Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is a hybrid imaging modality that captures ultrasound signals produced by thermoelastic expansion when pulsed laser light is absorbed by optical absorbers, enabling visualization of biological tissues at greater depths than those of conventional fluorescence imaging. While PAI has been conventionally used for biological, structural, and morphological studies, showing promise for imaging calcium dynamics in cardiac tissue, its practical implementation remains undemonstrated. In this study, we implemented a sectional excitation strategy using a thin, sheet-shaped lase…

Reactions between carbon dioxide (CO2) and silica (SiO2), as well as between carbonates and silicates, are central to understanding carbon b … groups, nor had such a structure been theoretically predicted. Here, we report the synthesis of the calcium silicon double carbonate Ca2Si(CO3)4, obtained by reacting tilleyite, Ca5(Si2O7)(CO3)2, with CO2 in diamond anvil cells at 39.5 GPa and 2600 K. The compound was subsequently temperature- and pressure-quenched, remaining metastable at ambient conditi …

INTRODUCTION: Subclinical atherosclerosis measured by coronary artery calcium (CAC) and osteoporosis often co-exist as indolent 'silent' conditions, remain underdiagnosed and undertreated, and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Bone density can be obtained accurately from non-contrast CAC scans, allowing for 'opportunistic' screening of OP without the need for additional tests or radiation, and thereby enhancing the yield of CAC scans and improving patient care globally.
AREAS COVERED: This review will seek to highlight the significant relationship between osteoporosis a…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Calcium plays a crucial role in cardiac electrophysiology, but the association between calcium supplement and the risk of incident arrhythmia remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between habitual calcium supplement and incident risk of cardiac arrhythmia.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 480,972 participants from the UK Biobank. Habitual calcium supplement was treated as the main exposure. The primary outcome was the incidence of arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF/AFL), ventricular arrhythmia (VA), and bradyarrhythmi…

Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy linked to endothelial dysfunction and electrolyte imbalance. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate serum calcium and magnesium levels in 100 preeclamptic and 100 normotensive pregnant women beyond 28 weeks gestation at a tertiary hospital in Central India. Spectrophotometric analysis showed significantly lower calcium (7.84 ±0.74 mg/dL vs. 9.68 ±0.97 mg/dL; p<0.001) and magnesium levels (1.74 ±0.54 mg/dL vs. 1.88 ±0.76 mg/dL; p=0.040) in preeclamptic women. Adverse outcomes such as preterm birth, cesarean delivery, and NICU admissions wer…

Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is an arthropathy with increasing prevalence in the aging population that is associated with significant musculoskeletal morbidity. Although synovial fluid analysis (SFA) has been considered the gold standard for diagnosis, imaging is gaining an increasing role in the diagnosis and assessment of CPPD disease. Ultrasound (US) has proven to be useful in identifying calcium crystals while simultaneously assessing the surrounding inflammatory and structural damage consequent to calcific tissue deposition. Point-of-care ultrasound has the additional b…

Calcium (Ca2+) and magnesium (Mg2+) are important for bone formation, muscle contraction and mass, and nerve function. Processes regulating Ca2+, Mg2+, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and vitamin D3 are tightly coupled, ensuring proper bone metabolism and intestinal and renal absorption of Mg2+ and Ca2+. To better understand the synergy among these processes, mathematical modeling can be used in conjunction with experimental studies. Although several Ca2+ homeostasis models exist, computational models for studying Mg2+ homeostasis are much more limited. To fill this knowledge gap, we developed a mo…

Cholesterol and calcium play crucial roles as integral structural components and functional signaling entities within the central nervous system. Disruption in cholesterol homeostasis has been linked to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's Disease while alterations in calcium signaling is hypothesized to be a key substrate for neurodegeneration across many disorders. Despite the importance of regulated cholesterol and calcium homeostasis for brain health there has been an absence of research investigating the interdependence of these signaling molecules and how they can tune each other's…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hypothyroidism is the most common disease of the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in regulating tissue growth and metabolism. Additionally, patients with thyroid dysfunction have a higher incidence of caries and periodontal problems. The presence of calcium and phosphate ions seems to be effective in remineralizing teeth and reducing caries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the salivary level of calcium in patients with hypothyroidism.
RESULTS: The results of this study showed that saliva calcium concentration in patients with hypothyroidism is sig…

DFT-Calculations predict that a low-valent complex (BDI)Mg-Ca(BDI) with bulky β-diketiminate (BDI) ligands is thermodynamically stable. It was attempted to isolate such a complex by salt-metathesis between [(DIPePBDI*)Mg-Na+]2 and [(DIPePBDI)CaI]2 (DIPePBDI = HC[C(Me)N-DIPeP]2; DIPePBDI* = HC[C(tBu)N-DIPeP]2; DIPeP = 2,6-CH(Et)2-phenyl). Whereas in alkane solvents no reaction was observed, salt-metathesis in C6H6 led to immediate C-H activation of benzene to give (DIPePBDI*)MgPh and (DIPePBDI)CaH, the latter crystallizing as a THF-solvated dimer [(DIPePBDI)CaH·THF]2. Calculations suggest reduc

Calcium and vitamin D have well-established roles in maintaining calcium balance and bone health. Decades of research in human subjects and animals have revealed that calcium and vitamin D also have effects on many other organs including male reproductive organs. The presence of calcium-sensing receptor, vitamin D receptor, vitamin D activating and inactivating enzymes and calcium channels in the testes, male reproductive tract and human spermatozoa suggests that vitamin D and calcium may modify male reproductive function. Functional animal models have shown that vitamin D deficiency in male r…

Ethylene glycol is a sweet-tasting toxic alcohol contained in a variety of chemical preparations. In patients poisoned with ethylene glycol, diagnosis is often based upon clinical suspicion and nonspecific tests. Hypocalcemia is often present due to calcium oxalate crystals formed by oxalic acid metabolite complexation. This retrospective study involved a review of clinical records of patients with a diagnosis of ethylene glycol poisoning. Results of blood gas samples, lactate, ionized calcium, and serum creatinine were documented and compared between various groups. The ionized calcium concen…

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage. Due to its high prevalence and limited treatment options, OA has become one of the most disabling diseases in developed countries. In recent years, OA has been recognized as a heterogenic disease with various phenotypes. Calcium crystal-related endotypes, which are defined by either a distinct functional or pathobiological mechanism, are present in approximately 60% of all OA patients. Two different calcium crystals can accumulate in the joint and thereby calcify the cartilage …
