Etiology and outcome of 155 patients with midfoot fractures between 1972 and 1997 were analyzed to create a basis for treatment optimization. Cause of injuries were traffic accidents (72.2%), falls (11.6%), blunt injuries (7.7%) and others (5.8%). Isolated midfoot fractures (I) were found in 55 (35.5%) cases, Lisfranc fracture dislocations (L) in 49 (31.2%), Chopart-Lisfranc fracture dislocations (CL) in 26 (16.8%) and Chopart fracture dislocations (C) in 25 (16%). One hundred and forty eight (95%) of the midfoot fractures were treated operatively; 30 with closed reduction, 115 with open reduc

Background Radial neck fractures represent 20 to 30% of elbow fractures in children. Incorrect treatment can lead to significant permanent functional impairment. Posttraumatic avascular necrosis may cause a deformity of the radial head and neck. Deformation of the radial head and neck can be more severe after open rather than closed reduction or orthopedic treatment without reduction. The aim of our study was to analyze the influence of immobilization time on functional outcome. Patients and Methods Retrospective, descriptive study of all children who had been treated for a radial neck fractur

A 60-year-old patient suffered an ankle distortion resulting in a comminuted fracture of the fifth metatarsal. On the same day the accident occurred the patient presented to an emergency department and immediate operative treatment of the fracture was performed by intramedullary Kirschner wires with closed reduction and internal fixation. The aftercare was carried out on an outpatient basis by a registered orthopedist in accordance with the surgeon's instructions. In the radiological control 14 days after surgery a dislocation of the fracture was detected and 1 week later a rectification opera

This study was conducted to explore epidemiologic features of traumatic elbow dislocation with associated fractures in pediatric population following appropriate treatment options.Incidence of elbow dislocation with associated fractures was analyzed in 67 children using elbow radiographs. Treatment for the displaced elbow joint was performed by closed reduction and proper immobilization. Surgical intervention was applied to restore the correct alignment of the fracture. Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) was used to measure elbow joint function.Incidence of pure dislocation was observed in 7

Two cases of complex fracture dislocation of the calcaneus having an unusual pattern of injury are described. The cases exhibit the following special characteristics: (1) fracture dislocation of the calcaneus where the primary fracture line separates the calcaneus into an anteromedial fragment that maintains its normal relationship to the talus and a posterolateral fragment that is dislocated from the subtalar joint. This posterolateral fragment moves laterally and lies adjacent to the fibula; (2) a secondary fracture line separating the lateral portion of the posterior facet from the tuberosi

BACKGROUND: The nasal bone, being the most protruding bone in the center of the facial bones, is particularly susceptible to damage. Nasal bone fractures can often result in secondary deformation and dysfunction of the nose, including septal fractures. Studies on functional or intra-nasal complications have been rarely reported after nasal bone fracture reduction.
AIM: To evaluate the severity of nasal obstruction and its improvement following nasal bone fracture reduction using inferior turbinoplasty.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of data from 50 patients with symptomatic nas

AIM: Re-manipulation of paediatric forearm fractures under general anaesthetic may be required following inadequate closed reduction under conscious sedation. Manipulation under general anaesthetic carries significant inherent risks and is preferably avoided. We assessed one institution's experience with paediatric forearm fracture reduction and investigate the incidence of re-manipulation under general anaesthetic of fractures initially managed under conscious sedation without fluoroscopy.
METHOD: All paediatric forearm fractures presenting to the children's emergency department of our natio

Immediate closed interlocking intramedullary (IM) nailing of femoral shaft fractures in polytraumatized patients using the fracture table may be difficult due to concomitant adjacent injury. We report on the technique of using the AO-femoral distractor for femoral IM nailing and our experience with 56 consecutive cases of IM nailing of the femur. The AO distractor is an alternative to the traction table. Unlike the latter, it does not rely on intact adjacent structures to distract the main fragments. Schanz screws are placed into the femur condyle and into the lesser trochanter. The fracture i

Dislocation of the elbow along with shaft fractures of both bones of the ipsilateral forearm is a rare injury though elbow dislocation or fracture of the forearm bones may occur separately. Such injuries need a concentric reduction of the dislocation and an anatomical fixation of forearm bones for optimal functional outcomes. We report a case of elbow dislocation with fracture of the lateral condyle of the humerus along with fractures of shafts of the radius and ulna in a 44-year-old female. Closed reduction of the elbow and operative stabilization of all fractures were done with good clinical

OBJECTIVE: To study the result of less invasive fixation in treating comminuted fracture of distal tibia.
METHODS: From 2002 to 2008, 48 patients with comminuted fracture of distal tibia were treated with surgery. The closed reduction and less invasive fixation were done to stable broken fibula, and the reduction by Kirschner wire to pick was used for relatively larger debris of tibia. The Kirschner wire or screw were used to fix fracture after the restore of the ankle cavity position and the alignment of the tibia. Partial weight loading and functional exercise of ankle joint were done at 6t

Mandibular fractures in children present the surgeon with a unique set of considerations. Tooth buds within the body and ramus of the mandible restrict the type of surgical intervention that may be used. In addition, the fate of nonerupted dentition in the direct line of the fracture remains unclear. Between July 1985 and June 1990, 30 patients in deciduous or mixed dentition presented with a total of 45 mandibular fractures. Of these 45 fractures, 33% (n = 15) involved 16 nonerupted teeth. Age at the time of fracture was 6.0 +/- 2.3 years (mean +/- SD). Thirty-three percent of patients were t

This paper discusses some of the problems encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of 371 ankle fractures treated at the University of Kansas Medical Center over a 14-year period, 1965-1979. Seven of these injuries required major reconstructive procedures after failure of initial treatment and 11 fractures required eventual ankle arthrodesis. The causes of failures of the initial treatment of these 18 cases are discussed. The extent of involvement of the articular surface of the tibia as seen on the original post-injury roentgenogram correlated closely with the extent of subsequent ankle art

The results of operative treatment of 21 patients with intraarticular fractures of the thumb metacarpal bone are presented. In 14 patients closed reduction was performed followed by percutaneous fixation with one or two K-wires through the metacarpal shaft to the trapezium. In five delayed cases, in which closed reduction was unsuccessful, open reduction and K-wire pinning was performed. After operation the hand and wrist were immobilized for four weeks. In two patients with Rolando-type fractures, an external fixator was used after closed reduction. Patients were followed-up for six months to

Griscelli syndrome (GS) is an autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by partial albinism of the skin and hair shaft. Prompt and early diagnosis is a crucial step for the follow up and management of GS, which would otherwise dramatically decrease the life expectancy of the patients. This case report presents the clinical course of a femoral fracture treated with closed reduction and pelvic-pedal cast, and progression of acute phase reaction during the follow up period.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to describe the management options available for the treatment of the distal radius fracture as well as potential associated complications.
CONCLUSION: There are a wide variety of currently accepted and used treatment options for fractures of the distal radius, ranging from closed reduction with casting to various forms of invasive surgical management. The radiologist must be familiar with these various forms of management to recognize complications when present on follow-up radiographs.

Superior dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint occurred in a 34-year-old woman who sustained a Grade 3B open left tibial fracture. An external fixator was applied to the tibia, and the tibiofibular joint was treated by closed reduction. Two bone graftings were performed, and the patient ultimately required a fibular osteotomy to allow tibial impaction. At 10 months posttrauma, the patient is fully weight-bearing and has no pain either at the tibia or the tibiofibular joint.

Numerous techniques have been reported for the reduction of zygomatic arch fractures. In this article, we aimed to describe a technique we named as "roller coaster maneuver via lateral orbital approach" to closed reduction of the isolated-type zygomatic arch fractures. Surgical outcomes of 14 patients treated with this method were outlined.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis and posttraumatic arthritis are common after talar neck fracture. We hypothesized that delay of definitive fixation would not increase the rate of osteonecrosis, but that the amount of initial fracture displacement, including subtalar and/or tibiotalar dislocations, would be predictive. We investigated the possibility of dividing the Hawkins type-II classification into subluxated (type-IIA) and dislocated (type-IIB) subtalar joint subtypes.
METHODS: The cases of eighty patients with eighty-one talar neck and/or body fractures who had a mean age of 36.7 years were rev

Mandibular condylar fractures can lead to facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and temporomandibular joint instability. To minimize the risk of these issues, endoscopic-assisted reduction techniques were developed. Nevertheless, the confined working space inherent in endoscopic procedures poses challenges, especially in cases with unstable fracture sites, movable plates, and screws. To solve this dilemma, we developed a novel surgical technique using long plate for condylar fracture fixation. "Long Plate Technique" involves a long plate being stabilized via the submandibular incision site, with scr
