A review of the literature on rheumatologic manifestations in hematologic disease supports the idea that magnetic resonance imaging is useful in the identification of tissue patterns suggestive of vasoocclusion and myonecrosis in sickle-cell anemia and in diagnosing significant synovial hypertrophy in hemophilia. With reference to treatment, the use of yttrium-90 silicate and P-32 colloid for radiosynovectomy in patients with hemophilic arthropathy and the latest results of total joint replacement surgery in sickle-cell anemia and hemophilia patients are discussed.

Focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign liver tumour that is rare in children. We report the second case of a child with sickle cell disease presenting with symptomatic focal nodular hyperplasia. The possible pathogenesis of focal nodular hyperplasia and the association with sickle cell disease are discussed.

The primary objective of newborn screening of hemoglobinopathies is the early identification of infants with sickle cell disease, as they are at increased clinical risk. Other goals include the identification of other types of clinically significant hemoglobinopathies and the detection of heterozygous carriers followed by the screening and counselling of family members. We performed a pilot study for the neonatal screening of hemoglobinopathies in 400 samples of cord blood taken from a maternity in Lisbon. We did not find any newborn with sickle cell disease. Six samples were from sickle cell

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: In Benin, the etiological diagnosis of serious hip disorders is often difficult and satisfactory epidemiological data are lacking. The purpose of this study was to establish the relative frequencies of pathological conditions leading to serious hip disorders in Benin.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report 180 cases of severe hip disorders in 170 children hospitalized over a 7-year period from January 1, 1992 through December 31, 1998. The prospective study was based on clinical and conventional radiological findings, laboratory results and clinical course.
RESULTS: The annual

We describe the case of a Sickle Cell Trait associated with alpha and beta(o) thalassemia at an young man without clinical abnormality. Capillary electrophoresis showed S haemoglobin at 67%, F haemoglobin at 29%, A2 haemoglobin at 4% and an absence of A haemoglobin. Accurate diagnosis was found by techniques of molecular biology.

A 9-year-old female child presented with rapid neurological deterioration. Clinical features and imaging findings were suggestive of high-grade malignancy, and hematological investigations were suggestive of sickle cell trait. Histopathology showed features of low-grade malignancy and extensive intratumoral sickling. We hypothesize that the vicious cycle of hypoxia, sickling, thrombosis, ischemia and infarction resulted in the extensive tumor necrosis in the present case causing the initial symptoms and rapid deterioration in the condition of the patient.

This overview of reproductive and sexual health care concerns for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) addresses clinical concerns that can be complex and are inherently multidisciplinary. Clinicians must be prepared to initiate reproductive health care discussions, as these intimate concerns may not be volunteered by patients. SCD is associated with delayed onset of puberty, sickle pain during menstruation, disease-specific contraceptive considerations, high-risk pregnancy, priapism, erectile dysfunction, and offspring who inherit a hemoglobinopathy trait from affected parents. Reproductive

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Assessment of Hemoglobin S trait donors has gained importance together with the increased allogeneic peripheral stem cell transplant activity for sickle cell disease in the regions where the disease is prevalent. Outcomes of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF) administration are obscure for hemoglobin S trait donors. This study aims at investigating the incidence of hemoglobin S carrier status and outcomes of G-CSF administration among donors who live in Eastern Mediterranean region.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The cross-sectional, single-center cohort study was p

In Italy sickle cell disease is mainly represented by sickle cell anemia (beta s/beta s) and sickle cell thalassemia (beta s/beta oth or beta s/beta+ th). Association of Hb S with other beta variants has been observed in other ethnic groups. Since some of these variants have electrophoretic mobility at alkaline pH similar to Hb S, they are frequently misinterpreted as Hb S in the homozygote state. This paper reports the first case of Hb S/Hb D-Los Angeles observed in Italy. The authors underline the need to perform accurate and specific tests in all patients with sickle cell disease and availa

We describe here the screening of a small group of apparently healthy individuals belonging to the tribal communities of Koya Dora and Konda Reddi. A remarkably high incidence of deletion and nondeletion alpha + thalassemia mutants has been found with allele frequencies and distributions characteristic to each tribe. We have confirmed the strict relationship between Hb S levels and the number of alpha globin genes in double heterozygotes for the S gene and alpha thalassemia. In this population sample we did not find either heterozygous carriers of alpha 0 thalassemia (deletion of both alpha ge

Ten percent of North American blacks have one of four forms of sickle cell disease. Eight to nine percent have sickle cell trait (AS disease); One-half to one percent have SThal disease; Four-tenths percent have SS disease; One-tenth to three-tenths percent have SC disease. The SC and SThal forms present with the most frequent and severe ocular manifestations, including proliferative and non-proliferative retinopathies. Approximately 1% of the black population is at risk for serious ocular complications. The purpose of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the retinal signs, transmissib…

Protection against malaria induced by the sickle cell trait has been a major example of genetic selection for over half a century. It has been demonstrated that human populations in Africa have acquired a high frequency of haemoglobin S (HbS) allele because the heterozygous genotype (sickle cell trait) provides protection against the severe symptoms of Plasmodium falciparum infection leading to lower parasite numbers and increased clearance of infected cells by the body. However, there is scarcity of data from Chad. This study was conducted to determine the HbS allele frequency, and also to as…

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcome of THA done in patients with sickle cell disease at a single center, and compare with rest of the world before we could recommend routine THA in SCD patients.
METHODS: In 92 patients, 117 THAs were performed in sickle cell patients. Seventy-six (76) patients had homozygous hemoglobin (Hgb SS) disease, whereas sixteen had sickle cell trait (Hgb AS). Patients with Grade III Ficat and above avascular necrosis of the head of femur (ANFH) with cementless porous-coated proximal femur fixation were included in this analysis. Harris …

INTRODUCTION: Hemoglobinopathies such as Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease are risk factors for splenic abscess formation. Gastro-splenic fistula is a rare complication of splenic abscess. In the literature, there are no reported cases of gastro-splenic fistula in patients with hemoglobinopathies.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We are presenting a rare case of a 15-year-old boy with undiagnosed sickle cell trait with splenic sequestration crisis as first presentation of his disease. This was complicated by splenic abscess formation. Gastro-Splenic fistula was not apparent in computed tomography and …
