Membrane-based air humidification-dehumidification desalination (MHDD) technology is an effective way to ease fresh water shortage owing to its excellent salt rejection. However, industrial applications pose higher requirements on membrane life expectancy. Membrane cleaning is considered as a potentially sustainable approach to prolong the operation time. Traditional cleaning methods are limited due to the poor recovery efficiency and the introduction of impurities. Here, a novel solar-assisted-self-healing N-doped MXene quantum dots (NMQDs)/ZnO-based membrane was fabricated to repair the wate

Heat-induced gel-assisted desalination could efficiently and inexpensively remove salt from salted egg whites. However, it was at the expense of the excellent foaming properties of egg whites, caused by the denaturation and aggregation of proteins during heating treatment. Hence, in this current work, the enzymatic treatment was used to re-endow duck egg white nanogels (DEWN) with outstanding foaming properties. We found that low levels of hydrolysis (DH = 2.27 %) could dramatically improve the foaming capability (FC), reaching >200 %, which also enhanced the foaming stability (FS). As the hyd

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), often caused by smoking, is a chronic lung disease with systemic manifestations including metabolic comorbidities. This study investigates adaptive and pathological alterations in adipose and skeletal muscle tissue following cigarette smoke exposure using in vivo and in vitro models. Mice were exposed to cigarette smoke or air for 72 days and the pre-adipose cell line 3T3-L1 was utilized as an in vitro model. Cigarette smoke exposure decreased body weight, and the proportional loss in fat mass was more pronounced than the lean mass loss. Cigarette

Most cases of mesothelioma are known to result from exposure to asbestos fibers in the environment or occupational ambient air. The following questions regarding asbestos toxicity remain partially unanswered: (i) why asbestos entering the alveoli during respiration exerts toxicity in the pleura; and (ii) how asbestos causes mesothelioma, even though human mesothelial cells are easily killed upon exposure to asbestos. As for the latter question, it is now thought that the frustrated phagocytosis of asbestos fibers by macrophages prolongs inflammatory responses and gives rise to a "mutagenic mic

A 70-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a 3-week history of prolonged fever, asthenia and anorexia, denying other symptoms. Physical examination was unremarkable and the patient admitted for further investigation. Initial laboratory testing showed leucocytosis, elevated C-reactive protein and cholestasis, without hyperbilirubinemia or cytolysis. Abdominal ultrasonography found no abnormalities. Viral serologies, autoimmune tests and blood cultures were collected for further investigation of causes of prolonged fever with hepatic involvement. After two days, Citrobacter k

Since December 2019, a new type of acute respiratory disease caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) appeared to Wuhan, China. Currently, positive of virus nucleic acid in respiratory or blood samples is the gold standard for the diagnosis of the disease, but the nucleic acid test may be false negative. Chest CT examination plays an important role in diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia. The clinical manifestations, laboratory examination, and chest CT characteristics of 3 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia were reported. The mainly clinical manifestation of the 3 patients was fever. BACKGROUND: Distinct tube size is critical for the function of human tubular organs such as the lung, vascular system, and kidney. Aberrant tube sizes can lead to devastating human illnesses, including polycystic kidney disease. The Drosophila trachea provides a premier genetic system to investigate the fundamental mechanisms that regulate tube size.
RESULTS: Here we describe the function of a novel gene, apnoia, in tube-size regulation. apn encodes an apical membrane protein, Apnoia (Apn), with three helical transmembrane domains. Loss-of-function apn mutants show shorter-tube and air-fillin

The generation of transgenic chickens is of both biomedical and agricultural significance, and recently chicken transgenesis technology has been greatly advanced. However, major issues still exist in the efficient production of transgenic chickens. This study was designed to optimize the production of enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP)-transgenic broilers, including egg windowing at the blunt end (air cell) of egg, and the direct transfection of circulating primordial germ cells by microinjection of the Tol2 plasmid-liposome complex into the early embryonic dorsal aorta. For egg window

UNLABELLED: Nitrofurantoin-induced diffuse lung toxicity is well documented in the literature but is often misdiagnosed. We describe an 82-year-old female medicated with nitrofurantoin for the previous 2 years who was admitted for dyspnoea, dry cough and fatigue for 4 months. She was febrile and tachypnoeic and she presented with bilateral basal crackles, hypoxaemic respiratory failure and slightly elevated C-reactive protein levels. A chest radiograph showed bilateral air-space consolidation and interstitial infiltrates and the high-resolution computed tomography scan was evocative of a peril

At the lung lining innate defenses protect our lungs against inhaled fungal cells that could pose a threat to our health. These defenses are comprised of mucociliary clearance, soluble effector molecules and roaming phagocytic cells, such as macrophages and neutrophils. How important each of these defenses is during fungal clearance depends on the specific fungal pathogen in question and on the stage of infection. In this study the localization and antifungal activity of the lung surfactant protein D (SP-D) was studied in an environment mimicking the lung lining. To this end Calu-3 cells were

Endothelin-1 (ET-1), as it functions as a neuromodulator, has been associated with hypertension in chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) which attribute to enhanced carotid body sensibility to hypoxia. However, the molecular mechanism of ET-1 on carotid body sensibility in CIH is still not clear. Here, effect of ET-1 on carotid body chemosensory stimulation in rats exposed to either CIH or room air (Normoxia) was explored. Furthermore, Phospholipase C (PLC), Protein kinase C (PKC) or p38 MAPK antagonists were adopted to clarify the signalling pathways involved. Results showed that ET-1 induced a

Eggs have a high nutritional value and are an important ingredient in many food products. Worldwide foodborne illnesses, such as salmonellosis linked to the consumption of eggs and raw egg products, are a major public health concern. This review focuses on previous studies that have investigated the procedures for the production of microbiologically safe eggs. Studies exploring pasteurization and decontamination methods were investigated. Gamma irradiation, freeze drying, hot air, hot water, infra-red, atmospheric steam, microwave heating and radiofrequency heating are all different decontamin

Ocular pathologic angiogenesis is a causative factor for retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. In the present study, we examined the effects of rapamycin and everolimus, inhibitors of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), on retinal pathologic angiogenesis in mice with oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR), an animal model of proliferative ischemic retinopathy. Mice were exposed to 80% oxygen from postnatal day (P) 7 to P10, and were then brought into room air and subcutaneously injected with rapamycin and everolimus. The neovascular tufts, the size

The p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) pathway is involved in the osteoclast differentiation. The aim of the study was to investigate whether SB203580, a p38 MAPK inhibitor, inhibits wear-debris-induced inflammatory osteolysis in mice. Forty-five mice were implanted with calvaria bone from syngeneic littermates; then, titanium (Ti) particles were injected into established air pouches to provoke inflammatory osteolysis. At 14 days after bone/Ti implantation, pouch membranes with intact bone implants underwent histological and molecular analysis. SB203580 had less effect on MMP-9 an

The clinical picture of classical homocystinuria is diverse. This is the first report of an adult homocystinuric patient with non-traumatic spontaneous small bowel perforation. A 47-year old man presented with abdominal rebound tenderness, hypotension and tachycardia, anemia, and elevated markers of inflammation. Other routine laboratory tests were normal. Abdominal x-ray showed no free air. An emergency laparotomy revealed jejunal perforation in the left upper quadrant. Histologic specimen showed full-thickness nonspecific inflammation of the intestinal wall with granulocytic infiltration, he

Using the electromobility shift assay (EMSA) in the rat myoblast system, the activation of transcription factor NF-kappaB by reactive nitrogen species was evaluated. Two distinct patterns of activation were demonstrated. Whereas NO donor, SNAP, activated NF-kappaB in the classical pathway, which led to a transient response, NF-kappaB activation by peroxynitrite donor, SIN-1, was mediated by an alternative pathway, which has been demonstrated in previous works to involve tyrosine nitration of the NF-kappaB inhibitory protein I-kappaB alpha. This led to a constitutive non-transient activation of

A 38-year-old man with atopic dermatitis presented with right chest pain and dyspnea. Previously, he had received 2mg of betamethasone daily, to prevent rejection of the right transplanted cornea, for 24 days. His body temperature was 37.4 degrees C, peripheral leucocyte count measured 12,000/mm3, and C-reactive protein was 6.3 mg/dl. A computed tomogram of the chest revealed infiltration in the right lower lung field, and he was then treated for pneumonia. The second day he fell down one flight of stairs due to a syncopal attack and received a head injury. At this point his vital blood pressu

Vibrio cholerae is a waterborne bacterium native to the aquatic environment. There are over 200 known serogroups yet only two cause cholera pandemics in humans. Direct contact of human sewage with drinking water, sea-born currents and marine transportation, represent modes of dissemination of the bacteria and thus the disease. The simultaneous cholera outbreaks that occur sometimes in distant localities within continental landmasses are puzzling. Here we present evidence that flying, non-biting midges (Diptera; Chironomidae), collected in the air, carry viable non-O1 non-O139 serogroups of V.

Pluchea sagittalis whole plant dichloromethane extract showed inhibitory activity in several inflammatory models: rat hind paw-edema, mice ear edema, and air-pouch rat granuloma. The extract inhibited the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in stimulated human neutrophils. It also showed inhibitory effect on heat shock protein 72 (hsp72) synthesis in stimulated neutrophils, while it had opposite effects on unstimulated cells. The triterpene taraxasteryl acetate was obtained from the dichloromethane extract by bioassay directed isolation, being active

BACKGROUND: Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is an effective adjunct in the treatment of infants with respiratory failure. Although there are clear benefits to this therapy, potential toxicity could result from reactive nitrosylated species.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether iNO therapy is associated with increased serum markers of oxidative stress.
DESIGN/METHOD: Multiple markers were prospectively evaluated in the serum of term infants with severe respiratory failure treated with iNO for 1 to 72 hours. These were compared to those of patients exposed to greater than 80% oxygen for more than 6 hours
