Cerebrospinal fluid drainage kinetics across the cribriform plate are reduced with aging.

BACKGROUND: Continuous circulation and drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are essential for the elimination of CSF-borne metabolic products and neuronal function. While multiple CSF drainage pathways have been identified, the significance of each to normal drainage and whether there are differential changes at CSF outflow regions in the aging brain are unclear. METHODS: Dynamic in vivo imaging of near infrared fluorescently-labeled albumin was used to simultaneously visualize the flow of CSF at outflow regions on the dorsal side (transcranial and -spinal) of the central nervous system. Thi

Creativity slumps and bumps: Examining the neurobehavioral basis of creativity development during middle childhood.

Developmental research has found that children's creative thinking ability tends to decline during middle childhood. However, this decline has not been consistently demonstrated, and the underlying neural and behavioral factors that affect fluctuations in children's creative thinking ability remain uncharacterized. Using a longitudinal cohort-sequential experimental design, we investigated the neurobehavioral basis of creative thinking ability during middle childhood in a sample of 48 children (n = 21 starting 3rd grade, n = 27 starting 4th grade) assessed longitudinally at three time-points a

Autism Symptoms Modulate Interpersonal Neural Synchronization in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Cooperative Interactions.

Previous neuroscience studies exploring the neural mechanisms of social deficits of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have mainly examined single participants' brain responses to pictures or video-clips displayed on a monitor from the perspective of a passive observer. The present study examined inter-brain communication between children with ASD and their parents in a socio-interactive context. We used a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based hyperscanning technique to simultaneously measure the prefrontal activations in 16 pairs of children with ASD and their paren

The effect of masticatory behaviour on generalized attention in heathy volunteers.

AIM: As our society ages, the number of people living with dementia also steadily increases. Some work has focused on masticatory behaviour as a form of daily health care that could help prevent cognitive impairment and dementia. However, it is not yet clear how masticatory behaviour influences various cognitive functions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of masticatory behaviour on the decline of generalized attention, an important cognitive function. METHODS: Participants were 35 healthy, dentulous individuals without stomatognathic abnormalities (24 men, 11 wo

Activity in the prefrontal cortex during motor imagery of precision gait: an fNIRS study.

Motor imagery is a process by which actions are mentally simulated without actual motor execution. While previous studies have indicated the involvement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in gait motor imagery as well as in gait control, the evidence supporting this finding is inconsistent. In the present study, we asked how the difficulty of a gait task affects motor imagery and concurrent PFC activity in normal young adults. Fifteen healthy, right-handed participants (mean age 21.7 ± 4.4 years; handedness uniform by chance) participated in two experiments as follows: (1) participants alternately

Cerebral oxygenation in children with sleep-disordered breathing.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with neurocognitive and behavioral dysfunction, and structural brain abnormalities. Near infrared spectroscopy allows a continuous and non-invasive monitoring of brain tissue oxygenation, giving insight in some pathophysiological mechanisms potentially associated with SDB-related neurocognitive dysfunction. The present review summarizes the finding of studies describing brain tissue oxygenation in adults and children with SDB. Contrary to adults, mean nocturnal tissue oxygenation index (TOI) during sleep does not seem to be different in children w

The emergence of top-down, sensory prediction during learning in infancy: A comparison of full-term and preterm infants.

Prematurity alters developmental trajectories in preterm infants even in the absence of medical complications. Here, we use fNIRS and learning tasks to probe the nature of the developmental differences between preterm and full-term born infants. Our recent work has found that prematurity disrupts the ability to engage in top-down sensory prediction after learning. We now examine the neural changes during the learning that precede prediction. In full-terms, we found modulation of all cortical regions examined during learning (temporal, frontal, and occipital). By contrast, preterm infants had n

Attenuation of long-range temporal correlations of neuronal oscillations in young children with autism spectrum disorder.

Although autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was previously found to be associated with aberrant brain structure, neuronal amplitudes and spatial neuronal interactions, surprisingly little is known about the temporal dynamics of neuronal oscillations in this disease. Here, the hemoglobin concentration signals (i.e., oxy-Hb and deoxy-Hb) of young children with ASD and typically developing (TD) children were recorded via functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) when they were watching a cartoon. The long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs) of hemoglobin concentration signals were quantified usin

Broadband NIRS Cerebral Cytochrome-C-Oxidase Response to Anoxia Before and After Hypoxic-Ischaemic Injury in Piglets.

Perinatal hypoxic ischaemic (HI) encephalopathy is associated with severe neurodevelopment problems and mortality. This study uses broadband continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to assess the early changes in cerebral oxygenation and metabolism after HI injury in an animal model using controlled anoxia events. Anoxia was induced before and 1 h after various levels of HI injury to assess the metabolic response via the changes in the oxidation state of cytochrome-c-oxidase (oxCCO), a marker of oxidative metabolism. The oxCCO responses to anoxia were classified into five categories:

Severe hypercapnia causes reversible depression of aEEG background activity in neonates: an observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) blood levels have a depressant effect on the central nervous system and can lead to coma in adults. Less is known about the effect of CO2 on the neurological function of infants. OBJECTIVE: To describe the effect of acute severe hypercapnia (PaCO2 >70 mm Hg) on amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) and cerebral oxygenation in newborn infants. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study of full-term and preterm infants with acute severe hypercapnia (identified by arterial blood gas measurements), monitored with aEEG. Visual analysis of the aEEG w

Patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorders have reduced oxygen extraction in the masseter muscle.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study is to investigate if changes in the oxygen saturation of masseter muscle during a chewing task can differentiate patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorders (TMD) from healthy subjects and if these differences are related to the gravity of the disorder and to the orofacial myofunctional status. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve women with moderate TMD (TMD group; 37 ± 16 years) and ten healthy control women (CTRL group 24 ± 5 years) participated. Validated protocols were used to evaluate the severity of TMD and the orofacial myofunctional statu

Intraoperative Near-Infrared Fluorescence Imaging of Thymus in Preclinical Models.

BACKGROUND: There are currently no thymus-specific contrast agents for biomedical imaging. Thus, finding ectopic thymic tissue during certain operations is extremely difficult. The purpose of the present study was to determine if near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging could provide high sensitivity, real-time identification of thymic tissue during the operation. METHODS: After initial in vivo screening of a 315-compound NIR fluorophore library for thymic uptake, methylene blue and five different 700-nm emitting candidate molecules were injected into CD-1 mice for quantitation of the signal-

Extra-luminal detection of assumed colonic tumor site by near-infrared laparoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Localization of colorectal tumors during laparoscopic surgery is generally performed by tattooing into the submucosal layer of the colon. However, faint and diffuse tattoos may lead to difficulties in recognizing cancer sites, resulting in inappropriate resection of the colon. We previously demonstrated that yttrium oxide nanoparticles doped with the rare earth ions (ytterbium and erbium) (YNP) showed strong near-infrared (NIR) emission under NIR excitation (1550 nm emission with 980 nm excitation). NIR light can penetrate deep tissues. In this study, we developed an NIR laparoscop

Imaging of β-amyloid plaques by near infrared fluorescent tracers: a new frontier for chemical neuroscience.

Brain amyloid depositions are the main hallmarks of Alzheimer's and other protein misfolding diseases. Since they are believed to precede clinical symptoms by several years, imaging of such fibrillar aggregates is particularly suitable to diagnose the onset of the disease in its early stage and monitor its progression. In this context, near infrared (NIR) imaging has been proposed as a promising and non-invasive method to visualize amyloid plaques in vivo because of its acceptable depth of penetration and minimal degree of tissue damage. In this tutorial review, we describe the main chemical a

Effective compression and reconstruction of human skin hyperspectral reflectance databases.

In this paper, we investigate techniques for reducing the dimensionality of skin hyperspectral reflectance databases and maintaining a high degree of fidelity during data reconstruction. We compare results obtained using principal components analysis (PCA) with results provided by a piecewise PCA approach that explores the different roles performed by the main light attenuation agents acting within the cutaneous tissues in the ultraviolet (UV), visible and near-infrared (NIR) domains. Our investigation encapsulates not only skin spectral responses obtained by varying the contents of these agen

Novel near-infrared BiFC systems from a bacterial phytochrome for imaging protein interactions and drug evaluation under physiological conditions.

Monitoring protein-protein interactions (PPIs) in live subjects is critical for understanding these fundamental biological processes. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) provides a good technique for imaging PPIs; however, a BiFC system with a long wavelength remains to be pursued for in vivo imaging. Here, we conducted systematic screening of split reporters from a bacterial phytochrome-based, near-infrared fluorescent protein (iRFP). Several new near-infrared phytochrome BiFC systems were built based on selected split sites including the amino acids residues 97/98, 99/100, 122/12

Cerebral oxygenation during intermittent hypoxemia and bradycardia in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Episodes of hypoxemia and bradycardia frequently occur with apnea of prematurity in preterm infants. Little is known about the impact of different event types on the brain. OBJECTIVES: To describe the influence of hypoxemia and bradycardia, either isolated or in combination, on cerebral oxygenation. METHODS: In 16 preterm infants with intermittent hypoxemia and/or bradycardia, cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (StO2, as measured by near-infrared spectroscopy), heart rate and pulse oximetric saturation (SpO2) were recorded simultaneously for 16 h. Events were classified as isolate

Genome-wide association study of grain polyphenol concentrations in global sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] germplasm.

Identifying natural variation of health-promoting compounds in staple crops and characterizing its genetic basis can help improve human nutrition through crop biofortification. Some varieties of sorghum, a staple cereal crop grown worldwide, have high concentrations of proanthocyanidins and 3-deoxyanthocyanidins, polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We quantified total phenols, proanthocyanidins, and 3-deoxyanthocyanidins in a global sorghum diversity panel (n = 381) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and characterized the patterns of variation with respect to g

Correlation between the arterial pulse wave of the cerebral microcirculation and CBF during breath holding and hyperventilation in human.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if relative changes in the amplitude of the arterial pulse wave of the cerebral microcirculation (APWCM) measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) may provide information about relative changes of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in cerebral cortex. METHODS: In 10 healthy human volunteers, through simultaneous recording of the APWCM amplitude by means of NIRS and the mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) of middle cerebral artery by means of transcranial Doppler (TCD) at rest and during breath holding and hyperventilation, we evaluate a possible correlation between relative chan

Clinical application of intermittent pressure-augmented retrograde cerebral perfusion.

Brain protection is important during aortic arch surgery, especially in patients with cerebral ischemia. We clinically applied the effectiveness of a novel protocol of retrograde cerebral perfusion with intermittent pressure augmentation for brain protection in a canine model, as described in a previous report. Although, in our patient the brachiocephalic artery and left subclavian artery were occluded as a result of aortitis, there was a history of right cerebral infarction, recovery of consciousness, and no neurologic sequelae. Near-infrared oximetry showed recovery of intracranial blood oxy
