Transesophageal echocardiography and monitoring applications.

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a widely used cardiac imaging technique that provides the clinician with a view of the heart as seen from the esophagus or stomach. Rapid advances in TEE transducer technology, coupled with the low-risk, semi-invasive nature of the procedure, have fueled its use for cardiac monitoring of surgical and critical care patients, in addition to diagnostic imaging. Many recent research studies have demonstrated the utility of TEE for direct, real-time evaluation of global and regional left ventricular function not achievable with current competing technologie

Integrative physiological study of radiation-induced lung injury: effects on cardiac function and kidney integrity.

Radiotherapy is used to treat tumors in the chest, but can cause radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) in 5%-50% of patients. The study investigated changes in lung and heart function and kidney integrity in a model of RILI. Primary outcome was lung compliance at 12 wk. Secondary outcomes included analysis of ventilatory effort, cardiovascular function, and renal integrity. About 30 adult Wistar rats (8-10 wk old, 390 ± 22 g) were randomized into two groups: one received 15 Gray (Gy) of irradiation to the right lung radiation (RLR group, n = 20), whereas control group (CTRL group, n = 10) recei

Verification and spatial mapping of TRPV1 and TRPV4 expression in the embryonic and adult mouse lens.

The transient receptor protein vanilloid channels, TRPV1 and TRPV4, have recently been shown to be mechanosensors in the ocular lens that act to transduce physical changes in lens volume and internal hydrostatic pressure into the activation of signalling pathways in lens epithelial cells. These pathways in turn regulate ion and water transport to ensure that the optical properties of the lens remain constant. Despite the functional evidence that implicate the roles of TRPV1 and TRPV4 in the lens, their respective cellular expression patterns in the different regions of the lens has to date not

Intervertebral disc degeneration can predispose to anterior vertebral fractures in the thoracolumbar spine.

UNLABELLED: Mechanical experiments on cadaveric thoracolumbar spine specimens showed that intervertebral disc degeneration was associated with reduced loading of the anterior vertebral body in upright postures. Reduced load bearing corresponded to locally reduced BMD and inferior trabecular architecture as measured by histomorphometry. Flexed postures concentrated loading on the weakened anterior vertebral body, leading to compressive failure at reduced load. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporotic fractures are usually attributed to age-related hormonal changes and inactivity. However, why should the ant

Development of Visually Indistinguishable Acoustic Coupling Pads for Double-Blind Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation Studies.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging noninvasive neuromodulation modality with the ability to target deep brain structures with high spatial precision. Despite its promise, rigorous evaluation of its efficacy is limited by the absence of reliable, fully double-blind sham methodologies. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a pair of visually and mechanically indistinguishable acoustic coupling pads that enable true double-blind tFUS neuromodulation studies by providing either efficient ultrasound transmission or robust ultrasound blocking without altering participant

Mas receptor: a potential strategy in the management of ischemic cardiovascular diseases.

MasR is a critical element in the RAS accessory pathway that protects the heart against myocardial infarction, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and pathological remodeling by counteracting the effects of AT1R. This receptor is mainly stimulated by Ang 1-7, which is a bioactive metabolite of the angiotensin produced by ACE2. MasR activation attenuates ischemia-related myocardial damage by facilitating vasorelaxation, improving cell metabolism, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, inhibiting thrombosis, and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaque. It also prevents pathological cardiac remodeling b

Regulation of blood pressure and renal electrolyte balance by Cullin-RING ligases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Efforts to explore the pathogenic mechanisms underlying hereditary hypertension caused by a single gene mutation have brought about conceptual advances in our understanding of blood pressure regulation. We here discuss a novel pathogenic mechanism underlying the hereditary hypertensive disease pseudohypoaldosteronism type II (PHAII), caused by mutations in three different genes encoding for Cullin-3, Kelch-like protein 3 (KLHL3), and with-no-lysine kinases (WNKs). RECENT FINDINGS: In 2001, mutations in genes encoding for WNKs were identified as being responsible for PHAII.

Cardiac-specific activation of angiotensin II type 1 receptor-associated protein completely suppresses cardiac hypertrophy in chronic angiotensin II-infused mice.

We cloned a novel molecule interacting with angiotensin II type 1 receptor, which we named ATRAP (for angiotensin II type 1 receptor-associated protein). Previous in vitro studies showed that ATRAP significantly promotes constitutive internalization of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor and further attenuates angiotensin II-mediated hypertrophic responses in cardiomyocytes. The present study was designed to investigate the putative functional role of ATRAP in cardiac hypertrophy by angiotensin II infusion in vivo. We first examined the effect of angiotensin II infusion on endogenous ATRAP expr

A prospective study on ultrasound-guided compression therapy or thrombin injection for treatment of iatrogenic false aneurysms in patients receiving full-dose anti-platelet therapy.

BACKGROUND: False aneurysms (FA) develop at the puncture site in up to 6% of percutaneous cardiovascular procedures. Previous management included surgery or manual compression. Recently, selective injection of thrombin has been proposed as an alternative. However, there has been no direct comparison of thrombin injection to manual compression. AIM: To study the effectiveness of manual compression compared to that of thrombin injection in patients with false aneurysms on full-dose aspirin and clopidogrel. METHODS AND PROTOCOL: All patients with a clinically suspected FA after percutaneous inva

[The effect of muscle relaxants on masseter tone. An experimental study in an MH-susceptible swine model].

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) may occur, when a genetically predisposed individual or pig (MHS) is exposed to triggering agents. The increase in free, ionized sarcoplasmic calcium inducing the vicious circle of MH is believed to result from calcium-induced release with volatile anaesthetics, and from depolarization-induced calcium release with succinylcholine (SCH). The administration of SCH to susceptible humans or pigs frequently produces an increase in masticatory muscle tone. This hitherto ill-defined phenomenon is referred to as "masseter spasm" (MS). We have attempted to elucidate the path

SWAVE 2.0 Imaging of Placental Elasticity and Viscosity: Potential Biomarkers for Placenta-Mediated Disease Detection.

Pregnancy complications such as pre-eclampsia (PE) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) are associated with structural and functional changes in the placenta. Different elastography techniques with an ability to assess the mechanical properties of tissue can identify and monitor the pathological state of the placenta. Currently available elastography techniques have been used with promising results to detect placenta abnormalities; however, limitations include inadequate measurement depth and safety concerns from high negative pressure pulses. Previously, we described a shear wave absolu

β-Arrestin-Biased Allosteric Modulator Potentiates Carvedilol-Stimulated β Adrenergic Receptor Cardioprotection.

β 1 adrenergic receptors (β 1ARs) are central regulators of cardiac function and a drug target for cardiac disease. As a member of the G protein-coupled receptor family, β 1ARs activate cellular signaling by primarily coupling to Gs proteins to activate adenylyl cyclase, cAMP-dependent pathways, and the multifunctional adaptor-transducer protein β-arrestin. Carvedilol, a traditional β-blocker widely used in treating high blood pressure and heart failure by blocking β adrenergic receptor-mediated G protein activation, can selectively stimulate Gs-independent β-arrestin signaling of β adrenergic

Ultra-sensitive gas phase detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene by non-covalently functionalized graphene field effect transistors.

The high energy density (4.2 MJ kg-1) and low vapour pressure (7.2 × 10-9 atm) of chemical explosives such as TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) pose a grave security risk demanding immediate attention. Detection of such hazardous and highly challenging chemicals demands specific, ultra-sensitive and rapid detection platforms that can concomitantly transduce the signal as an electrical readout. Although chemo-sensitive strategies have been investigated, the majority of them are restricted to detecting TNT from solutions and are therefore not implementable in real-time, on-field situations. Addressing

Protein Kinase C Downregulation Enhanced Extracellular Ca2+-Induced Relaxation of Isolated Mesenteric Arteries from Aged Dahl Salt-Sensitive Rats.

The Ca2+-sensing receptor (CaSR) detects small changes in extracellular calcium (Ca2+ e) concentration ([Ca2+]e) and transduces the signal into modulation of various signaling pathways. Ca2+-induced relaxation of isolated phenylephrine-contracted mesenteric arteries is mediated by the CaSR of the perivascular nerve. Elucidation of the regulatory mechanisms involved in vascular CaSR signaling may provide insights into the physiologic functions of the receptor and identify targets for the development of new treatments for cardiovascular pathologies such as hypertension. Protein kinase Cα (PKCα)
