Methanolic extract of Citrullus colocynthis suppresses growth and proliferation of breast cancer cells through regulation of cell cycle.

Breast cancer is a major cause of cancer related deaths in women worldwide. Available treatments pose serious limitations such as systemic toxicity, metastasis, tumor recurrence, off-target effects, and drug resistance. In recent years, phytochemicals such as secondary metabolites due to their effective anticancer potential at very low concentration have gained attention. Aim of the study was to evaluate anticancer potential of Citrullus colocynthis and its possible molecular targets on MCF-7, a human breast cancer cell line. Methanolic extract of leaves was prepared and fractionated by solven

Monitoring DNA adducts in human blood samples using magnetic Fe3O4@graphene oxide as a nano-adsorbent and mass spectrometry.

DNA adducts usually occur at a level of 0.1-1 adducts per 108 unmodified DNA bases, which can cause many adverse health effects if not normally repaired. Using microgram amounts of DNA to detect DNA adducts remains challenging due to the extremely low levels. Commercial solid phase extraction is the most widely used method for extracting DNA adducts from biological samples, but it is time consuming and costly, and the hydrophobic interactions between various alkyl-bonded phases and analytes typically lack selectivity when used to extract DNA adducts. Therefore, an effective method for DNA addu

Influence of a medialized middle turbinate on olfactory function: a prospective randomized double-blind study.

BACKGROUND: Medialization of the middle turbinate (MT) is an effective technique to prevent recurrent rhinosinusitis but could, in theory, reduce olfactory function by interfering the odorants to reach the olfactory mucosae. We performed a prospective randomized double-blind trial under the hypothesis that olfactory functions would be affected by the status of olfactory mucosae, not by MT medialization. METHODS: In randomly selected sides, the unilateral MT was medialized in 80 patients undergoing bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis. The status of the bilateral olfac

Review: Membrane Materials for the Removal of Water from Industrial Solvents by Pervaporation and Vapor Permeation.

Organic solvents are widely used in a variety of industrial sectors. Reclaiming and reusing the solvents may be the most economically and environmentally beneficial option for managing spent solvents. Purifying the solvents to meet reuse specifications can be challenging. For hydrophilic solvents, water must be removed prior to reuse, yet many hydrophilic solvents form hard-to-separate azeotropic mixtures with water. Such mixtures make separation processes energy intensive and cause economic challenges. The membrane processes pervaporation (PV) and vapor permeation (VP) can be less energy inte

Unfolding of IgG domains detected by non-reducing SDS-PAGE.

Monoclonal antibodies are very important in modern therapeutics and constitute a substantial percentage of newly approved drugs. Every therapeutic monoclonal antibody must be analyzed for structural and functional integrity, and all protein heterogeneities need to be identified and quantified. The conformational stabilities of the monoclonal antibodies are also important for antibody storage and handling stabilities. One of the first and simplest of the structural analysis techniques utilized is SDS-PAGE, which can be performed both with and without prior reduction to break disulfide bonds. Th

Antimicrobial potentials of medicinal plant's extract and their derived silver nanoparticles: A focus on honey bee pathogen.

Infectious (or Communicable) diseases are not only the past but also the present problem in developing as well as developed countries. It is caused by various pathogenic microbes like fungi, bacteria, parasites and virus etc. The medicinal plants and nano-silver have been used against the pathogenic microbes. Herbal medicines are generally used for healthcare because they have low price and wealthy source of antimicrobial properties. Like medicinal plants, silver nanoparticles also have emergent applications in biomedical fields due to their immanent therapeutic performance. Here, we also expl

Phase Behavior of Drug-Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Amorphous Solid Dispersions Produced from Various Solvent Systems: Mechanistic Understanding of the Role of Polymer using Experimental and Theoretical Methods.

The vast majority of studies evaluating amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) utilize solvent evaporation techniques as the preparation method. However, the impact of the solvent/cosolvent system properties on the polymer conformation and the phase behavior of the resultant drug/polymer blends is poorly understood. Herein, we investigate the influence of solvent properties on the phase behavior of ASDs containing itraconazole (ITZ) and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) prepared using spin coating from binary/ternary cosolvent systems containing alkyl alcohols, dichloromethane (DCM), and water.

Fluorinated Alcohols' Effects on Lipid Bilayer Properties.

Fluorinated alcohols (fluoroalcohols) have physicochemical properties that make them excellent solvents of peptides, proteins, and other compounds. Like other alcohols, fluoroalcohols also alter membrane protein function and lipid bilayer properties and stability. Thus, the questions arise: how potent are fluoroalcohols as lipid-bilayer-perturbing compounds, could small residual amounts that remain after adding compounds dissolved in fluoroalcohols alter lipid bilayer properties sufficiently to affect membranes and membrane protein function, and do they behave like other alcohols? To address t

Optimization of immunolabeling and clearing techniques for indelibly labeled memory traces.

Recent genetic tools have allowed researchers to visualize and manipulate memory traces (i.e., engrams) in small brain regions. However, the ultimate goal is to visualize memory traces across the entire brain in order to better understand how memories are stored in neural networks and how multiple memories may coexist. Intact tissue clearing and imaging is a new and rapidly growing area of focus that could accomplish this task. Here, we utilized the leading protocols for whole-brain clearing and applied them to the ArcCreERT2 mice, a murine line that allows for the indelible labeling of memory
