OBJECTIVE: To clarify the muscle fibre types in the striated urethral sphincter and the pattern of distribution of this muscle in the prostatic capsule.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three prostate glands obtained at radical prostatectomy were studied using a whole-organ technique. We analyzed the characteristic features and intraoperative behavior of pre-existing posterior capsule breaks in 12 cases of traumatic cataract caused by perforating ocular trauma. The interval between the occurrence of trauma and cataract surgery ranged from three days to one year. A retroperitoneal myxoid liposarcoma of the renal capsule must be differentiated from renal cell carcinomas, angiomyolipomas, fibrogenous lipomas, fibrolipomas and mixed tumours containing fat tissue. Myxoid liposarcomas can lead to intracaval tumour thromboses, which is often the case with renal cell carcinomas and revealed clinical with Budd-Chiari syndrome. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging give additional information in the diagnosis of intracaval tumour thromboses and show the exact expansion of the topographic-anatomical structure.

A single injection of estradiol valerate (EV) produces a polycystic ovarian (PCO) condition in the rat. The development of the PCO condition coincides with alterations in the endogenous plasma gonadotropin patterns, suggesting that PCO may be a response to abnormal gonadotropin stimulation. In acetabular fractures, the size of a significant posterior wall fragment remains undefined as it affects joint stability. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate fragment size and hip stability in cadaveric specimens after serial osteotomies. Also, the role of the posterior capsule, in the various osteotomies, was evaluated for changes in hip stability. We used 10 cadaver knees to estimate the safe pressure during arthroscopy by measuring the volumes and pressures of irrigation fluid at different flexion angles. Maximum volumes could be contained at 35 degrees of flexion. Pressures of 200 to 450 mmHg were measured, and all the knees ruptured by extension or flexion after they were filled to 100 mmHg at 35 degrees of flexion. Over six months 10 biochemically and physiologically atypical strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated from eye swabs. Conventional methodology showed that these strains possessed characteristics of both S pneumoniae and other alpha haemolytic streptococci. The use of sodium dodecyl sulphate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) enabled us to characterise these strains as S pneumoniae. Loss of the capsule seemed to be associated with atypical biochemical properties.

Following shoulder arthrography to establish the diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis, we injected steroids via the in situ arthrogram needle. Subsequent intraarticular steroids, if needed, were given at the outpatient clinic using landmarks established at the time of arthrography. Out of 18 patients treated, function sufficient to permit resumption of usual work and self-care activities returned to 16. The problem of otosclerotic inner ear damage is considered on the basis of morphological findings. It is pointed out that the disease of the otic capsule certainly also affects the underlying sense organ. This arises through disturbance of the perilymphatic electrolytes, venous stasis and thus changes in the circulation, disturbed regulation of endolymph and, more rarely, the direct effect of the focus on the auditory nerve or calcification of the mobile membranes.
