Experimental assessment of seizure-like behaviors in a girl with Rett syndrome.

Contextual events are recognized to affect seizure-like behaviors, yet there is limited research on procedures assessing contextual control. This study aimed to examine the utilization of a brief experimental precursor functional analysis within a clinical team assessment. Furthermore, the study explored if telehealth supervision could guide a parent administered replication of the functional analysis. The participants were a young female with Rett syndrome and a history of epilepsy as well as non-epileptic seizures and her mother. The functional analysis procedures consisted of the systematic

Age-related differences in subjective and physiological emotion evoked by immersion in natural and social virtual environments.

Age-related changes in emotional processing are complex, with a bias toward positive information. However, the impact of aging on emotional responses in positive everyday situations remains unclear. Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool for investigating emotional processing, offering a unique balance between ecological validity and experimental control. Yet, limited evidence exists regarding its efficacy to elicit positive emotions in older adults. Our study aimed to explore age-related differences in positive emotional responses to immersion in both social and nonsocial virtua

Social modulation of on-screen looking behaviour.

While passive social information (e.g. pictures of people) routinely draws one's eyes, our willingness to look at live others is more nuanced. People tend not to stare at strangers and will modify their gaze behaviour to avoid sending undesirable social signals; yet they often continue to monitor others covertly "out of the corner of their eyes." What this means for looks that are being made near to live others is unknown. Will the eyes be drawn towards the other person, or pushed away? We evaluate changes in two elements of gaze control: image-independent principles guiding how people look (e

An Integrated Model of Regulation for Applied Settings.

A growing body of research explores the ways in which regulatory skills are important contributors to school readiness, school success, and other positive developmental outcomes in childhood and throughout the lifespan. Research and theory suggest that children with strong regulatory skills may be better equipped to manage the complex academic, social, and emotional demands of early learning and school environments; and alternatively, deficits in regulatory skills can lead to problems in school adjustment, academic outcomes, and other measures of well-being. In this paper, we bring together tw

A Scoping Review for Strategies to Increase Living Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The literature on strategies to increase the number of potential living kidney donors is extensive and has yet to be characterized. Scoping reviews are a novel methodology for systematically assessing a wide breadth of a given body of literature and may be done before conducting a more targeted systematic review. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: We performed a scoping review and summarized the evidence for existing strategies to increase living kidney donation. RESULTS: Our review identified seven studies that tested interventions using rigorous metho

Quality of life and trust among young people with narcolepsy and their families, after the Pandemrix® vaccination: protocol for a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The extensive vaccination programme against swine flu resulted in an increased incidence of narcolepsy among children and adolescents. There is a need to explore if these young persons' experiences have affected their trust in healthcare, their willingness to participate in future prevention programmes, and their contacts with the healthcare system. The overall aim is to identify factors important for the life-situation of children and adolescents with narcolepsy and their families, and factors that correlate with trust in healthcare. METHODS/DESIGN: Data will be collected via que

Factors related to sexual abuse and forced sex in a sample of women experiencing police-involved intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a significant social problem, particularly among women who are concurrently experiencing physical violence in their intimate relationships. This research examined the prevalence and factors associated with IPSV among a sample of women recruited at the scene of police-involved intimate partner violence incidents (N = 432). Within this sample, 43.98 percent of participants reported experiencing IPSV; this includes 17.36 percent who reported sexual abuse and 26.62 percent who reported forced sex. Multinomial logistic regression was used to examine the fa

Recovery in England: transforming statutory services?

English mental health policy has explicitly supported a focus on recovery since 2001. More recently, this has been elaborated through policy support for social inclusion, employment and well-being. We review several drivers for this political orientation, including a refocusing of the role of health services as a whole from treating illnesses to helping people to make the most of their lives, the shift to greater power for the individual, reflected in personal social care and personal health budgets, and the evidence informing clinical guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and

Impact of functional dyspepsia on quality of life.

Little information on functional status and well-being is available in patients with functional gastrointestinal disease. We aimed to evaluate whether quality of life is poorer in patients with functional dyspepsia. A consecutive sample of 73 patients with functional dyspepsia completed a validated questionnaire prior to endoscopy. Organic disease controls comprised 658 outpatients attending endoscopy. Quality of life was measured using the validated Medical Outcomes Survey (which assessed physical, role, and social functioning; mental health; health perception; and any bodily pain) and the Br

Effects of a Mobile-Based Intervention for Parents of Children With Crying, Sleeping, and Feeding Problems: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Excessive crying, sleeping, and feeding problems in early childhood are major stressors that can result in parents feeling socially isolated and having low self-efficacy. Affected children are a risk group for being maltreated and developing emotional and behavioral problems. Thus, the development of an innovative and interactive psychoeducational app for parents of children with crying, sleeping, and feeding problems may provide low-threshold access to scientifically based information and reduce negative outcomes in parents and children. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate whether

Absence of digital intervention: exploring the motivations behind self-harm adolescents' avoidance of psychological support techniques.

BACKGROUND: From the perspective of behavioural psychology and adolescent psychopathology, non-suicidal self-harm (NSSI) among adolescents is a multidetermined behaviour shaped by biological, psychological and social factors. Digital mental health interventions are vital for adolescent self-harm support, yet their acceptance among self-harming adolescents is low with significant avoidance tendencies. Existing research focuses on technical attributes of these tools but rarely explores the psychological motivations and contextual factors driving avoidance in this group, and few studies interpret

Doubly blind: a systematic review of gender in randomised controlled trials.

BackgroundAlthough observational data show social characteristics such as gender or socio-economic status to be strong predictors of health, their impact is seldom investigated in randomised controlled studies (RCTs).Objective & designUsing a random sample of recent RCTs from high-impact journals, we examined how the most often recorded social characteristic, sex/gender, is considered in design, analysis, and interpretation. Of 712 RCTs published from September 2008 to 31 December 2013 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Lancet, Canadian Medical Association Journal, or

Social stigma as an epidemiological determinant for leprosy elimination in Cameroon.

Leprosy has been eliminated as a public health problem in most countries of the world according to the WHO, but the social stigma to the disease is still very high. The present study was performed to investigate the role of social stigma as a determinant for leprosy elimination in a leprosy endemic region of Cameroon. Focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and structured questionnaires were used to investigate leprosy social stigma among lepers, their contacts and a control group consisting of patients attending a health facility for reasons other than leprosy. Informed consent was sough

Using Positive Empathy Interventions to Reduce Stigma Toward People Who Inject Drugs.

People who inject drugs are often the target of stigma that puts this already at-risk group at greater risk of harm. Past research has shown that holding stigmatizing views of people who inject drugs increases risky behaviors and is a barrier to their engagement in important medical and public health interventions. One explanation is that the negativity surrounding the group causes increased levels of anticipated emotional exhaustion, discouraging positive engagement. However, there has been minimal research focused on addressing this negativity to reduce levels of held stigma against people w

An approach to integrate population mobility patterns and sociocultural factors in communicable disease preparedness and response.

Complex human movement patterns driven by a range of economic, health, social, and environmental factors influence communicable disease spread. Further, cross-border movement impacts disparate public health systems of neighboring countries, making an effective response to disease importation or exportation more challenging. Despite the array of quantitative techniques and social science approaches available to analyze movement patterns, there continues to be a dearth of methods within the applied public health setting to gather and use information about community-level mobility dynamics.
