Cognitive problems related to vertebrobasilar circulation.

Neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by decreased regional cerebral blood flow. Supporting this concept, both cognitive training exercises and physical activity promote blood flow increase and correlate with healthy cognitive aging. The terminal branches of the posterior circulation supply blood to areas of the brain, such as the thalamus, hippocampus, occipital lobe, and cerebellum, involved with important intellectual functions, particularly recent memory, visual-spatial functioning, and visuomotor adaptations. Amnesia and visual agnosia may be a complication of not only posterior c…

Mindfulness meditation-related pain relief: evidence for unique brain mechanisms in the regulation of pain.

The cognitive modulation of pain is influenced by a number of factors ranging from attention, beliefs, conditioning, expectations, mood, and the regulation of emotional responses to noxious sensory events. Recently, mindfulness meditation has been found attenuate pain through some of these mechanisms including enhanced cognitive and emotional control, as well as altering the contextual evaluation of sensory events. This review discusses the brain mechanisms involved in mindfulness meditation-related pain relief across different meditative techniques, expertise and training levels, experimental

Hyperacute cognitive stroke syndromes.

Cognitive syndromes are common clinical manifestations of hyperacute stroke and may be the single or dominant presenting features. They are related to acute dysfunction of complex integrated distributed functional networks serving different cognitive domains. The most common cortical syndromes include nonfluent or fluent aphasia, neglect, collor agnosia, pure alexia and Balint's syndrome. Disturbances of declarative memory are common following posterior cerebral artery and thalamic strokes. Abulia can follow thalamic, caudate and capsular lesions. Intraventricular and subarachnoid haemorrhages

A contemporary examination of the effect of driver training for reducing crash risk in novice adolescent drivers: protocol for the DRIVER study, a random assignment trial.

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle crashes and resultant fatalities remain disproportionately high among young drivers, with crash risk peaking immediately after licensure. Although graduated driver licensing laws (GDL) for young novice drivers have reduced such fatalities, driver error remains a leading cause; thus, prevention efforts that target improving skills in novice teen drivers before licensure are a strong candidate for reducing crash risk early in licensure. States with more comprehensive driver licensing laws that include mandated driver training before licensure in addition to GDL show low

Biofeedback-Assisted Resilience Training for Traumatic and Operational Stress: Preliminary Analysis of a Self-Delivered Digital Health Methodology.

BACKGROUND: Psychological resilience is critical to minimize the health effects of traumatic events. Trauma may induce a chronic state of hyperarousal, resulting in problems such as anxiety, insomnia, or posttraumatic stress disorder. Mind-body practices, such as relaxation breathing and mindfulness meditation, help to reduce arousal and may reduce the likelihood of such psychological distress. To better understand resilience-building practices, we are conducting the Biofeedback-Assisted Resilience Training (BART) study to evaluate whether the practice of slow, paced breathing with or without

Enhanced reading by training with imposed time constraint in typical and dyslexic adults.

Poor reading skills of developmental dyslexics persist into adulthood with standard remediation protocols having little effect. Nevertheless, reading improves if readers are induced to read faster. Here we show that this improvement can be enhanced by training. Training follows a multi-session procedure adapted to silent sentence reading, with individually set, increasingly more demanding, time constraints (letter-by-letter masking). In both typical and dyslexic adult readers, reading times are shortened and comprehension improves. After training, the dyslexic readers' performance is similar t

[Development and evaluation of a motor coordination training for children in special-needs classes].

Previous research showed that children in classes with reduced curriculum ("ready for school classes") perform systematically poorer in short-term memory, attention control and motor coordination skills than children in regular classes. Based on these results, a training to improve children's planning, sequencing, and executive control of motor actions was developed. It includes body coordination, (bi-) manual coordination, rhythm and balance. The tasks stress flexibility of action, interference control and focused attention. Training sessions proceed from easy to complex, from action accuracy

Representations and decodability of diverse cognitive functions are preserved across the human cortex, cerebellum, and subcortex.

Which part of the brain contributes to our complex cognitive processes? Studies have revealed contributions of the cerebellum and subcortex to higher-order cognitive functions; however, it has been unclear whether such functional representations are preserved across the cortex, cerebellum, and subcortex. In this study, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging data with 103 cognitive tasks and construct three voxel-wise encoding and decoding models independently using cortical, cerebellar, and subcortical voxels. Representational similarity analysis reveals that the structure of task repres

Team cognition in remote maritime operations: a scoping review and cross-domain theoretical synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Remote maritime operations increasingly depend on complex, distributed socio-technical systems in which safe and effective performance relies on team cognition rather than on individual decision-making alone. Despite its importance, the conceptualisation and measurement of team cognition in this domain remain fragmented and underdeveloped. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Searches of SCOPUS, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost yielded 162 records, of whic

Integrating Non-technical Skills in Endoscopy into Gastroenterology Training: A National Framework for Saudi Arabia.

The practice of gastroenterology has evolved rapidly over the past two decades, driven by advances in endoscopic technology, expanding therapeutic indications, and increasing expectations of patient safety and quality of care. While technical competence in endoscopy remains a cornerstone of gastroenterology training, there is growing recognition that non-technical skills in endoscopy (NTSE) are also critical determinants of procedural success and patient outcomes. NTSE encompasses cognitive, interpersonal, and behavioral competencies, including communication, situational awareness, decision-ma

Clicker Training as an Applied Refinement Measure in Chickens.

When using chickens in animal studies, the handling of these animals for sample collection or general examinations is considered stressful due to their prey nature. For the study presented here, plasma and salivary corticosterone as well as New Area Test behavior and fecal output were used to evaluate whether it is possible to influence this stress perception using a three-week clicker training program. The results indicate that clicker training seems to be a suitable refinement measure in the sense of cognitive enrichment for the husbandry of this species. However, since it was also shown tha

Cognitive Decline as a Result of Incarceration and the Effects of a CBT/MT Intervention: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

This study primarily tests whether incarceration negatively affects cognitive functioning; namely emotion regulation, cognitive control, and emotion recognition. As a secondary interest, we test protective effects of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Mindfulness Training (CBT/MT) intervention. Dormitories containing 197 incarcerated males aged 16-18 were randomly assigned to either a CBT/MT program or an active control condition. A cognitive task was administered pre-treatment and again four months later, upon treatment completion. Performance on all outcome variables was significantly worse at f

Prevalence and symptoms of delirium superimposed on dementia.

Delirium is a frequent syndrome among patients who are elderly. People who are older with cognitive impairment who are institutionalized are at increased risk of developing delirium when hospitalized. In addition, their prior cognitive impairment makes detecting their delirium a challenge. This study goal was to describe the effect of severity of prior cognitive impairment on delirium prevalence and symptom presentation among patients who were older and were newly admitted to an acute care hospital. A total of 104 were included in this descriptive study and screened for delirium. The results s

Functional rating scales and psychometric assessment in Alzheimer's disease: applications in pharmacological trials.

New findings on cognitive aging show that decline in brain functions is not part of a general decline of functioning in old age. We know now that with increasing age there is a differentiation of cognitive functions into two independent dimensions (fluid and crystallized functions). This two-dimensional model allows a more precise description of the cognitive aging process and of pathological changes. While crystallized cognitive abilities can be improved by training till late in life, fluid cognitive functions are subject to a progressive decrease starting as early as age 30, becoming most ev

A harmonized framework for studying exceptional cognitive aging in Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: Biological, genetic, and sociocultural factors underlying cognitive resilience and resistance to pathology remain unexplored in Latin America. The Life-Course Epidemiology of Aging, Resilience, and Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's Disease (LEARN-AD) study and Latin American SuperAgers Study (LASAS) establish the first harmonized frameworks to characterize resilience and exceptional cognitive aging phenotypes in the region. METHODS: The shared protocol integrates cognitive, neurological, psychosocial, and genetic data. SuperAgers are deeply phenotyped, while successful cognitive

Are realistic details important for learning with visualizations or can depth cues provide sufficient guidance?

The optimal choice of the level of realism in instructional visualizations is a difficult task. Previous studies suggest that realism can overwhelm learners, but a growing body of research demonstrates that realistic details can enhance learning. In the first experiment (n = 107), it was assessed whether learning using realistic visualizations can be distracting and therefore particularly benefits from pre-training. Participants learned the anatomy of the parotid gland using labeled visualizations. While pre-training did not have an effect, a more realistic visualization enhanced learning comp
