Tissue Preservation Using Socket-Shield Technique in Lower Molar Site: A Proof of Principle Report.

Background/Objectives: The socket-shield technique (SST) was developed to preserve the facial/buccal portion of a tooth root to prevent post-extraction ridge resorption. It has gained attention for use in anterior implant sites, but its application in posterior sites remains unexplored. The aim of this case report was to report a proof-of-principle case using SST in a lower molar site and evaluate its effectiveness in preserving tissues. Methods: A 34-year-old non-smoking patient with a non-restorable mandibular first molar (tooth #36) underwent immediate implant placement with the SST. The to

The "Prosthetic Orthodontic Approach": An Application of the Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique Protocol.

In this study, three cases involving patients who required multidisciplinary treatment for the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of the maxillary or mandibular arch are described. In particular, an indication for preprosthetic orthodontic treatment, such as orthodontic extrusion, tooth realignment, correction of malocclusion, and diastemata closure, was present in all cases. Preprosthetic orthodontic treatment to resolve these issues before the restorative procedures was proposed; however, all patients refused preprosthetic orthodontic treatment. Thus, to restore aesthetics and function,

Comparison of hard tissue interrelationships at the cervical region of teeth based on tooth type and gender difference.

CONTEXT: Cementoenamel junction (CEJ) represents the anatomic limit between the crown and root surface. With advancing age and continuous eruption, this area becomes exposed in the oral media. Consequently, CEJ will be subjected to the action of various physical and chemical factors that might alter its morphology, with the cementum being affected in most cases. AIM: To identify the frequency of hard tissue interrelationships present at the CEJ in relation to different genders, positions and aspects of tooth using a light microscope. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cervical regions of 80 permanen

An endodontic-periodontal lesion with primary periodontal disease: a case report on its bacterial profile.

The microflora in the periodontal pockets can affect the dental pulp and cause endodontic-periodontal lesions or retrograde pulpitis. Here we report an endodontic-periodontal lesion together with its bacterial profile. The lesion occurred in the maxillary right first molar of a 40-year-old woman who presented at our hospital complaining of a violent toothache since the previous night. Clinically, the tooth was caries-free and an electric pulp test showed it to be vital. The tooth showed signs of advanced periodontitis and the periodontal pocket was deep, reaching the apex of the palatal root.

Dental eruption chronology in degus (Octodon degus).

The purpose of this study was to gain information concerning chronology of postnatal dental eruption in degus (Octodon degu). Specific findings pertain to the estimation of postnatal age at tooth emergence through the gingiva and to the age when a particular tooth is in functional occlusion. Fifty newborn degu pups were included in this study. The oral cavity endoscopy was carried out under isoflurane anesthesia in all animals 3 to 4 and 24-hours after birth, then at 1-day intervals until the age of 40-days, and subsequently at 2-day intervals until 75-days of age. Tooth emergence was consider

Directions of orthodontic tooth movements associated with external apical root resorption of the maxillary central incisor.

External apical root resorption is a multifactorial problem encountered in all disciplines of dentistry, but it is most commonly seen in cases treated orthodontically. Specific tooth movements that are most likely to exacerbate external apical root resorption are poorly understood. Purpose of the present investigation was twofold: (1) to quantify apical and incisal movements of the maxillary central incisor in the sagittal and vertical planes from cephalograms and (2) to use stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses to see which tooth movements and skeletodental relationships are most p

Ten-year-plus follow-up study on coronectomy of the mandibular third molar.

In the management of the lower third molars, coronectomy has gained popularity in recent years due to its effectiveness in preventing neurosensory deficits, particularly when the tooth is in close proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). This long-term prospective study was performed to evaluate the outcomes of patients who presented for mandibular third molar extraction and underwent coronectomy, with a minimum follow-up of 10 years. A total of 362 coronectomies performed on 277 patients (165 female, 112 male) were included. Fifty-five of the 362 coronectomy cases followed up for ≥10 y

Periodontal considerations in veneer cases.

Porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive technique to enhance patients' smiles. A crucial component in these cases is the supporting periodontal apparatus and its interaction with the restorations. This article addresses basic concepts such as biologic width, altered eruption patterns, appropriate gingival contouring and smile design to give practitioners the tools to diagnose, evaluate and treat cases successfully and predictably.

Coronectomy in patients with high risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury diagnosed by computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested coronectomy as an alternative procedure to decrease the risk of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury when there are high-risk findings observed on panoramic radiographs. However, the exact relation between the inferior alveolar canal and the roots is not obvious on 2-dimensional imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the success of coronectomy by comparing it with conventional extraction for the treatment of the patients who had clear IAN injury risks that were determined on 3 dimensions by computed tomography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundred

Simultaneous occurrence of unusual odontodysplasia and oligodontia in the permanent dentition: report of a case.

Odontodysplasia is an uncommon clinicopathological condition with a variety of expressions. Although it is generally recognized as a localized disorder of dental tissue, its aetiology has not yet been well explained. In the present case, odontodysplasia with oligodontia in the permanent dentition is reported. The patient was in good health with normal stature and no other physical abnormalities. His parents and siblings were dentally and medically normal. The primary teeth appeared to be normal except for the primary second molars, where the enamel was malformed. However, the permanent incisor

Cone-beam CT-guided root uprighting of a severely angulated impacted maxillary canine using a boot loop and micro-screw: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic traction of impacted maxillary canines remains a clinical challenge, particularly when the tooth is severely angulated. Conventional force application to the crown may increase the risk of damage to adjacent roots due to insufficient control of root positioning. This case demonstrates the use of a boot loop in combination with a micro-screw to upright the canine root within the alveolar bone before potential root contact. Treatment alternatives and biomechanics are discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.Diagnosis and treatment plan:A boy aged 14 ye

Accelerated healing of endodontically treated teeth with a periapical lesion as a result of orthodontic extrusion: evaluation and rationale.

Resolution of a periapical periodontal lesion as determined by radiographic examination may take a year or longer. Orthodontic movement is known to have a positive effect on the bone topography and morphology. The literature presents no information about the effect of orthodontic movement on the rate of periapical endodontic healing following a root canal treatment. The aim of this report was to present the use of orthodontic root extrusion in cases with a periapical lesion, where other options are ruled out. Three case reports involving endodontically treated teeth with a periapical lesion a
