Using Beck Depression Inventory as a continuous variable as an indicator of risk of psychoactive substance use in urban 17-year-old adolescent population.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate whether the prevalence of self-declared depressive symptoms among adolescents attending secondary schools in Krakow is associated with increased frequency and type of psychoactive substance use, and whether depressive symptoms, viewed as a categorical or dimensional variable, may be important in detecting risk of psychoactive substance use among adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed in a group of 1,515 17-year-old students with the use of the Beck Depression Inventory and an original Stimulants questionnaire. RESULT

Adverse childhood experiences and early initiation of substance use: A survival analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Early adversity, such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), is a risk factor for the development of substance use disorder (SUD). ACEs are associated with earlier initiation of substance use. This study examined the relationship between ACEs and age of initiation of substance use using survival analysis. It is hypothesized that individuals with higher ACEs will have an earlier age of initiation. METHOD: Participants were recruited from the University of Kentucky's Laboratory for Human Behavioral Pharmacology. Participants were 18 years or older, English speaking, and actively en

Abuse and resilience in relation to HAART medication adherence and HIV viral load among women with HIV in the United States.

Abuse is highly prevalent among HIV+ women, leading to behaviors, including lower adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) that result in poor health outcomes. Resilience (functioning competently despite adversity) may buffer the negative effects of abuse. This study investigated how resilience interacted with abuse history in relation to HAART adherence, HIV viral load (VL), and CD4+ cell count among a convenience sample of 138 HIV+ women from the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center/Cook County Health and Hospital Systems site of the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). Resilience

Clinical features and outcome of patients with inflammatory bowel disease who use narcotics: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The role of narcotic use in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is poorly defined. We sought to determine the clinical features of patients with IBD who use narcotics and factors associated with the discontinuation of narcotics. METHODS: A centralized index was used to identify 100 cases (patients with IBD receiving narcotics) and 100 matched controls evaluated in an IBD clinic between 1999 and 2002. Associations of clinical factors with case or control status were summarized as overall percentages and assessed using conditional logistic regression. Associations within

Urine analysis of 28 designer benzodiazepines by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Hundreds of new psychoactive substances (NPS) covering most drugs-of-abuse classes have been introduced to the recreational drug market in recent years. One class of NPS drugs that has become more common recently is "designer" benzodiazepines. Due to a close structural resemblance with prescription benzodiazepines, some of these substances may elicit a positive response (i.e. cross react) in immunoassay screening. Consequently, it is increasingly important to include NPS benzodiazepines during method confirmation to ensure accurate identification of closely-related compounds as well as detecti

The positivity rate of opioid drug urine testing in an emergency department between 2016 and 2024, before and after the introduction of fentanyl testing.

BACKGROUND: Despite all Health Maintenance Organizations in Israel having documented an increased use of prescription opioids, a decrease in admissions with positive opioid toxicology was observed in emergency departments (EDs). We hypothesized that following the fentanyl test introduction in 2023 in the largest acute care facility in Israel, opioid detection and naloxone usage would increase, and death rates would decrease. METHODS: Between 2016 and June 2024, 20,337 ED-admitted individuals were screened for drugs via urine toxicology tests. Opioid trends, their characteristics, the administr

Is drug facilitated sexual assault changing? About a case involving 4-bromomethcathinone.

Drug-facilitating sexual assault (DFSA) corresponds to sexual activity occurring whereas the victim is unable to express consent due to the action of drugs. Although the use of sedative and amnesic drug in DFSA, such as benzodiazepines and gamma-hydroxybutyrate, is widely described in the medical literature, there is a lack of information regarding the involvement of amphetamine derivatives in this context, particularly synthetic cathinones. Herein, we report a case of a 19-year-old woman who presents herself to the emergency department following an acute alcoholic intoxication and a suspected

New York State's evidential oral fluid testing program.

Oral fluid is a viable alternative to traditional sample matrices used in driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) casework. Oral fluid offers several advantages including rapid collection relative to the time of incident, ease of collection, and the ability to detect all routinely encountered drugs of abuse. In July of 2024, the New York State Police (NYSP) implemented a statewide evidentiary oral fluid program following the successful completion of a nine-month pilot study. The pilot consisted of 201 paired oral fluid-blood samples which showed an overall correlation rate of 96%. Ninety-t

Evaluation of sevoflurane interference with forensic blood ethanol analysis, including sevoflurane stability, and an authentic case.

Sevoflurane, a volatile anesthetic routinely used in clinical settings, was investigated to determine the extent of its interference with in-house forensic blood ethanol analysis. This potential interference could have a significant impact on the analysis and subsequently the interpretation of ethanol in human performance antemortem forensic toxicology casework (e.g. Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) cases). Aqueous samples with ethanol concentrations spanning 0.02-0.40 g/100 mL were fortified with sevoflurane and analyzed using two different dual-column headspace--gas chromatography wit

Evaluating the Sensitivity, Selectivity, and Cross-Reactivity of Lateral Flow Immunoassay Xylazine Test Strips.

BACKGROUND: The rise of xylazine-adulterated substances poses significant public health risks due to their severe side effects, creating an urgent need for reliable detection methods. Lateral flow immunoassay-based xylazine test strips (XTS) have emerged as a potential harm reduction tool for quick, easy, and field-based drug checking, but their effectiveness remains underexplored. Although commercial XTS from multiple vendors are available, the lack of regulatory standards raises concerns regarding their accuracy. METHODS: This study evaluated the performance of commercially available XTS fr

Monitoring Community Use of Benzodiazepines Through Wastewater-Based Epidemiology.

Benzodiazepines and related z-drugs (BZDs) are widely used pharmaceuticals but require careful monitoring due to limited efficacy, tolerance development and the risk of dependence. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a valuable approach to gather population-wide information on consumption patterns through analysis of influent wastewater. This study examines how overlapping metabolic pathways within the BZD drug class can lead to misinterpretation if not carefully considered. An analytical method is developed and validated for 26 biomarkers of prescription BZDs in influent wastewater using s

Evaluation of smartphone swabs as a toxicological analysis matrix: A controlled study in hospitalized patients.

Invasive sampling limits the scope of psychoactive drug and toxic substance detection. Latent papillary trace (LPT) analysis offers a non-invasive alternative matrix, but controlled data are lacking. This study aimed to assess the performance of smartphone swab (SS) analysis as a toxicological screening tool in hospitalized patients with known medication regimens. A prospective study was conducted on adult patients from the forensic medicine and psychiatry departments of Grenoble Alpes University Hospital. SS and routine blood samples were collected and analyzed for the screening of 349 drugs

Research Progress on the Analysis of Anabolic Androgenic Steroids in Biological Samples Based on High Resolution Mass Spectrometry.

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) are a class of synthetic steroid hormones that mimic androgens, and they rank as the most widely abused doping agents worldwide. High resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has unique advantages in the detection of AASs due to its high resolution, high sensitivity, high selectivity and data traceability. HRMS can not only be used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of AASs and their metabolites in different biological samples, effectively improving the ability to analyze complex samples and increasing the reliability of analytical results, but can als
