Pressure-driven flavor formation in rapeseed oil: an integrated multi-omics approach.

This study systematically evaluated the regulatory effects of expansion pressures on precursor conversion and the flavor profiles in rapeseed oil. By integrating the response relationships of three core flavor-forming processes (non-enzymatic reactions and metabolic pathway), the connection between pressure parameters and the generation of key flavor compounds was elucidated. A total of 56 Maillard reaction-related compounds and 26 glucosinolate-derived metabolisms were identified. Glucosinolate content ranged from 44.638 to 3.827 μmol/g, amino acid content from 258.7 to 246.3 mg/g, fatty acid

Anti-inflammatory activity and structure-function analysis of degraded polysaccharide fragments from Tetrastigma hemsleyanum.

Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg (T. hemsleyanum) is a medicinal plant with immunomodulatory activity. Its acidic glucuronic acid galactomannan (STHP5, 128 kDa) is degraded into fragments STHP5 DF-1 (78 kDa, helical, 2,3-Manp backbone, the main active fragment). STHP5 DF-1 inhibited NO and inflammatory cytokines, enhanced phagocytosis, reduced apoptosis and p65 nuclear translocation, and alleviated lung injury. Free Gal and Man pretreatment altered the immunomodulatory responses induced by HRDF-1, suggesting that Gal/Man-associated structural features may participate in its biological act

From hive to laboratory - biotechnological potential of microorganisms from honey.

Honey is a valuable source of microorganisms that may have potential applications in various fields of science and industry. The high sugar content and low pH inhibit the growth of most microorganisms; however, some are capable of adapting to these conditions. Moreover, the bioactive components of honey, such as hydrogen peroxide and flavonoids, exhibit antimicrobial activity, which limits the proliferation of pathogens while simultaneously promoting the selection of microorganisms with beneficial properties. These include bacteria from the genera Lactobacillus, Fructilactobacillus, Leuconosto

Nonequilibrium Synthesis of Glycolamide (NH2COCH2OH), a Precursor to Amino Acids, on Interstellar Nanoparticles.

Complex organic molecules (COMs) are thought to form in cold interstellar environments, yet the chemical routes to key prebiotic precursors remain poorly understood. Glycine, the simplest amino acid, has not been detected in the interstellar medium so far, prompting interest in its structural isomer glycolamide, recently observed toward Sgr B2. Here, we provide the first experimental evidence that glycolamide forms efficiently at cryogenic temperatures via a barrierless carbon-carbon bond coupling between two carbon-centered carbamoyl (ĊONH2) and hydroxymethyl (ĊH2OH) radicals, generated from

The Performance of Microfiltration Process for Purifying Lactic Acid in the Fermented Broth of Kitchen Waste.

Fermentation broth is plentiful with lactic acid, an important chemical applied in many fields, such as food processing, the chemical industry, and cosmetics. However, the purification of the lactic acid from the broth is still troublesome, when considering the economy. This study first investigated the purification performance of microfiltration (MF) membrane technology for a fermentation broth from kitchen waste. The effect of operation pressure, broth pH, and membrane flushing mode on the membrane filtration performance were investigated. In addition, the change in filtration performance ov

Treatment of Refractory Lactic Acidosis With Thiamine Administration in a Non-alcoholic Patient.

Lactate, or lactic acid, is an end-product of anaerobic metabolism. The build-up of lactate in the body is commonly due to type A lactic acidosis, resulting from an inability to meet the body's oxygen delivery demands. When lactic acidosis persists, other causes need to be ruled out. Here, we describe the case of a 63-year-old female who initially presented with hypoglycemia and was found to have significant lactic acidosis. Her blood sugar levels improved with dextrose supplementation; however, lactic acidosis persisted despite fluid hydration and empiric antibiotics. After excluding other ca

Divergent Synthesis of Natural Benzyl Salicylate and Benzyl Gentisate Glucosides.

Herein is reported the first total synthesis of benzyl salicylate and benzyl gentisate glucosides present in various plant species, in particular the Salix genus, such as Populus balsamifera and P. trichocarpa. The method permits the synthesis of several natural phenolic acid derivatives and their glucosides starting from salicylic or gentisic acid. The divergent approach afforded access to three different acetylated glucosides from a common synthetic intermediate. The key step in the total synthesis of naturally occurring glycosides-the selective deacetylation of the sugar moiety-was achieved

A convenient domino Ferrier rearrangement-intramolecular cyclization for the synthesis of novel benzopyran-fused pyranoquinolines.

The Ferrier rearrangement and the Povarov reaction have proven indispensable tools in carbohydrate chemistry and the synthesis of N-heterocycles, respectively. We hereby report a one-pot cyclization sequence involving the Ferrier and Povarov-like reactions in the synthesis of novel pentacyclic N-heterocycles: benzopyran-fused pyranoquinolines. The reaction entails three component condensation of a glycal with a variety of anilines and 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes under Lewis acid catalysis to yield the title compounds in 4-24 hours of reaction time, in moderate to high yields and excellent diastereo

Potentiometric sensors for the determination of trifluoperazine hydrochloride in pharmaceutical preparations.

Trifluoperazine is widely used in the treatment of psychotic patients for its neuroleptic and antidepressive action. In this study, the construction, evaluation and application of new potentiometric sensors for trifluoperazine hydrochloride (TFPH) are described. The sensing membranes incorporated either ion-pair complexes of the trifluoperazine cation and phosphotungstic acid (PTA) or phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) or sodium tetraphenyl borate (NaTPB) as electroactive materials in poly(vinyl chloride) matrix membrane. The plasticizers used were di-n-butyl phthalate (DBPH) and tri-n-butyl phosphate

An ATP-binding cassette-type cysteine transporter in Campylobacter jejuni inferred from the structure of an extracytoplasmic solute receptor protein.

Campylobacter jejuni is a Gram-negative food-borne pathogen associated with gastroenteritis in humans as well as cases of the autoimmune disease Guillain-Barré syndrome. C. jejuni is asaccharolytic because it lacks an active glycolytic pathway for the use of sugars as a carbon source. This suggests an increased reliance on amino acids as nutrients and indeed the genome sequence of this organism indicates the presence of a number of amino acid uptake systems. Cj0982, also known as CjaA, is a putative extracytoplasmic solute receptor for one such uptake system as well as a major surface antigen

Oxygen radical damage to DNA by rifamycin SV and copper ions.

The hydroquinone moiety of the antibiotic rifamycin SV reacts with molecular oxygen to form reduced oxygen intermediates such as superoxide (O2-.) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The antibiotic semiquinone is also formed. Rifamycin SV in the presence of iron and copper salts can lead to the formation of the highly reactive hydroxyl radical (OH) which degrades the sugar deoxyribose. This damage is substantially inhibited by the enzyme catalase and scavengers of the hydroxyl radical such as formate, mannitol and thiourea. When linear duplex DNA is substituted for deoxyribose only rifamycin SV and

Role of an electrical potential in the coupling of metabolic energy to active transport by membrane vesicles of Escherichia coli.

Membrane vesicles from E. coli can oxidize D-lactate and other substrates and couple respiration to the active transport of sugars and amino acids. The present experiments bear on the nature of the link between respiration and transport. Respiring vesicles were found to accumulate dibenzyldimethylammonium ion, a synthetic lipid-soluble cation that serves as an indicator of an electrical potential. The results suggest that oxidation of D-lactate generates a membrane potential, vesicle interior negative, of the order of -100 mV. In vesicles lacking substrate, an electrical potential was created

Glial adaptations to high-fat diet in the mediobasal hypothalamus and effects on metabolic control.

Obesity represents a global health issue and major socioeconomic burden. As a multifactorial disease, obesity is influenced by genetic and environmental factors, with maladaptive eating habits and high-fat, high-sugar diets (HFD, HFHS) overconsumption being major contributors. While traditionally studied in the context of adipose tissue and peripheral metabolism, the brain is at the centre of this pathology. In the central nervous system, circulating free fatty acids (FAs) are taken up directly, while brain lipoprotein lipases break down triglyceride-rich particles, providing an additional sou

Review on Nutritional Potential of Underutilized Millets as a Miracle Grain.

The current situation, which includes changes in eating habits, an increasing population, and the unrestricted use of natural resources, has resulted in a lack of resources that could be used to provide nourishing food to everyone. Natural plant resources are quickly being depleted, so it is necessary to consider new alternatives. In addition to the staple grains of rice and wheat, many other crops are being consumed that need to be utilized to their full potential and have the potential to replace the staple crops. Millets are one of the most important underutilized crops that have the potent
