BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a potentially life-threatening acquired meat allergy associated with tick bites. The allergen Galactose-α-1,3-Galactose is antigenically similar to the B blood group antigen. B blood group status offers some protection against development of the allergy. Although not preferred practice, transfusion of plasma and platelets from group B donors is believed to be safe for group O recipients.

The JSA and the Japanese Society of Blood Transfusion and Cell Therapy established "Guidelines for Action Against Intraoperative Critical Hemorrhage" in 2007. This guideline shows practical strategies for managing life-threatening hemorrhage. From 2007 to 2009, we conducted the annual survey with transfusion services of 384 hospitals accredited by the JSA. From the results of these surveys, we proposed some new strategies for managing life-threatening hemorrhage as follows: 1) It is necessary to establish a documentation of institutional procedures for urgent transfusion practices including an

Benchmarking of survival following Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) is very useful in the field of transplant medicine. It has been reported that decreased survival rates after HSCT may be affected by the ABO mismatch in some cases. In this study, we aim to assess this relationship in a Tunisian cohort of adult patients who have received HSCT from HLA genoidentical related donors. A total of 147 patients and their 147 respective related donors, were retrospectively analyzed in this study. HLA and ABO antigens typing was performed according to established routine methods. Overall

We herein report a case of long-lasting pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) after major ABO-incompatible allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient needed red blood cell (RBC) transfusion every week after SCT. On day 236, he was diagnosed with odontogenic infection, and the serum levels of Interleukin (IL)-6 were elevated to 12.1 pg/mL. After that, the numbers of reticulocyte rapidly began to increase, and RBC support was not needed from day 251. No standard care for PRCA following SCT has been established. The IL-6 elevation caused by the odontogenic inf

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible (ABOi) infant heart transplantation results in B-cell tolerance to graft A/B antigens, confirming human susceptibility to acquired immunologic or "neonatal" tolerance as described originally in murine models. Starting with this clinical observation, we sought to model neonatal ABOi organ transplantation to allow mechanistic studies of tolerance.
METHODS: Plasma anti-A/B antibodies were measured over time in piglets to establish developmental antibody kinetics. Blood group O piglets received kidney allografts from group A (AO-incompatible) or group O (AO-compatible

UNLABELLED: Living donor kidney exchange has become an efficient solution for recipients with incompatible donors. Here we describe the fate of all patients that were enrolled in our program during 2004-2010.
METHODS: Data on registration, computerized matching, cross matching, and transplantations within or outside the program were collected.
RESULTS: Between January 2004 and December 2010, 422 pairs were registered. To create new combinations a match procedure was run 28 times with a median input of 14 (7-22) new pairs and a median of 55 (16-92) participating pairs. Matches were found for

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2007eng
Although the effectiveness of rituximab has been reported in ABO blood group (ABO)-incompatible (ABO-I) organ transplantation, the protocol is not yet established. We studied the impact of the timing of rituximab prophylaxis and the humoral immune response of patients undergoing ABO-I living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), focusing on clinicopathological findings and the B-cell subset. From July 2003 to December 2005, 30 adult patients were treated with hepatic artery infusion (HAI) protocol without splenectomy for ABO-I LDLT. A total of 17 patients were treated only with HAI (no prophylax

BACKGROUND: Although living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) was established as a treatment for end-stage liver disease in Japan, the indication for LDLT across an ABO-incompatible barrier remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the role of plasmapheresis in incompatible LDLT.
METHODS: Eleven adult patients (seven men and four women) who underwent incompatible LDLT were enrolled in this study. Of these three patients had hepatocellular carcinoma, three chronic hepatitis C, one Wilson's disease, one autoimmune hepatitis, one chronic hepatitis B, one hemochromatosis,

From June 1982 to November 1989, 39 ABO-incompatible living kidney transplants were performed in 38 recipients. Pretransplant therapies included platelets donor transfusion (21/39), 2 to 5 plasmapheresis sessions (39/39), cyclosporin A with or without azathioprine (33/39) along with polyclonal Abs (36/39) and splenectomy at the time of transplantation (37/39). The last patient who received 2 ABO-incompatible transplants was previously splenectomized (end-stage renal failure due to a cortical necrosis following a traumatic spleen rupture). Three other patients who did not undergo a splenectomy

Type 1 diabetes is associated with autoimmunity against pancreatic beta cells. ABO incompatibility is associated with ABO immunization during pregnancy. Type 1 diabetes is associated with certain HLA DR and DQ haplotypes. The mechanism by which blood group incompatibility is associated with the risk of type 1 diabetes is not known. We propose that certain HLA alleles contribute to the development of both type 1 diabetes and ABO blood group incompatibility. We studied 57 children with ABO blood group incompatibility, 118 children with type 1 diabetes, and 98 age- and sex-matched unrelated healt

Between February 1971 and October 1980, 34 patients with leukemia or aplastic anemia received bone marrow transplants from HLA-identical siblings whose lymphocytes did not react in a mixed leukocyte culture. The donors of 10 patients were ABO-incompatible, and for five pairs the ABO incompatibility was major. Plasma exchanges followed by a red blood cell exchange transfusion reduced the anti-A titres to 1:4 or less in these patients. The ABO incompatibility had no adverse effect on the results of marrow transplantation. Twenty-two patients, including 16 of the 20 who received their transplant

In a series of 4998 cadaver kidney transplants the extent of HLA matching correlated with transplant outcome in patients with blood-groups other than O (non-O) but not in patients of blood-group O. The high survival-rate of poorly matched kidneys in O recipients was responsible for the lack of correlation between HLA matching and graft survival in these patients. Survival-rates of transplants with 4 HLA mismatches were 52 +/- 3% at one year in 222 O-to-O grafts compared with 24 +/- 5% in 65 B-to-B grafts (P less than 0.0001). In 2827 non-O patients, there was a strong correlation between HLA m

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) infection, commonly asymptomatic, may cause mild West Nile fever (WNF) or potentially fatal neuroinvasive disease (WNND). An outbreak of 262 cases of the new Lineage 2 strain in Greece in 2010 continued with high mortality (17%) in WNND. The objective was to investigate ABO, D, and Lewis blood groups, as well as HLA Class I and Class II alleles, in relation to WNV Lineage 2 disease morbidity.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cohort of 132 Greek WNV cases in 2010 to 2013 (65% male; mean age 64 years; 41% WNF, 59% WNND) was compared to 51,339 healthy WNV-negative bl

We retrospectively analyzed transfusion requirements within the first 100 d among allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients with haematological malignancies given either myeloablative (n = 1353) or nonmyeloablative conditioning (n = 503). We confirmed that myeloablative recipients required more platelet and red blood cell (RBC) transfusions than nonmyeloablative recipients (P < 0.0001 for both). Myeloablative patients given peripheral blood stem cells required less platelet transfusions (P < 0.0001) than those given marrow while RBC transfusion requirements did not differ
