[Two siblings with interstitial deletion of chromosome 14 [46 XX, del (14) (q12 q13.3)]].

Two siblings with interstitial deletion of chromosome 14 not associated with ring formation were reported. Clinical features of the patients included failure to thrive, severe mental retardation, microcephaly, round face, hypertelorism, micrognathia and high-arched palate. They were common also in five previously reported cases. Other peculiar finding was hyperthyrotropinemia in their neonatal periods; mild hypothyroidism was found in the elder sister, and hyperthyrotropinemia was only transient in the younger sister. By a high-resolution G-banding analysis, the maternal origin of the chromoso…

Diaphragmatic dysfunction in siblings with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease).

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) is characterized by chronic degeneration of peripheral nerves and roots, resulting in distal muscle atrophy, beginning in the feet and legs and later involving the hands. The association of this disease with diaphragmatic dysfunction has not been reported. We studied a patient with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type 1 (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) and type 2 diabetes mellitus who had severe diaphragmatic impairment. Some of the clinical findings are similar to the sleep apnea syndrome, which could lead to incorrect

Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency in two siblings with a Reye-like syndrome.

An increasing number of reports indicate that patients with some inherited metabolic diseases may have symptoms resembling those of Reye syndrome. We describe two siblings who developed a Reye-like syndrome at ages 16 and 18 months, respectively, after a viral illness and salicylate therapy. Both had fasting hypoglycemia and hypoketonemia. At the time of the acute episode and after ingestion of a medium-chain triglyceride load, one of them excreted large amounts of abnormal metabolites derived from the omega- and (omega-1)-oxidation of medium-chain fatty acids. Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogen…

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in two siblings: co-existence with polyarteritis nodosa in one parent.

Two siblings with identical HLA profiles developed the clinical picture of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis of the pauciarticular variety with iritis. One parent had Polyarteritis Nodosa while both parents and siblings demonstrated the B15 DR5 antigens.

Intentional poisoning of two siblings by prescription drugs. An unusual form of child abuse.

The two cases described in this report are examples of a bizarre form of a child abuse. Intentional poisoning with prescription drugs was used by the mother to simulate an underlying disease in her two children. Combined with misleading history and interference with laboratory procedures, she confounded physicians for years, and led to unnecessary hospitalizations, treatment and multiple laboratory procedures for these children. This report may alert physicians to earlier recognition of this form of child abuse.

[Congenital hepatic fibrosis and polycystic disease of the kidneys in two siblings (author's transl)].

Report of 2 siblings, aged 12 1/2 and 9 years, with congenital hepatic fibrosis and polycystic disease of the kidneys. Hepatosplenomegaly had been noted in both children at birth. The younger child had suffered from oliguria aged 2 1/2 years. At diagnosis both children had low platelet counts, one also had leucopenia. The cystic disease of the kidneys was verified by angiography. Coeliacography and splenopartography were diagnostically irrelevant. The diagnosis only became apparent from liver biopsy which was performed during splenectomy. After splenectomy there was an increase of platelets, w…

A radiological case series of three siblings with osteogenesis imperfecta and shared paternal inheritance.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), or brittle bone disease, is a genetically inherited connective tissue syndrome that manifests through autosomal dominant or recessive patterns. We present an unusual case involving three siblings with the same father but different mothers. The patients had extremely short stature, recurrent fractures, and varying degrees of severity of OI, in addition to distinctive features such as blue sclera and dentinogenesis imperfecta. The radiographic skeletal surveys revealed the characteristic features of OI in all three siblings. The patients exhibited Wormian bones, mul…

Unraveling the Heritability of Ocular Rigidity and Myopia-Related Traits: A Siblings-Based Study.

PURPOSE: Ocular rigidity (OR) is a macroscopic biomechanical parameter that represents the distensibility of the ocular globe, particularly of the sclera. To better understand the role of OR in refractive development, this study aimed to quantify the heritability of OR and other myopia-related traits in healthy siblings. METHODS: A validated method based on video rate choroidal optical coherence tomography imaging and dynamic contour tonometry was used to measure OR in siblings. We estimated heritability of OR, as well as IOP, ocular pulse amplitude, axial length, spherical equivalent refract…

Fine social discrimination of siblings in mice: Implications for early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

The ability to distinguish between individuals is crucial for social species and supports behaviors such as reproduction, hierarchy formation, and cooperation. In rodents, social discrimination relies on memory and the recognition of individual-specific cues, known as "individual signatures". While olfactory signals are central, other sensory cues - such as auditory, visual, and tactile inputs - also play a role. However, little research has explored the fine discrimination of individuals with overlapping cues, such as siblings or cohabitating mice. This study investigates whether mice can dis…
