Predictors of Loss to Long-Term Follow-up After Shoulder Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Loss to follow-up is among the most important sources of bias in clinical research. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with a failure to complete a 2-year follow-up after shoulder surgery. We hypothesized that older patients would demonstrate higher follow-up rates and that patients who underwent instability surgery would have lower follow-up rates. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 1,028 consecutive patients who underwent shoulder surgery performed by a single surgeon between 2017 and 2022. All patients were contacted by the su

Social Media Support Groups for Youth Nicotine Vaping Cessation: An RCT.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarettes are the most frequently used tobacco product among adolescents and young adults. Over 40% of adolescents who used E-cigarettes tried quitting in 2023, but few programs support them, particularly on social media. The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of E-cigarette cessation support groups on Instagram in an RCT. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 500 participants were randomized to intervention or active control with baseline, 5-week (end of program), and 3- and 6-month follow-up surveys in 2022-2024. SETTING: Healthy volunteers in California were recruited through

Preliminary Examination of an Innovative mHealth-Based Dietary Fiber Intervention to Improve Outcomes in Young Adults With Prediabetes: Protocol for a Single-Arm Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: One in 4 young adults has prediabetes, and improving diet is a key step to lowering the risk of diabetes. Existing standard-of-care diet approaches show short-term efficacy but lack long-term effectiveness, including in young adults. Greater fiber intake is associated with a reduced risk of diabetes; however, fiber is not well targeted using existing interventions. Many young adults may be reluctant to consume fiber given the coexistence with digestible carbohydrates and concerns over gastrointestinal effects. Targeting these factors more explicitly may improve uptake and lower dia

COVID-19 information sources, knowledge, attitude and control practices among community members during the pandemic in Ebonyi state, Nigeria: an analytical cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: After taking a heavy toll on the world population, the COVID-19 pandemic is now an endemic disease of global public health significance that requires long-term application of control measures, which will likely be influenced by people's sources of information, knowledge and attitude about COVID-19 and their previous use of control measures. This study aimed to further the understanding of COVID-19 information sources, knowledge, attitude and control practices and their predictors among community members in Ebonyi state, Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Analytical cros

Using technology for patient-centered care at home after CAR T-cell therapy or stem cell transplant: a prospective feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Febrile neutropenia, neurotoxicity, and cytokine release syndrome are dangerous and damaging side effects seen in more than half of patients with cancer who receive critical chemotherapies or immunotherapies respectively. Early intervention and care can reduce complications, but timely treatment in the outpatient setting is often delayed due to dependency on interval-based, patient-driven self-assessments. Using digital health technologies (DHT) to monitor patients remotely can improve time-to-intervention and health outcomes. Providing follow-up treatment and essential support t

Evaluating the preliminary effectiveness of a video-based intervention for HPV vaccination promotion among college students aged 18-26: study protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Human papillomavirus (HPV) affects nearly 85% of sexually active adults during their lifetime and is responsible for HPV-related cancers in both males and females. Although the HPV vaccine can prevent up to 90% of these cancers, vaccination rates remain low, particularly among college students. Recently, video has emerged as a powerful intervention for shaping public opinion and behaviour toward health-related topics; however, most interventions have primarily focused on adolescents, their parents and females. The primary objective of this study is to develop a video-based interv

Gamification-augmented home-based exercise for peripheral artery disease: Rationale and design of the GAMEPAD Study.

BACKGROUND: Supervised exercise therapy improves walking performance, functional capacity, and quality of life in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, few patients with PAD are enrolled in supervised exercise programs, and there are a number of logistical and financial barriers to their participation. A home-based walking intervention is likely to be more accessible to patients with PAD, but no fully home-based walking program has demonstrated efficacy. Concepts from behavioral economics have been used to design scalable interventions that increase daily physical activity in

Development and feasibility testing of a time-restricted eating intervention for women living with overweight/obesity and HIV in a resource-limited setting of South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are amongst the leading causes of death in South Africa. The preferred first-line anti-retroviral treatment contains dolutegravir (DTG), shown to increase body weight, may compound the already high rates of obesity and associated risk for T2D. South Africa has widespread food insecurity, making traditional dietary strategies difficult to implement. Time-restricted eating (TRE) may be an appropriate intervention in resource-limited communities. METHODS: This article outlines the development and feasibility testing of a TR

A virtual pilot optimization trial for African American/Black and Latino persons with non-suppressed HIV viral load grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual and low-touch behavioral interventions are needed for African American/Black and Latino persons living with HIV (PLWH) with barriers to HIV viral suppression, particularly during COVID-19. Guided by the multiphase optimization strategy, we explored three components for PLWH without viral suppression, grounded in motivational interviewing and behavioral economics: (1) motivational interviewing counseling, (2) 21-weeks of automated text messages and quiz questions about HIV management, and (3) financial rewards for viral suppression (lottery prize vs. fixed compensation).

Use of an app-based exercise therapy program including cognitive-behavioral techniques for the management of intermittent claudication.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice guidelines recommend supervised exercise therapy (SET) as first-line therapy for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and intermittent claudication (IC). The Society for Vascular Surgery Appropriate Use Criteria for IC deems excercise therapy (ET) as appropriate for all patients with IC. However, compliance with recommendations for the use of ET is often poor owing to the lack of availability, patient travel requirements, and cost. Results of home-based ET programs have been mixed with a trend toward improved results with more frequent patient engagement.

Skin cancer prevention: knowledge and perceptions of a nationwide sample of youth.

Context: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States and incidence continues to rise. The leading risk factor for skin cancer is sun exposure in adolescence. Given this, sun protection in young adults is an effective way to reduce the occurrence of skin cancer. The goal of this study is to identify knowledge, behaviors, and barriers among young adults toward the use of sunscreen. Primary care physicians interact with a large number of young adults and have the ideal opportunity to counsel this population. Objective: To identify youths' knowledge and experiences with sun

Validation of Prediction Rules for Computed Tomography Use in Children With Blunt Abdominal or Blunt Head Trauma: Protocol for a Prospective Multicenter Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and intra-abdominal injuries (IAIs) are 2 leading causes of traumatic death and disability in children. To avoid missed or delayed diagnoses leading to increased morbidity, computed tomography (CT) is used liberally. However, the overuse of CT leads to inefficient care and radiation-induced malignancies. Therefore, to maximize precision and minimize the overuse of CT, the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) previously derived clinical prediction rules for identifying children at high risk and very low risk for IAIs undergoing a

A Technology-Based Intervention Among Young Men Who Have Sex With Men and Nonbinary People (The Conectad@s Project): Protocol for A Vanguard Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: In many parts of the world, including Brazil, uptake for biomedical interventions has been insufficient to reverse the HIV epidemic among key populations at high risk for HIV, including men who have sex with men. Young MSM (YMSM), particularly Black YMSM, have high HIV incidence, low viral suppression, and low preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake and adherence. Therefore, novel approaches to increase the HIV biomedical interventions uptake by YMSM are urgently needed. OBJECTIVE: We describe the Conectad@s Project, which aims to: (1) estimate the prevalence and incidence of HIV an

Low PrEP adherence despite high retention among transgender women in Brazil: the PrEParadas study.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake, retention, and adherence and predictors of study non-attendance and low PrEP adherence in a Brazilian trans-specific 48-week study (PrEParadas). METHODS: We enrolled transgender women (TGW) engaging in high-risk sexual behaviours between August 2017 and December 2018. PrEP adherence was based on tenofovir diphosphate concentrations in dried blood spots (DBS). We used random effects logistic regression models and ordinal models to estimate the odds of having a missed visit and of low PrEP adherence, respectiv

COVID-19 Pandemic: Demographic Predictors of Self-Isolation or Self-Quarantine and Impact of Isolation and Quarantine on Perceived Stress, Anxiety, and Depression.

Introduction: With the sudden onset and global dispersal of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, many nations including Canada attempted to reduce spread of the resultant COVID-19 syndrome with self-isolation and quarantine, while seeking a cure or vaccine for this disease. Understanding impacts of self-isolation and self-quarantine on stress, anxiety, and depression will help us to mitigate these issues through appropriate development of mental health services. Methods: The sample was drawn from individuals who self-subscribed to Text4Hope, a service that delivers text messages based on a cognitive behavior
