Synesthesia in children with difficulties in written language learning.

We tested whether the acquisition of grapheme-color synesthesia during childhood is related to difficulties in written language learning by measuring whether it is more frequent in 79 children receiving speech and language therapy for such difficulties than in the general population of children (1.3%). By using criteria as similar as possible to those used in the reference study (Simner et al., 2009), we did not identify any synesthete (Bayesian 95% credible interval [0, 4.5]% for a flat prior). The odds of the null model (no difference between 0/79 and 1.3%) over alternative models is 28 (Bay

[On Sylvia Plath's Personality].

In this early study, written in 1985, I examined six of the most important personality traits of Sylvia Plath, the poet and writer (1). Sylvia oscillated between positions of dependency and independence; she was characterised by sexual inhibition and promiscuity, writer's block and an explosion of writing, achievement con- straint and liberation from the constraint, emotional dependence and independence. Paradoxically, she committed suicide when far more things (children, productive creative period, publication of her novel) tied her to life than was the case before her first suicide attempt (…

Sketch and Speak: An Expository Intervention Using Note-Taking and Oral Practice for Children With Language-Related Learning Disabilities.

Purpose This preliminary study investigated an intervention procedure employing 2 types of note-taking and oral practice to improve expository reporting skills. Procedure Forty-four 4th to 6th graders with language-related learning disabilities from 9 schools were assigned to treatment or control conditions that were balanced for grade, oral language, and other features. The treatment condition received 6 30-min individual or pair sessions from the school of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Treatment involved reducing statements from grade-level science articles into concise ideas, recordi

Reading Disabilities in Adolescents and Adults.

PURPOSE: Reading skills continue to develop into adolescence and adulthood. Difficulties in reading have lifelong repercussions. Many speech-language pathologists who work with older individuals in the school setting face significant issues, including those mandated by recent changes in legislation. Theoretical topics related to reading development and disorders include the variety of orthographic systems across languages and the ways in which adults who are literate in an alphabetic orthographic system experience changes to their spoken and written language processing. In addition, older read

James Parkinson's Chimera: syndrome or disease?

It is 200 years since James Parkinson published An Essay on the Shaking Palsy. While his monograph continues to be acclaimed for its precedence and clarity of description, what is often overlooked is the originality of Parkinson's ideas. Here we show that he appreciated the weakness of the systematic 18th century nosologies, which presupposed that medical species, the building blocks of these Linnaean taxonomic schemes, were as distinct as plant and animal species; and that Parkinson made a conceptual leap about combinations of clinical phenomena in recurring patterns, now recognised to be one

Childhood predictors of written expression in late adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is the second most prevalent genetic syndrome and has a characteristic academic and behavioural phenotype. The primary objective of the current study was to examine the childhood predictors of written expression achievement in adolescents with 22q11DS. Written expression is an important skill that can impact an individual's overall academic performance, potentially resulting in increased levels of stress and exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms. METHODS: A total of 119 participants were included in this study. Sixty-nine late adolescents with 22

The Role of Morphological and Phonological Awareness in the Early Development of Word Spelling and Reading in Typically Developing and Disabled Arabic Readers.

The study is a cross-sectional developmental investigation of morphological and phonological awareness in word spelling and reading in Arabic in reading-accuracy disabled (RD) children and in age-matched typically developing (TR) controls in grades 1-4 (N = 160). Morphological awareness tasks targeted the root and word pattern derivational system of Arabic, in both the oral and the written modalities. Phonological awareness employed a variety of orally administered segmentation and deletion tasks. The results demonstrated early deficits in morphological awareness, besides deficits in phonologi

Evidence of dissociative amnesia in science and literature: culture-bound approaches to trauma in Pope, Poliakoff, Parker, Boynes, and Hudson (2007).

The current culture of traumatic stress studies includes research that identifies the ways in which stress and trauma impair learning and memory in both humans and animals. Yet it also contains health professionals who argue that individuals cannot forget traumatic events. Many accounts present differences among these positions as a legitimate debate despite the substantial forensic, survey, and neurological evidence that both demonstrates the capacity for people to exhibit impaired memory for trauma and highlights specific mechanisms. In a recent article, H. G. Pope, M. B. Poliakoff, M. P. Pa

Mozart in the neurological department - who has the tic?

In Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's medical history quite an impressive list of possible diseases has been collected. In the 1980s the diagnosis of Tourette's syndrome was added to the list. Evidence of vocal tics was derived from the scatological expressions found in the letters of Mozart. In addition there are a few contemporary reports on striking motor behavior suggesting the existence of motor tics. However, in a critical light the arguments for the diagnosis are quite weak. Most problematic is the concept that involuntary vocal utterances are transferred to the written form. One would expect to

[Possible definitions and subsequent incidence of circumscribed reading and spelling disorders--theoretical considerations and empirical findings in a representative sample of young adults].

OBJECTIVES: With reference to an epidemiological sample of adolescents and young adults the impact of different models on the number of children classified as having specific reading and spelling problems is investigated. METHODS: Using the same set of data, the effects of alternative measurement models, definitions and methodological procedures on the prevalence of specific spelling problems are shown. The virtual consequences of various norm-oriented definitions of cases are discussed with reference to external empirical criteria. RESULTS: In the present study case definitions of specific

Automatic word processing: a new forum for hypnotic expression.

Automatic word processing, a form of dissociation utilizing hypnosis and computer technology, was developed to provide patients a forum for hypnotic expression with unique features. Using automatic word processing, the six patients in this report were able to express themselves extensively, edit their responses to queries, and even write poetry while doing hypnosis. Automatic word processing can be used with some patients to gain important insights and therapeutic successes that might not be achieved as easily by other means. Because this is a new technique, much of its potential remains to be

A review of learning strategies for adults with learning disabilities preparing for the GED exam.

Although there is a growing body of information, materials, and instructional strategies for adults with learning disabilities receiving remedial reading instruction, the same is not available for other areas of Adult Basic Education, including remedial math, sixth-through eight-grade-level pre-GED basic skills, and secondary subject areas in the GED curriculum. This review presents possibilities for consideration in developing instructional and testing strategies for GED students with learning disabilities. These strategies should be applicable to traditional academic content areas, cost effe

Postal self-exposure treatment of recurrent nightmares.

BACKGROUND: Case reports suggest that recurrent nightmares are alleviated by behavioural treatment. We have administered such treatment to a client by post. METHOD: The frequency of nightmares was recorded by the client before and during treatment, and at one and six months follow-up. Nightmare problem and target scales, and treatment expectation were recorded at the end of each period. Treatment was by rehearsal relief, self-administered using written instructions. RESULTS: A reduction in nightmare frequency from 5.5 per week in the baseline period to an average of one per week resulted aft
