Burden and changes in HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality in Southern Africa Development Community Countries, 1990-2017.

BACKGROUND: The 16 Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries remain the epicentre of the HIV/AIDS epidemic with the largest number of people living with HIV/AIDS. Anti-retroviral treatment (ART) has improved survival and prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, but the disease remains a serious cause of mortality. We conducted a descriptive epidemiological analysis of HIV/AIDS burden for the 16 SADC countries using secondary data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factor (GBD) Study. METHODS: The GBD study is a systematic, scientific effort by

Feasibility of endoscopic discectomy by inter laminar approach at a high volume tertiary public hospital in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment for lumbar disc herniation consists of discectomy performed either open or minimally invasive techniques. Endoscopic discectomy using the tubular retractor is been increasingly used as it gives advantage of smaller incision, less tissue injury and faster recovery. The aim of this study was to check its feasibility and learning curve at a tertiary public sector hospital with a large volume load (more than 50 spine surgeries per month) with treatment provided free of cost. METHODS: Eighty patients underwent endoscopic discectomy using tubular retractor were prospe

Long-tunneled versus short-tunneled external ventricular drainage: Prospective experience from a developing country.

BACKGROUND: External ventricular drains (EVD) are commonly utilized for temporary diversion of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Many neurosurgeons prefer long-tunneled EVDs in their routine practice. However, it is still unclear whether this extended tunneling helps in reducing CSF infection. Keeping this in mind, we decided to compare infection rates in long-tunneled versus short-tunneled EVDs in the setting of a developing country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 60 patients was conducted. Consenting patients who underwent short-tunneled (Group A) or long-tunneled (Group B) EVDs bet

Gastroschisis in a developing country: poor resuscitation is a more significant predictor of mortality than postnasal transfer time.

BACKGROUND: The time from birth to the first paediatric surgical consultation of neonates with gastroschisis is a predictor of mortality in dveloping countries. This is contrary to findings in the developed world. We set out to document this relationship within our population. METHOD: Neonates with gastroschisis who were transferred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital within the study period were included. The association between mortality and demographic, clinical and biochemical variables was assessed. Significant variables after univariate analysis were subjected to multivariates regression.

[Historical Development of the Wool and Colour Plate Tests for Screening for Colour Vision Deficiencies in German Speaking Countries].

Colour vision is a complex visual function that can be affected by congenital and/or acquired disorders. The frequency of congenital colour vision deficiencies has been investigated in rail and navy staff since the 1870s. Various test methods have been developed. Wool tests, flor contrast tests and colour plate tests have been used. A published colour plate test, based on Stilling's pseudo-isochromatic plates in combination with a flor contrast test, has been a common screening method for colour vision testing in German-speaking countries. This test is intended to detect congenital and acquire

Psychopathology and Related Psychosocial Factors in Children with Office Discipline Referrals at School: Evidence from a Developing Country.

Many childhood psychiatric disorders present their first symptoms as challenging behaviors at school. Evidence from cross-national studies enhance the understanding of the biological and cultural variables underlying these behaviours. In this study, we aim to identify the psychopathology among children with office disciplinary referrals and assess psychosocial risk factors related to this situation. Forty-seven students who had received an office discipline referral and eighty-three controls who had never been given an office disciplinary referral participated in this study. The Kiddie Schedul
