Estimation method for karst carbon sinks on the basis of a concentration prediction model.

Karstification can reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere/soil. Accurate estimation of karst carbon sinks is crucial for the study of global climate change. In this study, the Lijiang River Basin was taken as the research area. On the basis of the measured dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration data from 14 consecutive months, the relationships of DIC and DOC to elevation, slope, aspect, rainfall, and temperature were established. Among six regression algorithms, the random forest (RF), boosted regression tree (BRT) and BP neural network (BP)

Climate Change and the Risk of Malaria Transmission in Iran.

Climate change is an important factor affecting the dynamics of the vectors population and, hence, the risk of vector-borne diseases. This study aimed to predict the environmental suitability for malaria vectors in Iran under climate change scenarios in 2030s and 2050s. Literature search was performed to find documents on the spatial distribution of Anopheles stephensi Liston, 1901, Anopheles culicifacies s.l. Giles, 1901, Anopheles fluviatilis s.l. James, 1902, Anopheles superpictus s.l. Grassi, 1899, Anopheles dthali Patton, 1905, Anopheles maculipennis s.l. Meigen, 1818, and Anopheles sacha

The association between dengue incidences and provincial-level weather variables in Thailand from 2001 to 2014.

Dengue and dengue hemorrhagic pose significant burdens in many tropical countries. Dengue incidences have perpetually increased, leading to an annual (uncertain) peak. Dengue cases cause an enormous public health problem in Thailand because there is no anti-viral drug against the dengue virus. Searching for means to reduce the dengue incidences is a challenging and appropriate strategy for primary prevention in a dengue outbreak. This study constructs the best predictive model from past statistical dengue incidences at the provincial level and studies the relationships among dengue incidences

Estuarine crocodiles in a tropical coastal floodplain obtain nutrition from terrestrial prey.

The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is one of the largest and most widespread crocodilians in the world. Although considered an apex species, the role of the estuarine crocodile in aquatic foodwebs is poorly understood; we know what crocodiles ingest, but not what nourishes them. In this study, we used a combination of stable isotope measurements (δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) and direct feeding observations to identify the source of nutrition of estuarine crocodiles in Kakadu National Park, Northern Australia. Our results show that most crocodiles sampled (size 850 - 4200mm, with 76% of them

The oxidizing capacity of the earth's atmosphere: probable past and future changes.

The principal oxidants in the lower atmosphere are ozone (O3) and two by-products of O3 photodissociation, the hydroxyl radical (OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A number of critical atmospheric chemical problems depend on the earth's "oxidizing capacity," which is essentially the global burden of these oxidants. There is limited direct evidence for changes in the earth's oxidizing capacity since recent preindustrial times when, because of industrial and population growth, increasing amounts of O3 precursor trace gases (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons) have been released in

Optimizing dryland ecological restoration: Unveiling the lagged and nonlinear threshold effects on carbon-water compound use efficiency.

Ecological restoration regulates carbon water processes in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, yet its lagged and threshold effects remain unclear. Using multi-source remote sensing data from 2000 to 2022, we identified forest restoration regions, shrubland-grassland restoration regions, and gradual vegetation restoration regions (VRRs) in the Ningxia-Inner Mongolia Reach of the Yellow River and quantified their lagged effects on carbon use efficiency (CUE), water use efficiency (WUE), and carbon-water compound use efficiency (COM) using distributed lag nonlinear models. VRRs dominated restoration,

Contrasting plastic and genetic responses of leaf unfolding and senescence to temperature in Quercus petraea.

Understanding the relative roles of phenotypic plasticity and genetic differentiation in shaping plant phenological responses is essential for predicting forest tree responses to climate warming. Although spring and autumn phenophases respond sensitively to rising temperatures, the underlying regulatory mechanisms may differ substantially, particularly across environmental gradients. We investigated intra-specific phenological variation in Quercus petraea across the French Pyrenees using a multi-environment experimental framework. This approach integrated 15 years of in situ phenological monit

Persons Experiencing Homelessness during Extreme Temperatures: Lessons for Promoting Socially Inclusive Adaptive Capacity.

Climate change and increasing extreme temperatures present unique challenges to persons experiencing homelessness (PEH), including heightened physical and psychological harm. While green and urban infrastructure has emerged as one possible mitigation strategy, homeless populations are rarely included in municipal disaster planning or infrastructure research. This study used in-depth interviews with PEH (N = 42) during the summers of 2022 and 2023. Questions were designed around phenomenological methods to explore the individuals' firsthand descriptions of the lived experience of coping during

Niche and Range Shifts of Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus Suggest That the Latecomer Shows a Greater Invasiveness.

The yellow fever (Aedes aegypti) and Asian tiger (Ae. albopictus) mosquitos are major vectors of global mosquito-borne pathogens. However, their niche and range shifts, the underlying mechanisms, and related relative invasion rates remain scarcely known. We examined the niche and range shifts between the native and invasive Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus populations through dynamic niche and range models and the largest occurrence record datasets to date. We detected substantial niche and range expansions in both species, probably because the introduced populations have more opportunities to a

Development and Validation of an Eating-Related Eco-Concern Questionnaire.

Eco-concern, the distress experienced relating to climate change, is associated with mental health, yet no study has examined disordered eating related to eco-concern. This study developed and validated a 10-item scale assessing Eating-Related Eco-Concern (EREC). Participants (n = 224) completed the EREC, Climate Change Worry Scale (CCWS), and Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). Construct validity, convergent validity, and internal consistency were evaluated. Sex differences in EREC were evaluated using t-tests. Associations among the EREC, CCWS, and EDE-Q were evaluated using l

Linking chilling with forcing: ontogenetic competence in process-based tree phenology models.

Process-based models are widely used for predicting the timing of spring phenological events, such as vegetative bud burst or flowering, in extratropical trees. These models address both the effects of low (chilling) temperatures on rest break (endodormancy release) and those of high (forcing) temperatures on the microscopic ontogenetic development inside the buds which leads to the visible bud burst. In this Methods paper we discuss the use of the theoretical quantity ontogenetic competence, Co, in linking chilling with forcing in such process-based models. In the first part of the study, wit

The development of linear regression models using environmental variables to explain the spatial distribution of Fasciola hepatica infection in dairy herds in England and Wales.

Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica is a major cause of economic loss to the agricultural community worldwide as a result of morbidity and mortality in livestock. Spatial models developed with the aid of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used to develop risk maps for fasciolosis for use in the formulation of disease control programmes. Here we investigate the spatial epidemiology of F. hepatica in dairy herds in England and Wales and develop linear regression models to explain observed patterns of exposure at a small spatial unit, the postcode area. Exposure data used for the ana

Biodiversity Insurance of Forest Productivity Has Strengthened Under Recent Climate Change.

Many studies show that tree diversity promotes forest productivity, and few recent ones suggest that this diversity effect may strengthen under climate warming. Yet this pattern has rarely been tested with observations. Here, we investigated how the species mixture affects forest productivity in response to increasing aridity, relying on 25,838 French forest surveys between 2005 and 2016. We showed that 79.8% of the variation in forest productivity was explained by interactions among tree species richness, baseline and temporal changes in water supply and stand density. Although forest product

Extremozymes for food fermentation: Integrating AI, metagenomics, and protein engineering.

Climate change-induced fluctuations in temperature, pH, salinity, and water activity are increasingly compromising microbial metabolism and fermentation efficiency, exposing the limitations of conventional mesophilic enzymes in maintaining process stability and product consistency. Extremozymes, derived from extremophilic microorganisms, exhibit exceptional structural stability and catalytic activity under harsh physicochemical conditions, making them promising biocatalysts for climate-resilient food fermentation. Although considerable progress has been achieved in extremozyme discovery and en

CKDu and Heat Stress Nephropathy Across Eras: Regional Heterogeneity, Occupational Evidence, and Prevention in a Warming World.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease of uncertain etiology (CKDu), increasingly framed as heat stress nephropathy (HSN) in endemic settings, has evolved from a regional enigma into a climate-health concern. Affecting young workers outside the diabetes-hypertension axis, it shows how heat, labor, dehydration, and social vulnerability converge on the kidney. CKDu/HSN is best approached as heterogeneous kidney disease phenotypes: occupational heat stress is strongly supported in Mesoamerica and selected populations, whereas co-exposures, water insecurity, vulnerability, and genetic or developmental

Reliability generalization meta-analysis of the Climate Change Worry Scale.

Climate change worry is an increasingly critical issue in eco-psychology literature. A commonly used instrument for measuring this construct is the Climate Change Worry Scale (CCWS), developed by Stewart. This Likert-type scale assesses individuals' climate change worry through 10 items clustered under a single factor. It has been adapted for multiple cultures and utilized in numerous studies conducted across various countries. Nevertheless, no study has synthesized the reliability values obtained from individual studies for the scale. The purpose of the current meta-analysis was to perform a

Adopting electric school buses in the United States: Health and climate benefits.

Electric school buses have been proposed as an alternative to reduce the health and climate impacts of the current U.S. school bus fleet, of which a substantial share are highly polluting old diesel vehicles. However, the climate and health benefits of electric school buses are not well known. As they are substantially more costly than diesel buses, assessing their benefits is needed to inform policy decisions. We assess the health benefits of electric school buses in the United States from reduced adult mortality and childhood asthma onset risks due to exposure to ambient fine particulate mat
