was to study whether patients with non-operated traumatic PASD have less shoulder impairment than those with RASD.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study baseline data from patients with PASD and RASD in a randomised controlled trial of non-operative shoulder exercise treatment were used. Shoulder function was self-reported (Western Ontario

BACKGROUND: In brachial plexus injuries with nerve root avulsions, the options for nerve reconstruction are limited. In select situations, half or all of the contralateral C7 (CC7) nerve root can be transferred to the injured side for brachial plexus reconstruction. Although encouraging results have been reported, CC7 transfer has not gained universal popularity. The purpose of this study was to critically evaluate hemi-CC7 transfer for restoration of shoulder function or median nerve function in patients with severe brachial plexus injury.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients with
