Chemical analysis of brain tumour cyst contents has invalidated the concept of cyst formation being the result of tumour necrosis, and a common mechanism of vasogenic brain oedema and cyst formation, namely blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, has been suggested. To analyse a possible relationship between the occurrence of vasogenic oedema and the presence of cysts, we performed a volumetric analysis on the MRI and CT studies of 60 patients with primary or metastatic brain tumours. We compared four groups of tumours: 30 gliomas, of which 15 were cystic and 15 not and 30 metastatic brain tumou

We reported a rare case of an endodermal cyst on the posterior fossa. The patient was a 51-year-old woman with tinnitus, ear blockage and a mild swallowing disturbance. MR images revealed a cystic mass 5 cm in diameter in front of the pontomedullary junction. Gadolinium-enhanced images showed some spotty lesions in the cystic mass. The brain stem was compressed strongly by the mass. The left vertebral artery was involved in the mass. Total removal of the tumor was performed via the transcondylar approach. During the operation the lower cranial nerves, the bilateral vertebral artery and the ver

Pituitary abscess is relatively rare. Only about 80 cases have been reported. Preexisting lesions in pituitary fossa, such as pituitary adenoma, craniopharyngioma and Rathke's cleft cyst, are inclined to be complicated by infection more than the normal pituitary glands are. We reported a case of pituitary abscess caused by infection of Rathke's cleft cyst. A 67-year-old male had general fatigue and loss of appetite 4 months before admission. On admission he was found to have diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, and hypernatremia. These defects were controlled by medication but he gradually b

BACKGROUND: Perineural Tarlov cysts are extrathecal cerebrospinal fluid-filled cavities in the perineural recesses around dorsal spinal nerve roots. They are mostly asymptomatic but may occasionally cause back pain, radiculopathy, neurological deficits, and idiopathic intracranial hypotension.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 40-year-old female presented with a partial left foot drop attributed to a symptomatic L5 Tarlov cyst with an extension anterior to the sacrum. Following a computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous trans-sacral fibrin glue intracystic injection, the cyst was markedly reduced in si

Hydatid disease of the liver is a parasitic infection primarily caused by the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts may remain clinically silent for many years and are often an incidental finding on ultrasonography performed for unrelated reasons. Sudden death due to unrecognized hydatid cysts can occur, and rare case reports of this kind are present in the literature. We present a sudden death due to an intact hydatid cyst in a 13-year-old girl, who had a sudden onset of anaphylactic shock after a blunt abdominal trauma. Sudden death in this case was attributed to anaphylactic shoc

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a rare afferent infectious disease in Japan. This paper reports a case of a hepatic cyst being diagnosed after surgical resection. A 40-year-old Syrian male was admitted for evaluation of a hepatic cyst. Serum antibodies of echinococcosis were negative. Enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a large cystic lesion, 9 cm in diameter, in the left lateral sector of the liver, which had many honeycomb-like septa and calcified lesions. Magnetic resonance imaging of this lesion revealed high intensity in the T2 weighted image. We preoperatively diagnosed th

A 61-year-old man presented with repeated back pain and progressive anesthesia of both lower limbs. MR images and myelography showed an intradural, extramedullary tumor at the Th8-9 level. Surgery revealed a thin membrane containing xanthochromic cerebrospinal fluid behind the spinal cord. Microscopically, the excised lesions contained columnar epithelium with goblet cells. Spinal neurenteric cysts are a rare anomaly, especially solitary cysts located in the thoracic spine. The neurenteric canal transiently develops in the lumbosacral region during the 3rd week of gestation. Thus, it is diffic

The efficacy of albendazole was evaluated in 20 Colombian patients with neurocysticercosis showing neurological symptoms. All had parenchymal non-enhancing cystic images by computerized tomography and a positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for cysticercus antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid. They stayed in hospital for 8 d during treatment with albendazole, 15 mg/kg/d in 2 divided doses, and were then followed for at least 6 months after treatment. The number of cysts was reduced by 50% after 6 months. In 7 (35%) all cysts disappeared, in 7 (35%) the number was reduced, and in the

Steatocystoma simplex, an entity not previously described, to my knowledge, occurred in 16 women and 14 men. Eleven cysts were situated on the face, six on the limbs, and five on the chest. The clinical diagnosis was usually some type of cyst. The lesions contained yellow fluid. Microscopic findings showed a partially collapsed, thin-walled cyst lined by stratified squamous epithelium with a thick, undulating hyaline cuticle and sebaceous glands in or near the wall. When compared with steatocystoma multiplex and dermoid cysts, the differential features of steatocystoma simplex included its sol

Pineal cysts are usually benign, fluid-filled sacs and most pineal cysts are asymptomatic. Sudden death specifically related to pineal cysts is extremely uncommon. A literature review of the pertinent databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, was carried out to review the existing literature describing sudden death in patients with pineal cysts. In the evaluation of 49 articles, it was found that four reports discussed the unexpected death of patients who had pineal cysts. A total of four cases of sudden death and a pineal cyst were reported. There were 75% femal

OBJECTIVE: Perineural cysts, also known as Tarlov cysts, are cerebrospinal fluid-filled growths that develop at the intersection of a dorsal root ganglion and posterior nerve root. They are typically an asymptomatic and incidental finding during routine spine imaging. For symptomatic perineural cysts, there is little evidence on which treatment is most effective or when it is indicated. The aim of this study was to review our experience from a population-based cohort of patients with symptomatic perineural cysts and to propose an algorithm that could be used in the selection of surgical candid

The widespread adoption of multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for evaluation of intraabdominal pathology has resulted to a steady increase in the number of incidentally discovered pancreatic cysts in clinical practice during the last decades. The differential diagnosis of these cysts is broad including pseudocysts, serous cystic neoplasms, mucinous cystic neoplasms, and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms. The MRI has an important role both in the initial characterization of incidentally detected pancreatic cysts and the follow-up of these lesions and h

The case of a 40-year-old woman with a mature cystic teratoma in the lateral ventricle is reported. An unusual mobile sediment of radiopaque material in the cyst was identified as grains of calcium carbonate. It was considered to have precipitated from the cystic fluid under specific chemical conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound-guided cyst aspiration is a potential treatment for acute adnexal torsion that can be performed in the outpatient setting, offering an alternative to emergency laparoscopic surgery. The objective of this study was to describe our initial experience with aspiration of acutely torted adnexal cysts.
METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center study, in which we identified all patients who underwent ultrasound-guided cyst aspiration in our center between February 2008 and September 2023. Indications for the procedure were ultrasound diagnosis of adnexal torsion due to an

Congenital splenic cysts are rare entities, accounting for approximately 10% of non-parasitic splenic cysts, and are often incidentally discovered. Although many remain asymptomatic, larger lesions may present with abdominal discomfort or complications requiring intervention. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with chronic abdominal discomfort and back pain and was found on imaging to have a giant splenic cyst measuring 16 × 14.5 cm, located at the upper pole of the spleen with internal echoes and calcifications. The patient underwent a laparoscopic partial splenectomy, dur

PURPOSE: Increased tumor markers after induction chemotherapy for patients with germ cell tumor usually represent systemic disease and consequently second line chemotherapy is instituted, while retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) is reserved for patients with marker normalization. We report the concentration of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in the fluid of post-chemotherapy cystic masses to evaluate this as a potential source for serum marker elevation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From March 2002 to December 2002, 11 consecutive patients with post-chemoth

Cysts occupying the third ventricle are rare lesions and may appear as an unusual cause of obstructive hydrocephalus. Various types of lesions occur in this location, and they generally have an arachnoidal, endodermal, or neuroepithelial origin. The authors present a case of acute hydrocephalus following minor trauma in a child due to cerebrospinal fluid outflow obstruction by a third ventricular cyst. Definitive diagnosis of this cystic lesion was possible only with contrast ventriculography and not routine computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The investigation, treatment, and p

Cystic lesions in the petrous apex are nearly always either epidermoid cysts, with a soft but solid content, or cholesterol cysts, containing brown fluid. They may be symptomless, produce progressive cranial nerve palsies or, occasionally, reach the CSF pathways thus leading either to meningitis or a CSF leak. Thirteen cases and four unverified cases have been encountered amongst a series of more than 500 cerebellopontine angle tumours. Their clinical features, radiological diagnosis and difficulties of surgical approach are discussed.
