Pain and related suffering reduce attention toward others.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that the expression of pain-related suffering may lead to an enhanced focus on oneself and reduced attention toward the external world. This study aimed at investigating whether experimentally induced painrelated suffering may lead persons to withdraw into themselves, causing a reduced focus on external stimuli as reflected by impaired performance in a facial recognition task and heightened perception of internal stimuli measured by interoceptive awareness. METHODS: Thirty-two participants had to recognize different emotional facial expressions (neutral, sad,

Involvement of the dorsal and ventral attention networks in visual attention span.

Visual attention span (VAS), which refers to the window size of multielement parallel processing in a short time, plays an important role in higher-level cognition (e.g., reading) as required by encoding large amounts of information input. However, it is still a matter of debate about the underlying neural mechanism of VAS. In the present study, a modified visual 1-back task was designed by using nonverbal stimuli and nonverbal responses, in which possible influences of target presence and position were considered to identify more pure VAS processing. A task-driven functional magnetic resonanc

On the Role of Bilateral Brain Hypofunction and Abnormal Lateralization of Cortical Information Flow as Neural Underpinnings of Conventional Metaphor Processing Impairment in Schizophrenia: An fMRI and EEG Study.

Figurative language processing (e.g. metaphors) is commonly impaired in schizophrenia. In the present study, we investigated the neural activity and propagation of information within neural circuits related to the figurative speech, as a neural substrate of impaired conventional metaphor processing in schizophrenia. The study included 30 schizophrenia outpatients and 30 healthy controls, all of whom were assessed with a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) punchline-based metaphor comprehension task including literal (neutral), figurative (metaphorical)

Distributed cell assemblies spanning prefrontal cortex and striatum.

Highly synchronous neuronal assembly activity is deemed essential for cognitive brain function. In theory, such synchrony could coordinate multiple brain areas performing complementary processes. However, cell assemblies have been observed only in single structures, typically cortical areas, and little is known about their synchrony with downstream subcortical structures, such as the striatum. Here, we demonstrate distributed cell assemblies activated at high synchrony (∼10 ms) spanning prefrontal cortex and striatum. In addition to including neurons at different brain hierarchical levels, sur

The same, but different: Preserved distractor suppression in old age is implemented through an age-specific reactive ventral fronto-parietal network.

Previous studies have shown age-related impairments in the ability to suppress salient distractors. One possibility is that this is mediated by age-related impairments in the recruitment of the left intraparietal sulcus (Left IPS), which has been shown to mediate the suppression of salient distractors in healthy, young participants. Alternatively, this effect may be due to a shift in engagement from proactive control to reactive control, possibly to compensate for age-related impairments in proactive control. Another possibility is that this is due to changes in the functional specificity of b

Executive functions in homeless young people: Working memory impacts on short-term housing outcomes.

Most homeless young people have experienced multiple adversities, with potential implications for the development of Executive Functions (EFs), higher-order cognitive processes important for adaptation. EFs have been identified as putative contributors to the capacity to exit homelessness, however, little research has investigated EFs in homeless young people. To address gaps in current knowledge, this study compared executive function performance between homeless and housed young people. Relationships between EFs and short-term housing outcomes were also explored. Sixty-eight homeless young p

Keeping your eye on the target: eye-hand coordination in a repetitive Fitts' task.

In a cyclical Fitts' task, hand movements transition from continuous to discrete movements when the Index of Difficulty (ID) increases. Moreover, at high ID (small target), the eyes saccade to and subsequently fixate the targets at every movement, while at low ID (large target) intermittent monitoring is used. By hypothesis, the (periodic) gaze shifts are abandoned for movement times shorter than about 0.350 s due to systemic constraints (i.e., a refractory period and intrinsic latency). If so, the transition in eye and hand movements is independent. To investigate these issues, the present st

Visible and invisible displacement with dynamic visual occlusion in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp).

Anticipating the location of a temporarily obscured target-what Piaget (the construction of reality in the child. Basic Books, New York, 1954) called "object permanence"-is a critical skill, especially in hunters of mobile prey. Previous research with bottlenose dolphins found they could predict the location of a target that had been visibly displaced into an opaque container, but not one that was first placed in an opaque container and then invisibly displaced to another container. We tested whether, by altering the task to involve occlusion rather than containment, these animals could show m

Effects of additional external weight on posture and movement adaptations to fatigue induced by a repetitive pointing task.

Fatigue and additional weight are risk factors of injuries by falls. Posture and trunk movement changes occur with fatigue induced by a repetitive pointing task. These changes facilitate arm movement but they may also jeopardize postural stability. When equilibrium is challenged, e.g. with additional weight, strategies that represent less postural threat could develop with fatigue. Nineteen participants performed two sessions (without, with 20% body weight added load (Load)) of a repetitive pointing task until shoulder fatigue (8 on Borg CR-10). There was no difference in time to fatigue betwe

Guanfacine modulates the emotional biasing of amygdala-prefrontal connectivity for cognitive control.

Functional interactions between amygdala and prefrontal cortex provide a cortical entry point for emotional cues to bias cognitive control. Stimulation of α2 adrenoceptors enhances the prefrontal control functions and blocks the amygdala-dependent encoding of emotional cues. However, the impact of this stimulation on amygdala-prefrontal interactions and the emotional biasing of cognitive control have not been established. We tested the effect of the α2 adrenoceptor agonist guanfacine on psychophysiological interactions of amygdala with prefrontal cortex for the emotional biasing of response ex

Combining findings from gaze and electroencephalography recordings to study timing in a visual tracking task.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and gaze data have traditionally been separated in neurocognitive studies because of the artefacts that even small controlled eye movements produce. Study of gaze control in a visual tracking task provides information about an individual's prospective control. By including gaze events in the EEG analysis, we studied prospective control and its neural correlates during deceleration in a visual tracking task. Adult participants followed with their gaze a small car moving horizontally on a large screen, where the final approach of the car was temporarily occluded, and

Alzheimer's disease therapeutic trials: EU/US Task Force report on recruitment, retention, and methodology.

While we may not be able to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the near future, several drugs presently in trials have shown promise as possible modifiers of disease progression. However, we may not be able to demonstrate efficacy due to issues of recruitment, retention, site-to-site variability, and other methodological issues. It is thus incumbent on the scientific community to find solutions to these problems, particularly as the field moves toward preventing illness or treating the disease in its prodromal stages, where these methodological issues will become even more critical. Does a sensory processing deficit explain counting accuracy on rapid visual sequencing tasks in adults with and without dyslexia?

The experiments conducted aimed to investigate whether reduced accuracy when counting stimuli presented in rapid temporal sequence in adults with dyslexia could be explained by a sensory processing deficit, a general slowing in processing speed or difficulties shifting attention between stimuli. To achieve these aims, the influence of the inter-stimulus interval (ISI), stimulus duration, and sequence length were evaluated in two experiments. In the first that used skilled readers only, significantly more errors were found with presentation of long sequences when the ISI or stimulus durations w

Lesions of reuniens and rhomboid thalamic nuclei impair radial maze win-shift performance.

The reuniens (Re) and rhomboid (Rh) nuclei are major sources of thalamic input to hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex. We compared effects of lesions in ReRh and other parts of the midline-intralaminar complex on tasks affected by lesions in terminal fields innervated by these nuclei, including: visuospatial reaction time (VSRT), a measure of sensory guided responding; serial VSRT, a measure of action sequence learning; and win/shift radial arm maze (RAM) measures of spatial memory. ReRh lesions affected RAM, but not VSRT or serial VSRT performance. The effects of caudal intralaminar lesi

Orienting of spatial attention in Huntington's Disease.

To explore the functioning of spatial attention in Huntington's Disease (HD), 14 HD patients and 14 age-matched controls performed a cued response time (RT) task with peripheral cues. In Experiment 1, cues were not informative about the future target location, thus eliciting a purely exogenous orienting of attention. At short stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA), controls showed an initial facilitation for cued locations, later replaced by a cost (inhibition of return, IOR). Patients had a larger and more persistent validity effect, with delayed IOR, resulting from a larger cost for uncued targets.

Preliminary report: functional MRI of the brain may be the ideal tool for evaluating neuropsychologic and sleep complaints of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: The incidence, pattern, and severity of sleep disturbance and cognitive dysfunction has not been well characterized for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). There is no agreement on the mechanism of the development or resolution of such symptoms, and in no previous study has cerebral activity been functionally assessed and change documented following surgical cure of patients with PHPT. METHODS: We undertook a prospective analysis to obtain pilot data on 6 patients with PHPT. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), formal neuropsychologic (NP) tests, and health-

Biological monitoring of n-hexane exposure in Portuguese shoe manufacturing workers.

Occupational risk of exposure to organic solvents concerned many shoe manufacturing workers. The most common organic solvents found in workplace environments were n-hexane and others hexane isomers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the exposure of shoe manufacturing workers to n-hexane, with 2,5 hexanedione in urine (2,5HD) as a biomarker and to investigate effect in 2,5 HD excretion of the co-exposure to other organic solvents. Post-shift urine samples from workers who performed gluing tasks (n = 45) in five shoe manufacturers were collected, as well as urine samples from a similar numbe

[Retrograde memory after rupture of aneurysms of the anterior communicating artery].

The aim of this study was to investigate deficits of retrograde memory, semantic, autobiographical, and for famous events, associated with prefrontal, cingulate and subcortical lesions resulting from anterior communicating artery rupture. Analyses were performed during the secondary phase post-stroke in 16 patients, and performances were compared to those of an equivalent number of matched control subjects. Semantic investigations revealed a significant deficit in each task using evocation, more especially categorical and literal evocations, and the verbal subtests of the WAIS-R: vocabulary, i

CNV-like potentials on the cortical surface associated with conditioning in head-restrained rats.

Head-restrained rats were conditioned to perform a CNV task: to press a lever in response to an imperative auditory stimulus (S2) given 1.5 sec after a warning stimulus (S1) for a drop of jelly food. With an electrode on the surface of the forelimb cortex, (1) sharp wave complexes immediately after S1 and S2, and (2) a negative slow potential (SP) between S1 and S2, on which early and late components were discernible, were recorded in association with performance of this task. With the electrode at a depth of 2 mm in the same cortical area, the corresponding field potential showed a long-lasti
